Risk factors for unplanned readmissions in paediatric neurosurgery: a systematic review.

OBJECTIVES: Unplanned hospital readmission (UHR) after paediatric neurosurgery is an important indicator of surgical outcomes. As this field deals with complex cases, there is an increased likelihood of potential complications and the subsequent need for readmission. We estimated paediatric neurosurgery UHR rates globally and identified significant factors contributing to 30-day and 90-day UHR rates in children undergoing neurosurgical procedures. DESIGN: A systematic review was conducted following the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses guidelines. DATA SOURCE

The role of frailty risk for fracture-related hospital readmission and mortality after a hip fracture.

BACKGROUND: Frailty risk estimated using hospital administrative data may provide a useful clinical tool to identify older hip fracture patients at-risk of fracture-related readmissions and mortality. This study examined hip fracture hospitalisation temporal trends and explore the role of frailty risk in fracture-related readmission and mortality. METHODS: This retrospective cohort study was conducted using linked hospital admission and mortality data in New South Wales, Australia. Patients aged ≥65 years were admitted after a hip fracture between 2014 and 2021 for temporal trends and those a

Critical care after major surgery: a systematic review of risk factors for unplanned admission.

Critical care admission may be necessary for surgical patients requiring organ support or invasive monitoring in the peri-operative period. Unplanned critical care admission poses a potential risk to patients and pressure on services. Existing guidelines base admission criteria on predicted risk of 30-day mortality; however, this may not provide the best predictor of which patients would benefit from this service, and how unplanned admission might be avoided. A systematic review of MEDLINE, Embase, CINAHL, Web of Science, the Cochrane database and the grey literature identified 44 studies asse

Continuum of care in hospitalized patients with opioid or stimulant use disorder and infectious complications of drug use-substance use/infectious disease integrated clinic compared to treatment as usual to prevent infection-related readmission (CHOICE-STAR): a study protocol for an effectiveness-implementation randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: People who inject drugs (PWID) experience high rates of serious injection-related bacterial and fungal infections (SIRI), including cellulitis, osteomyelitis, and endocarditis. These infections often require prolonged antibiotic treatment and result in frequent rehospitalizations, with over 50% of patients readmitted within 1 year. Few evidence-based interventions exist to optimize continuity of care for addiction, management, and prevention of SIRI following hospitalization. METHODS: CHOICE-STAR is a hybrid type 1 randomized effectiveness-implementation trial, guided by the Explo

Association of Psychosocial Factors and Hospital Complications with Risk for Readmission After Trauma.

BACKGROUND: Unplanned hospital readmissions are associated with morbidity and high cost. Existing literature on readmission after trauma has focused on how injury characteristics are associated with readmission. We aimed to evaluate how psychosocial determinants of health and complications of hospitalization combined with injury characteristics affect risk of readmission after trauma. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We conducted a retrospective cohort study of adult trauma admissions from July 2015 to September 2017 to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle, Washington. We assessed patient, injury, and

Discharge to post-acute care and other predictors of prolonged length of stay during the initial COVID-19 surge: a single site analysis.

BACKGROUND: During the initial surge of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), health-care utilization fluctuated dramatically, straining acute hospital capacity across the USA and potentially contributing to excess mortality. METHODS: This was an observational retrospective study of patients with COVID-19 admitted to a large US urban academic medical center during a 12-week COVID-19 surge in the Spring of 2020. We describe patterns in length of stay (LOS) over time. Our outcome of interest was prolonged LOS (PLOS), which we defined as 7 or more days. We performed univariate analyses of patient
