Effectiveness and safety profile of anakinra in a HLA-B27 positive patient with multiple sclerosis-associated uveitis.

Multiple sclerosis (MS) is a chronic demyelinating disorder of central nervous system (CNS) leading to neurological disability. A wide variety of ophthalmic and neuro-ophthalmic manifestations have been associated with MS. Although this link is well recognized, controversial is still the risk of developing MS in patients with ophthalmic manifestations. Intermediate uveitis followed by panuveitis are the most common manifestations among the ophthalmic involvement in MS. Timely management of uveitis, is a crucial step to prevent irreversible visual impairment. A multidisciplinary team including

Sustained Impairment of Lurasidone Clearance After Discontinuation of Posaconazole: Impact of Obesity, and Implications for Patient Safety.

PURPOSE/BACKGROUND: The antipsychotic agent lurasidone (Latuda®) is metabolized by Cytochrome P450-3A (CYP3A) enzymes. Coadministration with strong CYP3A inhibitors (such as ketoconazole, posaconazole, and ritonavir) is contraindicated due to the risk of sedation and movement disorders from high levels of lurasidone. This study evaluated the time-course of recovery from the posaconazole drug interaction, and the effect of obesity on the recovery process. METHODS/PROCEDURES: Healthy normal-weight volunteers (n = 11, mean body mass index, BMI, = 23.1 kg/m) and otherwise healthy obese subjects (

Efficacy and safety of apixaban in a patient with systemic venous thromboembolism associated with hereditary antithrombin deficiency.

A 40-year-old man with progressively worsening dyspnea was admitted to our hospital. On physical examination, pulse oximetry results demonstrated 80% oxygen saturation in room air. The lungs sounded clear, and both extremities appeared normal, without pitting edema. His echocardiography revealed a pressure overload in the right ventricle. Suspecting the presence of pulmonary thromboembolism, we performed an enhanced computed tomography (CT). CT results revealed systemic venous thromboembolism (VTE) involving the superior mesenteric vein, inferior vena cava (IVC), right common iliac vein and pu

Improving healthcare empowerment through breast cancer patient navigation: a mixed methods evaluation in a safety-net setting.

BACKGROUND: Breast cancer mortality rates in the U.S. remain relatively high, particularly among ethnic minorities and low-income populations. Unequal access to quality care, lower follow up rates, and poor treatment adherence contribute to rising disparities among these groups. Healthcare empowerment (HCE) is theorized to improve patient outcomes through collaboration with providers and improving understanding of and compliance with treatment. Patient navigation is a health care organizational intervention that essentially improves healthcare empowerment by providing informational, emotional,

Safety and efficacy of drug-eluting stents in women: a patient-level pooled analysis of randomised trials.

BACKGROUND: The safety and efficacy of drug-eluting stents (DES) in the treatment of coronary artery disease have been assessed in several randomised trials. However, none of these trials were powered to assess the safety and efficacy of DES in women because only a small proportion of recruited participants were women. We therefore investigated the safety and efficacy of DES in female patients during long-term follow-up. METHODS: We pooled patient-level data for female participants from 26 randomised trials of DES and analysed outcomes according to stent type (bare-metal stents, early-generat

Escitalopram for the management of major depressive disorder: a review of its efficacy, safety, and patient acceptability.

Escitalopram (escitalopram oxalate; Cipralex(®), Lexapro(®)) is a selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor (SSRI) used for the treatment of major depressive disorder (MDD) and anxiety disorder. This drug exerts a highly selective, potent, and dose-dependent inhibitory effect on the human serotonin transport. By inhibiting the reuptake of serotonin into presynaptic nerve endings, this drug enhances the activity of serotonin in the central nervous system. Escitalopram also has allosteric activity. Moreover, the possibility of interacting with other drugs is considered low. This review covers rando

Silver hydrogel urinary catheters: evaluation of safety and efficacy in single patient with chronic spinal cord injury.

Urinary tract infections (UTIs) are a large health burden for patients with spinal cord injury (SCI) who have neurogenic bladder dysfunction, especially those patients using indwelling catheters. One method that has shown promise in recent years is the use of a silver hydrogel catheter (SHC). This article describes the outcome of a subject who was part of a prospective, randomized, double-blind study and assigned to use an SHC for 6 months. Using the indwelling SHC effectively prevented this subject from developing a symptomatic UTI. He did not display any symptoms suggestive of silver toxicit

Patient safety as ethical practice: A qualitative study of the Protection of Life principle in nursing care.

BackgroundPatient safety is commonly conceptualized through ethical reductionism, risk management, and technical performance indicators. However, such approaches may insufficiently address the ethical, relational, spiritual, and culturally embedded dimensions of nursing care. Within Islamic ethical thought, the principle of Hifz al-Nafs (protection of life) offers a holistic moral framework for understanding patient protection beyond biomedical risk prevention.AimThis study aimed to explore Indonesian nurses' ethical understandings and lived experiences of patient safety and caring and to exam…
