Can a chronic dental infection be considered a cause of cardiovascular disease? A review of the literature.

Cardiovascular diseases (CVD) have a complex etiology determined by risk factors, which are in turn associated to a strong genetic component and to environmental factors. In the biological background for the development of CVD, low-grade chronic inflammation plays a role as a pathogenetic determinant of atherosclerosis. Dental infections have been associated with CVD. Periodontal disease is a chronic infection of the supporting tissues of the tooth that can lead to teeth loss. In recent years, a number of reports have demonstrated the possible relationship between periodontal disease and CVD.

Herpes Zoster: A Case Report of a Rare Ramification Leading to Secondary Infection.

The herpes virus causes herpes zoster (HZ) (shingles). It develops years later in elderly patients who were affected by the varicella-zoster virus in their childhood. The virus gets reactivated and typically localizes its symptoms to a particular dermatome. If left untreated, it can lead to dental complications, such as osteonecrosis, tooth exfoliation, periodontitis, calcified and devitalized pulps, periapical lesions, and root resorption, in addition to developmental irregularities, such as abnormally short roots and missing teeth. Here, we present the case of a 61-year-old male affected by

Dens evaginatus on occlusal surface of maxillary second molar: a case report.

Dens evaginatus is a rare dental anomaly characterized by the development of a tubercle on the occlusal surface of the tooth and can cause pulpitis, pulp necrosis, and periapical periodontitis due to tubercular fracture or attrition. Unlike with caries, pain caused by dens evaginatus may manifest itself in a distant location. Therefore, diagnosing the cause of that pain may prove problematic. Dens evaginatus usually occurs in the mandibular premolars. We report a successfully treated case in which dens evaginatus was difficult to diagnose due to distant radiation of pulpitis-induced pain. This…

Pathophysiology of acquired dental diseases of the horse.

Periodontitis, infundibular necrosis, and periapical infection are dental diseases commonly affecting adult horses. Routine dental examinations and care may help to prevent these diseases. Further investigation of the treatment of horses with these diseases using local antimicrobial therapy, restorative dentistry, and endodontic therapy is needed. An understanding of the pathogenesis of these diseases aids in diagnosis and treatment. Gingival hyperplasia and odontogenic tumors are uncommon but should remain in a list of differential diagnoses when examining a horse with pertinent clinical sign

Rheumatoid arthritis exacerbates apical periodontitis in Wistar rats, increasing IL-17, TNF-α, TRAP, and RANKL levels.

This study aimed to evaluate the influence of rheumatoid arthritis on the inflammatory and resorptive process of periapical lesions in an animal model. Forty Wistar rats were divided into four groups (n = 10): control (C), apical periodontitis (AP), rheumatoid arthritis (RA), and AP + RA. RA was induced by two injections into the caudal subcutaneous tissue containing 50 µL volume of methylated bovine albumin (Met-BSA, 40 mg/mL) and 5% glucose emulsified with CFA/complete Freund's adjuvant (Mycobacterium sp), and a third intra-articular injection in the right knee with half of the same solution

Resolution of maxillary sinus mucositis after endodontic treatment of maxillary teeth with apical periodontitis: a cone-beam computed tomography pilot study.

INTRODUCTION: Apical periodontitis (AP) is an inflammatory response that can affect the maxillary sinus. This study characterized maxillary sinus mucositis adjacent to teeth with AP and assessed its resolution after endodontic treatment. METHODS: Thirty maxillary sinuses in subjects (n = 29) who had AP associated with maxillary posterior teeth were imaged with cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT). When mucositis was detected, its resolution was assessed with CBCT scanning 3 months after treatment, and periapical healing was assessed using the periapical index (PAI) after 6 months. RESULTS: E

Treatment of Severe Chronic Periodontitis with Surgical and Prosthetic Intervention: A 9-year Follow-up Case Report.

A 60-year-old woman presented with the chief complaint of mobility of tooth #16. Gingival swelling and calculus were observed. Clinical examination revealed that 49.4% of sites had a probing depth (PD) of ≥4 mm and 72% of sites bleeding on probing. Radiographic examination revealed vertical bone resorption in #35 and horizontal resorption in other regions. Periapical region radiolucency on #16 and 27 suggested a perio-endo lesion. The clinical diagnosis was severe chronic periodontitis. Initial periodontal therapy mainly comprised the following: oral hygiene instruction; quadrant scaling and r

Hemisection of Grossly-Decayed Teeth With Socket Preservation: A Case Report.

Hemisection of a molar is a surgical procedure involving the removal or separation of one root together with its corresponding portion of the crown. This approach allows for the preservation of the remaining tooth structure and surrounding alveolar bone, while providing support for subsequent fixed prosthetic rehabilitation. The present case report describes the successful application of hemisection to retain a severely compromised mandibular first molar with periodontal and periapical involvement. Following prosthetic rehabilitation, the treatment achieved a favourable outcome. Through meticu

Assessment of panoramic radiography as a national oral examination tool: review of the literature.

PURPOSE: The purpose of this review is to evaluate the possibility of panoramic radiography as a national oral examination tool. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This report was carried out by review of the literatures. RESULTS: Panoramic radiography has sufficient diagnostic accuracy in dental caries, periodontal diseases, and other lesions. Also, the effective dose of panoramic radiography is lower than traditional full-mouth periapical radiography. CONCLUSION: Panoramic radiography will improve the efficacy of dental examination in national oral examination. However, more studies are required to e

Unusual management problems in the treatment of a long-standing destructive periapical cyst. Report of a case.

A case report is presented in which an orthognathically compromised patient presented with a destructive periapical lesion that caused resorption of first and second molar roots and buccal and palatal cortical plates. The initial diagnosis and treatment were influenced by the absence of pre-existing dental records and an unrecountable dental history. Unusual endodontic management problems were encountered when copious intracoronal fluid, determined to be saliva, continually flowed through the open canals via a periodontal defect. The pathology report described the rare finding of large portion

Endodontic diagnostic terminology update.

Determination of the etiology of the patient's chief complaint and a correct diagnosis are paramount prior to a recommendation of endodontic therapy. Reproduction of the patient's chief complaint is critical. If the chief complaint cannot be reproduced, consider consultation with or referral to an endodontist or orofacial pain specialist. The diagnostic terminology presented in this update provides for a more accurate description and communication of the health or pathological conditions of both pulpal and apical tissues. This information is summarized in Table I.

PPAR-γ Inhibits Chronic Apical Periodontitis by Facilitating Macrophage Efferocytosis.

This study aimed to elucidate the role of peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor-γ (PPAR-γ) in regulating macrophage efferocytosis during the pathogenesis of chronic apical periodontitis (CAP). Clinical specimens, rat periapical lesion models, and an in vitro model simulating the CAP inflammatory milieu were employed to examine the contribution of PPAR-γ to efferocytosis throughout disease progression. The expression of PPAR-γ in vivo was assessed by single-cell RNA sequencing and immunohistochemical (IHC) staining. Pearson's correlation and linear trend tests were conducted to investigate

Systemic antibiotics for symptomatic apical periodontitis and acute apical abscess in adults.

BACKGROUND: Dental pain can have a detrimental effect on quality of life. Symptomatic apical periodontitis and acute apical abscess are common causes of dental pain and arise from an inflamed or necrotic dental pulp, or infection of the pulpless root canal system. Clinical guidelines recommend that the first-line treatment for teeth with these conditions should be removal of the source of inflammation or infection by local, operative measures, and that systemic antibiotics are currently only recommended for situations where there is evidence of spreading infection (cellulitis, lymph node invol

[Application of tricalcium phosphate in one visit root canal treatment].

This paper reports the successful use of tricalcium phosphate (TCP) as periapical barrier material in animal experiments and clinics. The results of animal experiments showed that TCP had good biocompatibility with periapical tissues. At 6 weeks there were osteoids deposited on the surface of TCP. At 12 weeks osteogenesis occurred around the TCP particles and combined each other closely. At 24 weeks around the periapex there were bone deposits and a tendency of apical closure. On the basis of experiments TCP was used to treat 17 chronic periapicitis in 15 patients. All cases were young permane
