The tarsal tunnel syndrome. Report of two cases of unusual cause.

Since Keck described the tarsal tunnel syndrome (TTS) in 1962, it has been one of the most frequently diagnosed of the entrapment neuropathies. TTS is usually of unknown origin. This is a report of two unusual cases: TTS caused by neurilemmoma in a 33-year-old woman, and TTS caused by subperiosteal ganglion in a 14-year-old girl. The symptoms were relieved, in both instances, with surgical excision.

Subperiosteal hematoma. Another scintigraphic "doughnut".

The "doughnut" sign has been described frequently in brain and skeletal scintigraphy, but not previously in a subperiosteal hematoma associated with neurofibromatosis and focal gigantism. The primary cause and evolution of this skeletal "doughnut" sign is discussed; a brief review of other causes of this scintigraphic finding also is given.

Surgical anatomy relevant to the transpalpebral subperiosteal elevation of the midface.

BACKGROUND: The surgical anatomy of the midface relevant to its subperiosteal elevation and repositioning is assessed. OBJECTIVES: The aim … 3 mm inferior to ZM suture. On average the ION had 5.2 branches that traveled for 10.2 mm above the periosteum before they passed into a superficial plane. Division of the zygomatico-masseteric retaining ligaments allowed for elevation of the midface by 4.8 ± 1.0 mm medially and 5.5 ± .9 mm laterally. CONCLUSIONS: Branches of the ZBFN and ION lie in close p …

Reconstruction of bone defect with autograft fibula and retained part of tibia after marginal resection of periosteal osteosarcoma: a case report.

Periosteal osteosarcoma is a rare subtype of osteosarcoma. Wide surgical removal is the commonly used treatment-method algorithm. However, the limb-salvage procedure of periosteal osteosarcoma in the distal tibia is a technical challenge to orthopedic surgeons because of the scarcity of soft tissue and subcutaneous nature in the anteromedial aspect. We encountered a 16-year-old female patient with periosteal osteosarcoma in the distal half of the left tibia diagnosed preoperatively based upon the CT images and a needle biopsy. A unique identical surgical technique was applied in the case, incl

The amount of periosteal apposition required to maintain bone strength during aging depends on adult bone morphology and tissue-modulus degradation rate.

Although the continued periosteal apposition that accompanies age-related bone loss is a biomechanically critical target for prophylactic treatment of bone fragility, the magnitude of periosteal expansion required to maintain strength during aging has not been established. A new model for predicting periosteal apposition rate for men and women was developed to better understand the complex, nonlinear interactions that exist among bone morphology, tissue-modulus, and aging. Periosteal apposition rate varied up to eightfold across bone sizes, and this depended on the relationship between cortica

[Cartilage repair techniques--current status and potentials].

A variety of cartilage repair techniques has been introduced into clinical application during the past 20 years. Tissue engineering is a technology which has the potential to treat these defects with low morbidity.

RESULTS: The palatal aponeurosis is a distinct anatomic entity continuous with the periosteum of the nasal cavity. The tendon of the tensor veli palatini terminated on the inferior side of the aponeurosis. Circumferential periosteal sleeve resection: results in limb-length discrepancy secondary to poliomyelitis.

We report the results of circumferential periosteal sleeve resection of lower-limb bones for mild degrees of limb-length discrepancy (mean, 3.5 cm) secondary to postpolio residual paralysis in 23 patients. Results were expressed by calculating percentage of length discrepancy of the operated-on limb with respect to the normal limb and gain in length in centimeters of the operated-on limb over the normal limb. All patients had a uniform trend of gain in length with response in the femur lasting for approximately 1 year, whereas that in the tibia persisted >2 years. Circumferential periosteal sl

[Treatment of avascular necrosis of femoral head by periosteal cell transplantation: an experimental study].

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the effect of periosteal cell transplantation on the repair of avascular necrosis of femoral head (ANFH). On the basis of successful culture of periosteal cells in vitro. METHODS: The tibial periostea of new born dog were excised and cultured under aseptic conditions. Eight adult dogs were used and divided into 2 groups: experimental group and control group. The animal model of ANFH was made by transferring the freed femoral head into the muscle under the ilium on one side in each dog. Two weeks after the establishment of ANFH, the cultured periosteal cells were coll

Angular limb deformity in a calf treated by periosteotomy and wedge osteotomy.

A carpus valgus deformity was diagnosed in a five-week-old Brown Swiss calf. The 45 degrees deformity was caused by the malaligned healing of a fracture of the left metacarpus after birth trauma. The deviation improved to 25 degrees after being treated with a semicircular lateral periosteotomy above the distal physis of the radius. A complete correction was made by means of a wedge osteotomy five months after the first treatment. A 20 degrees wedge of bone was removed. The metacarpus was stabilised with a seven-hole dynamic compression plate which was removed 12 weeks later. Thirty months late

Differentiation of an epiperiosteal sheath in avian hyperostosis induced by myeloblastosis associated virus MAV-2 (0).

If myeloblastosis associated virus MAV-2(0) is injected in chick embryos, it causes a severe, irreversible and generalized hyperostosis which subsequently follows a chronic course. An epiperiosteal sheath forms at the site of the lesion, whose development follows that of the hyperostosis. The sheath contains not only cell infiltrates, blood vessels and myoblasts, but also highly specialized cells such as Pacinian corpuscles. The structural lesions are absolutely different from these described in human, mammal or avian spontaneous or induced osteopetrosis. Our initial description of the "hypero

[Pseudotumoral progression in a case of periosteal ossification of the femur].

A case of periosteal ossification of the femur in a 14-yr-old boy is reported. The clinical, radiological and scintiscan pictures illustrated marked pseudotumoral lesions in a subject with a mild form of osteopsathyrosis.
