BACKGROUND: The Global Network for Women's and Children's Health Research (Global Network) conducts clinical trials in resource-limited countries through partnerships among U.S. investigators, international investigators based in in low and middle-income countries (LMICs) and a central data coordinating center. The Global Network's objectives include evaluating low-cost, sustainable interventions to improve women's and children's health in LMICs. Accurate reporting of births, stillbirths, neonatal deaths, maternal mortality, and measures of obstetric and neonatal care is critical to determine

BACKGROUND: Babies born after midtrimester preterm prelabour rupture of membranes (PPROM) are at risk to develop neonatal pulmonary hypoplasia. Perinatal mortality and morbidity after this complication is high. Oligohydramnios in the midtrimester following PPROM is considered to cause a delay in lung development. Repeated transabdominal amnioinfusion with the objective to alleviate oligohydramnios might prevent this complication and might improve neonatal outcome.
METHODS/DESIGN: Women with PPROM and persisting oligohydramnios between 16 and 24 weeks gestational age will be asked to participa…

Data were analyzed from 36,068 U.S. pregnancies to determine whether any of the more frequent maternal risk factors are associated with seasonal variations in perinatal mortality rates. These mortality rates decreased below the yearly mean in January and rose sharply above the mean during the spring. The perinatal mortality rate in May/June was 30% above the rate in January/February (P less than 0.001). This and other variations in perinatal mortality rates closely followed changes in maternal coital activity. The proportion of women having coitus was 26% greater in May/June than in January/Fe…

BACKGROUND To evaluate the association between the isolated single umbilical artery (iSUA) and perinatal outcomes, including pregnancy outcomes and perinatal complications. MATERIAL AND METHODS We performed a meta-analysis of 15 eligible studies regarding the relationship between the iSUA and perinatal outcomes, including gestational age at delivery, nuchal cord, placental weight, small for gestational age (SGA), oligohydramnios, polyhydramnios, pregnancy-induced hypertension (PIH), gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM), preeclampsia, and perinatal mortality. The overall odds ratios (OR) or stan…

Current early diagnosis, surveillance and intervention options make it hard to determine the natural course of twin pregnancies, especially regarding spontaneous preterm delivery and perinatal mortality. We studied the natural course in monochorionic (MC) and dichorionic (DC) twin pregnancies in a historical cohort. Twin pregnancies were studied in a unique database of 651 twin pairs born in the period 1907 to 1938. We examined the effect of chorionicity on gestational age, birthweight, perinatal mortality, intertwin birthweight differences, the incidence of preeclampsia and maternal mortality…

BACKGROUND: Severe maternal morbidity is associated with substantially increased risks of adverse neonatal outcomes. However, few studies ha … s were pregnancy and delivery complications, and offspring composite severe neonatal morbidity, and perinatal mortality (ie, stillbirths or neonatal deaths) within the first 28 days after birth, in the second delivery. We used multivariable generalized linear models to obtain adjusted risk ratios and 95% confidence intervals, adjusted for confounders.

Seventy-nine cases of eclampsia (incidence 0.22%) are reviewed. The corrected maternal and perinatal mortality rates were 12.6% and 28.3%. Maternal and perinatal mortality were directly related to number of fits, severity of eclampsia, delay in onset of treatment, and duration of labour. Whereas the maternal mortality was 23 per cent in patients delivered vaginally and 8.6 per cent in patients delivered by caesarean section, the perinatal mortality was almost the same in both types of delivery.

According to estimates in 2015, there were 303,000 maternal deaths, 2.7 million newborn deaths and 2.6 million stillbirths. A wide range of factors, from health system dynamics to social determinants of health and underlying health conditions, contribute to this outcome. The highest mortality risk for mothers and their babies is on the day of birth, and most of these deaths are preventable. The largest burden of deaths occurs in low-income countries, particularly in sub-Saharan Africa and South Asia, due to their young population and high fertility. Substantial reductions in maternal and newbo

OBJECTIVE: To audit intrapartum fetal and early neonatal deaths of infants weighing >or=2000 g in a regional hospital in western Tanzania.
METHODS: The 3-delays methodology was applied to a cohort of perinatal deaths from July 2002 to July 2004.
RESULTS: The overall perinatal mortality rate in the hospital was 38 per 1000 live births, and in just over half of these cases the birth weight was >or=2000 g. The leading clinicopathologic causes of death were birth asphyxia (19.0%), prolonged or obstructed labor (18.5%), antepartum hemorrhage (11.5%), and uterine rupture (9.0%). First delays occur…

To identify components of smoking-related increased perinatal mortality, detailed analyses of data from the Ontario Perinatal Mortality Study (50,000 births, 1,300 deaths, 1960-1961) measured the relationship of maternal smoking to birth weight, gestation, placental complications, and perinatal mortality. Cross-tabulations with other factors and multiple adjustment showed increases with amount smoked of birth weights less than 2500 gm, gestations less than 38 weeks, placenta previa, abruptio placentae, and perinatal mortality. These significant, smoking-related increases were independent of mo…

Analysis of computer-stored State of Missouri birth and death records over a 5 year period revealed 3,594 twin pregnancies (1.02% of all pregnancies), which accounted for 10.1% of the perinatal deaths. The mean birth weight according to weeks of gestation was computed for the pregnancies with no complications noted prior to labor and the perinatal mortality rate was determined. Complications of pregnancy were evaluated. Low birth weight appears to be the major factor in the elevated perinatal death rate in twin pregnancy, with a significant elevation of the perinatal death rate noted with labo…

Neonatal mortality within the first few days of life is a pressing issue in sub-Saharan Africa, including Ethiopia. Despite efforts to achieve the targets set by the Sustainable Development Goals, the rate of neonatal mortality in Ethiopia has increased from 29 to 33 deaths per 1000 live births. This study aimed to investigate and identify significant determinants of neonatal mortality within the first 72 h of life in Ethiopia. Utilizing data from the 2019 Ethiopia Demographic and Health Survey, we employed Generalized Poisson regression analysis following rigorous model fitness assessment. Ou

BACKGROUND: Neonatal mortality is among the key national and international indicators of health services. The global Sustainable Development Goal target for neonatal mortality is fewer than 12 deaths per 1000 livebirths, by 2030. Neonatal mortality estimates in the 2019 Ethiopian Demographic Health Survey found 25·7 deaths per 1000 livebirths. Subnational surveys specific to Tigray, Ethiopia, reported a neonatal mortality lifetime prevalence of 7·13 deaths. Another government report from the Tigray region estimated a neonatal mortality rate of ten deaths per 1000 livebirths in 2020. Despite th

BACKGROUND: Early neonatal death accounts for a significant number of under-5 mortality worldwide. However, the problem is under-researched and under-reported in low-income and middle-income countries, particularly in Ethiopia. The magnitude of mortality during the early neonatal period and associated factors should be studied for designing appropriate policies, and strategies that could help tackle the problem. Hence, this study aimed to determine the prevalence and identify factors associated with early neonatal mortality in Ethiopia.
METHODS: This study was conducted by using data from Eth

BACKGROUND: Birth asphyxia is the second leading cause of neonatal death in Ethiopia, next to preterm-associated infections. Understanding the causes of death in asphyxiated newborns will help to design appropriate care. This study identifies predictors of neonatal mortality in asphyxiated newborns in selected hospitals in Northwest Ethiopia.
METHODS: An institution-based prospective cohort study of 480 newborns with birth asphyxia was conducted at Debre Markos Comprehensive Specialized Hospital, Shegaw Motta District Hospital, and Injibara General Hospital. All newborns with asphyxia admitte

OBJECTIVE: To describe the perinatal mortality rate (PMR) of birth defects and to define the relationship between birth defects (including a broad range of specific defects) and a broad range of factors.
METHODS: Data were obtained from the Birth Defects Surveillance System in Hunan Province, China, 2010-2020. The prevalence rate (PR) of birth defects is the number of birth defects per 1000 fetuses (births and deaths at 28 weeks of gestation and beyond). PMR is the number of perinatal deaths per 100 fetuses. PR and PMR with 95% confidence intervals (CI) were calculated using the log-binomial …
