Antimicrobial susceptibility of pathogens isolated from patients with complicated intra-abdominal infections at five medical centers in Taiwan that continuously participated in the Study for Monitoring Antimicrobial Resistance Trends (SMART) from 2006 to 2010.

The Study for Monitoring Antimicrobial Resistance Trends (SMART) is a worldwide surveillance program designed to longitudinally monitor the in vitro activity of antimicrobial agents against pathogens that cause intra-abdominal infections (IAIs). In this study, trends in antimicrobial resistance during the period 2006 to 2010 were analyzed at five tertiary-care hospitals in Taiwan. Enterobacteriaceae accounted for the majority (80.9%) of the 2417 Gram-negative isolates, and the two most common species were Escherichia coli (38.8%) and Klebsiella pneumoniae (23.5%). The rates of susceptibility o

Exploring patient involvement in obstetrics and gynaecology medical education: a scoping review.

BACKGROUND: The benefit of patient involvement in medical education has been widely described. In particular, patient story-telling and sharing of personal experiences has been shown to increase study empathy and connection to patients. Patient involvement in obstetrics and gynaecology requires particular consideration with regard to patient dignity and autonomy. This scoping review aims to explore the context of patient involvement in medical education of this specialty to date, with a view to identifying gaps in the current provision of training and amplifying the patient voice and perspecti

A randomized controlled trial on the effects of decision aids for choosing discharge destinations of older stroke patients.

BACKGROUND: In Japanese medical practice, older stroke survivors are overwhelmed with information regarding their discharge locations, creating more decision-making challenges. A randomized controlled trial evaluated the influence of decision aids (DAs) for matching older stroke patients and their families' values concerning decisional conflict and participation in discharge destination decisions. METHODS: Participants were randomly allocated to intervention and control groups. The intervention spanned two months, from admission to discharge, at which times participants were surveyed. DAs wer

Couples' experiences with expanded carrier screening: evaluation of a university hospital screening offer.

Preconception carrier screening offers couples the possibility to receive information about the risk of having a child with a recessive disorder. Since 2016, an expanded carrier screening (ECS) test for 50 severe autosomal recessive disorders has been available at Amsterdam Medical Center, a Dutch university hospital. This mixed-methods study evaluated the experiences of couples that participated in the carrier screening offer, including high-risk participants, as well as participants with a general population risk. All participants received genetic counselling, and pre- (n = 132) and post-tes

Shared perioperative decision making: a shift in the doctor-patient paradigm.

The high-risk surgical patient only constitutes approximately 4% of the elective non-cardiac surgical population but contributes to the vast majority of in-hospital deaths following surgery. This, in conjunction with a high morbidity rate, can lead to a perioperative pathway fraught with challenges. It is incredibly difficult to anticipate which complications may arise and the risks involved before surgery. It is for this reason that patients need to be engaged in the decision-making processes regarding their perioperative care involved before major surgery. A combination of good medical pract

Menopause: A complex and controversial journey.

Menopause is defined as permanent cessation of menstrual periods, determined retrospectively after a woman has experienced 12 months of amenorrhea without any other obvious cause. Over the years, the discourse surrounding the Climacteric was mainly elicited as a "disease of the castrates", as opposed to the feminist views. There has been a large feminist contribution to both the debate of contraception and menopause in the last few years. Over the years, menopause has been treated in a uniform fashion, as a disease, excluding the different circumstances and lived experiences that patients go t

Health Informatics Can Avoid Committing Symbolic Violence by Recognizing and Supporting Generic Decision-making Competencies.

'Symbolic violence' is committed, however well-intentionally, by the imposition of particular conceptualizations of what information, in what form and quality, is needed in order to make an 'informed choice' and hence - by questionable segue - a high quality decision. The social and cultural forms of relevant cognitive capital possessed by those who fail, because of their low general literacy, professionally-set knowledge tests of functional health literacy, are being ignored. Failing to recognise and exploit a particular form of functional decision literacy, in fact leads to symbolic violence
