Exploring the Impact of Bullying and Friendship on Mental Health Outcomes Among Transgender, Gender Diverse (TGD), and Cisgender Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual (LGB+) Youth.

Prejudice and discrimination put 2SLGBTQ+ youth at greater risk of developing poor mental health outcomes. Yet there is heterogeneity within this group, notably a greater risk for poor mental health outcomes in trans and gender diverse (TGD) youth. The goal of this study was to determine if the relationship between bullying and mental health outcomes, and the potential protective influence of peer friendship, differed between cisgender lesbian, gay and bisexual (LGB+) and TGD youth. Using data from the 12-year youth survey from All Our Families cohort (n = 221), we analyzed youth's responses o

Optimizing Anti-Snake Venom Strategies for Hemotoxic Envenomation in Northern India: Clinical Outcomes and Regional Challenge.

Snakebite envenomation, especially from hemotoxic species such as Daboia russelii and Echis carinatus, remains a significant public health challenge in the northern Indian states of Punjab, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, and Himachal Pradesh. Despite the availability of polyvalent anti-snake venom (ASV), inconsistent dosing strategies, delayed administration, and disparities in healthcare contribute to high morbidity and mortality rates. This review examines optimal ASV dosing protocols, clinical outcomes, and host-specific factors that influence the therapeutic efficacy in hemotoxic env

Factors associated with low self-compassion in young adults.

OBJECTIVE: Self-compassion comprises treating oneself non-judgementally with kindness and understanding during life challenges. Our aim was to identify, from among a diverse set of sociodemographic, lifestyle behavioural, psychological, family/peer social influence, and health indicators, factors associated with low self-compassion in a population-based sample of young adults. METHODS: Data on 37 factors potentially associated with low self-compassion were drawn from cycle 23 of the ongoing 24-year Nicotine Dependence in Teens (NDIT) study for 682 participants (Mage 30.5, SD = 1.0, 41% male).

The Microbial Revolution in the World of Joint Replacement Surgery.

BACKGROUND: The prevalence of revision surgery due to aseptic loosening and periprosthetic joint infection (PJI) following total hip and knee arthroplasty is growing. Strategies to prevent the need for revision surgery and its associated health-care costs and patient morbidity are needed. Therapies that modulate the gut microbiota to influence bone health and systemic inflammation are a novel area of research. METHODS: A literature review of preclinical and clinical peer-reviewed articles relating to the role of the gut microbiota in bone health and PJI was performed. RESULTS: There is evide

Decision-making about genetic health information among family dyads: a systematic literature review.

Decisions involving two individuals (i.e., dyadic decision-making) have been increasingly studied in healthcare research. There is evidence of bi-directional influences in decision-making processes among spousal, provider-patient and parent-child dyads. Genetic information can directly impact biologically related individuals. Thus, it is important to understand dyadic decision-making about genetic health information among family members. This systematic literature review aimed to identify literature examining decision-making among family dyads. Peer-reviewed publications were included if they

Social network influences on smoking, drinking and drug use in secondary school: centrifugal and centripetal forces.

We explore how school experiences and social networks structure young people's substance use in different institutional contexts. The concepts of 'selection' and 'influence' are situated within the context of bounded agency, counter-school cultures and Bourdieusian notions of capital. We employed individual and group interviews, network-mapping, and observations at two contrasting English secondary schools. Both schools were characterised by extended social network structures that appeared to influence patterns of substance use, although the mechanisms via which this occurred varied according

Medical students' perceptions of learning modalities: development and psychometric validation of the e-learning and face-to-face learning experience questionnaire.

Amidst the growing demand for effective blended learning, particularly post-COVID-19, understanding the key factors influencing student learning experiences is paramount. This study addresses this need by designing and validating a comprehensive questionnaire (ELFEQ) to assess these factors across both face-to-face (F2F) and e-learning environments in medical education. A quantitative, cross-sectional study was conducted with 298 students from Shiraz University of Medical Sciences (SUMS), Iran. Data were collected using the researcher-developed 27-item ELFEQ questionnaire (rated on a 5-point L

Temporal dynamics of psychosocial risk and resilience pathways in adolescent depressive and anxiety symptoms: a three-wave longitudinal study.

BACKGROUND: Adolescence is a critical neurodevelopmental stage marked by heightened sensitivity to psychosocial influences and increased risk for emotional disorders such as depression and anxiety. Although multiple psychosocial risk and protective factors have been identified, their interrelations and temporal patterning remain insufficiently understood, especially in Chinese populations. METHODS: We analyzed three-wave longitudinal data from 907 junior high school students in Northern China to examine associations among psychosocial stressors, contextual resources and mental health across ad

Contextual influences on Latino men's sexual and substance use behaviors following immigration to the Midwestern United States.

Objectives: Latinos in the United States experience a disproportionate number of HIV and other sexually transmitted infections (STIs) and higher use of alcohol and illegal drugs, which has been attributed to increases in risk behaviors following immigration. Whereas substantial research documents these behavioral changes, little is known about how immigrants increase their risk or why some immigrants increase their risk and other immigrants do not. This study explored how the social and normative context affects sexual and substance use behaviors among Latino immigrant men in a midsized Midwes

Human performance interfaces in air traffic control.

This paper examines how human performance factors in air traffic control (ATC) affect each other through their mutual interactions. The pape … t suggests that organisation influences play a more significant role than individual differences or peer influences on how the controllers interact with the software, hardware, and environment of the ATC system. There are mutual influences between the controller-software, controller-hardware, controller-environment, and controller-organisation interfaces of the …

Peer Relationships Are a Direct Cause of the Adolescent Mental Health Crisis: Interpretable Machine Learning Analysis of 2 Large Cohort Studies.

BACKGROUND: Converging evidence indicates an adolescent mental health crisis in Western societies that has developed and exacerbated over the past decade. The proposed driving factors of this trend include more screen time, physical inactivity, and social isolation, but their causal influence on mental health is insufficiently understood. OBJECTIVE: The objective of this study is to test whether and based on which predictor variables the development of mental health in adolescents in the last decade can be predicted and to better understand the causal chain of factors at work. METHODS: We im

Factors Associated with Recent HIV Testing among Heterosexuals at High Risk for HIV Infection in New York City.

BACKGROUND: The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends persons at high risk for HIV infection in the United States receive annual HIV testing to foster early HIV diagnosis and timely linkage to health care. Heterosexuals make up a significant proportion of incident HIV infections (>25%) but test for HIV less frequently than those in other risk categories. Yet factors that promote or impede annual HIV testing among heterosexuals are poorly understood. The present study examines individual/attitudinal-, social-, and structural-level factors associated with past-year HIV testing am
