Calreticulin is a highly conserved and multifunctional molecular chaperone ubiquitously expressed in humans and animals. Beyond its well-est … lin exhibited preliminary inhibitory activity against Escherichia coli, Salmonella typhimurium, and Pasteurella multocida. Calreticulin was capable of binding to these three bacterial species as well as bacterial lipopolysaccharides (LPS). Notably, in the presence of Ca2+, calreticulin induced bacterial aggregation, indicating a potential mechanism for limiting bacteri …

BACKGROUND: Antimicrobial resistance is one of the most important health challenges in humans and animals. Antibiotic susceptibility determination is used to select the most suitable drug to treat animals according to its success probability following the European legislation in force for these drugs. We have studied the antibiotic susceptibility pattern (ASP) of Actinobacillus pleuropneumoniae (APP) and Pasteurella multocida (PM) isolates, collected during the period 2019-2022 in Spain. ASP was measured by determining minimum inhibitory concentration using standardized laboratory methods and …

Recent studies have shown an increase in antimicrobial-resistant bovine respiratory disease (BRD) pathogens. To investigate the origin of antimicrobial resistance in the respiratory microbiota of beef cattle, three groups (A, B, or C) of 40 calves sourced from different calf-ranches were sampled by deep nasopharyngeal swab (DNS) at the time of first on-ranch vaccination (Time point 1, T1), feedlot entry (Time point 2, T2), and 40 days after feedlot entry (Time point 3, T3; feedlots differed by group). Pasteurella multocida, Mannheimia haemolytica, and Histophilus somni were isolated from DNS s…

Pasteurellosis in the rabbit inoculated with a malignant variant of Shope fibroma virus (SFV-MV) is presented as a model for the study of immunosuppression and immunoprophylaxis in pasteurellosis. The rabbits, before the inoculation, were healthy carriers of Pasteurella multocida. They were intradermally inoculated with SFV-MV, and 3 to 6 days later, a primary tumor appeared at the site of inoculation. By postinoculation day (PID) 7 or 8, the rabbits had snuffles, conjunctivitis, and tumor metastases; death occurred on PID 10 to 14. Rabbits given the nonmalignant Patuxent strain of SFV develop…

The danger of dog bites is often exaggerated. The reason for this is a gram negative bacterium Pasteurella multocida, which causes a serious infection within 12 h. Among 143 dog bites we saw only two of these infections. The bacterial swabs from the mouths of 20 dogs revealed E. coli in 43%, Streptococci in 33%, Proteus in 30%, Staph. epidermidis in 27% and Enterococci in 25%. Since the blood supply of the face is much more superior to that for instance of the legs, infections are rare and primary closure of wounds of dog and human bites is recommended. Additional drainage, hospitalisation and…

Animal bites are an extremely common problem in the United States. Dogs are by far the most common offender, closely followed by cats, humans, and rats. Most injuries are trivial, but can become infected, and fatalities do occur. A wide variety of organisms cause a multitude of clinical problems, but cellulitis and lymphangitis caused by Pasteurella multocida are most common. Human bites, especially of the hand, present major problems in management, and staphylococci or streptococci are frequent pathogens. Penicillin is an effective first-line antibiotic for animal bites, while a penicillinase…

AIMS: Riemerella anatipestifer is a significant pathogen of waterfowl and turkeys. Due to their similar ecology and morphological and cultural characteristics it is important to differentiate R. anatipestifer infections from those caused by Pasteurella multocida. Present study describes a novel PCR assay that is capable of rapid and species-specific identification of R. anatipestifer from bacterial cultures.
METHODS AND RESULTS: An ERIC (enterobacterial repetitive intergenic consensus)-PCR fragment common to all tested isolates was used as a target for primer design. After optimization, the a…

200 SPF pigs were infected by aerosol with Mycoplasma hyopneumoniae and the development of clinical signs, serological and pathological reactions were studied. Mean time to onset of coughing was 13 days. A mean delay of 9 days was observed from onset of coughing until seroconversion against M. hyopneumoniae as measured by ELISA. At an individual level, the sensitivity for this ELISA was estimated to 98-100% and the specificity to 93-100%. Pasteurella multocida was isolated from the majority of the lungs 4 weeks post inoculation with M. hyopneumoniae and the lung lesions in pigs were significan…

We characterized past avian cholera outbreaks in waterbirds at Hayward Marsh, California, US. In 2013, we surveyed populations and determined the presence of disease using several diagnostic methods, including behavioral and physical observations, field necropsy, and bacterial culture. We compiled this information with data from previous outbreaks from 1990-2012 to compare waterbird abundance to various measures of mortality, including percentage of mortality and percentage of difference between abundance and mortality by species. We suggest that Ruddy Duck ( Oxyura jamaicensis ) have consiste

Bovine respiratory disease (BRD) is an important health and economic burden to the cattle industry worldwide. Three bacterial pathogens frequently associated with BRD (Mannheimia haemolytica, Pasteurella multocida, and Histophilus somni) can possess integrative and conjugative elements (ICEs), a diverse group of mobile genetic elements that acquire antimicrobial resistance (AMR) genes (ARGs) and decrease the therapeutic efficacy of antimicrobial drugs. We developed a duplex recombinase polymerase amplification (RPA) assay to detect up to two variants of ICEs in these Pasteurellaceae. Whole gen…

Administration of appropriate antibiotics after a cat bite is essential for the prevention of potentially fatal complications.

The intensification of pig farming has posed significant challenges in managing and preventing sanitary problems, particularly diseases of the respiratory complex. Monitoring at slaughter is an important control tool and cannot be overstated. For this, a selected slaughterhouse in São Paulo State underwent a thorough examination of carcasses on the slau…
