Personality adjustment of children and adolescents with hypopituitarism.

Sixteen children and adolescents with extreme short stature secondary to hypopituitarism were compared to a matched group of physically healthy peers on a variety of psychological tests assessing general adjustment, body image, sex role development, sex-related fantasy, and reactions to frustration. With the exception of their reactions to frustrations, the psychological adjustment of children with hypopituitarism compared favorably with that of normal children. Children with hypopituitarism typically perceived less adaptive, mature solutions to frustrating situations than did peers of average

Personality and medical perception in benign myalgic encephalomyelitis.

In an outbreak of benign myalgic encephalomyelitis in a girls' school all the residential pupils, both those affected and those unaffected, were investigated. Special virological tests were essentially negative, but it seemed that a few girls had had a viral infection. Psychological testing showed that among younger girls the patients were more neurotic than the others. Girls with various disorders were found to have been classified as having the same disorder, because of what has been called altered medical perception. The conclusions of an international symposium on this condition were not s

The DSM-III personality disorders section: a commentary.

The author reviews the DSM-III section on personality disorders, discusses several of its more controversial diagnoses, and suggests some possible alternatives. He attributes the continued low reliability of personality diagnoses, compared with the other major sections of DSM-III, to two inherent obstacles: the lack of clear boundaries demarcating the personality disorders from normality and from one another, and the confounding influence of state and role factors. Nonetheless, the DSM-III multiaxial system highlights the importance of personality diagnosis and, together with the provision of …

Personality patterns of adolescent poor and good sleepers.

To determine whether poor sleepers have a unique personality constellation significantly different from that of good sleepers, a sample of 162 emotionally disturbed adolescent poor sleepers was compared to a sample of 153 emotionally disturbed adolescent good sleepers on standardized personality instruments. Poor sleepers were found to have a high incidence of neurotic psychopathology with personality patterns characterized by depression, fearfulness, inhibition, anxiety, and rumination. In contrast, good sleepers showed quasi-healthy and/or characterological patterns. While this study does no…

Intellectual and personality changes associated with carotid endarterectomy.

Eleven patients with at least 40-50% carotid artery stenosis were given intelligence and personality tests just prior to and 6 weeks after carotid endarterectomy, a surgical procedure designed to remove arteriosclerotic blockage. When compared with 8 control patients, endarterectomy patients showed increases in Perceptual-Organization IQ, decreases in time to complete a perceptual motor task, and significant reductions in suspicion, confusion, disorientation, and other personality symptoms generally associated with senility.

Personality traits and their relationship to traffic violations.

There is a relationship between personality traits of enlisted personnel at one mid-west Air Force Base and their frequency of moving violations. The 52 individuals who received one or two moving violations were more emotionally stable than the 33 non-offenders and the 18 chronic offenders. Discriminant analysis showed significant differences between the personality characteristics of the occasional offender and the other two groups, but none between the chronic offender and the non-offender. The personality characteristics of the chronic offender resembled those of Zelhart's alcoholic offende…

Heritability of personality traits in adult male twins.

Personality test data from the California Psychological Inventory were collected on 99 pairs of identical and 99 pairs of fraternal adult male twins. Heritabilities were comuted for all 18 scales and compared to the heritabilities for "pure" scales with overlapping items omitted. Two of the pure scales, Responsibility and Femininity, had zero heritabilities, whereas all of the full scales had moderate to high heritabilities. It was concluded that item overlap has contributed significantly to previous failures to find evidence for the differential heritability of personality traits as measured …

Nonpsychotic personality disturbances: a re-evaluation and reclassification.

The classical notion of neurosis as the prototypical form of nonpsychotic personality disturbance must be rejected in favor of the categories of (a) personality pattern disturbance and disorder of life style, and most especially, (b) character disorder. Category (a) would include schizoid, paranoid, and cyclothymic personality pattern disturbances and compulsive and hysteroid personality as disorders of life style. Each of these would occupy one end of a 'psychotoid' continuum, at the other end of which would be a familiar type of psychosis such as paranoid schizophrenia or pseudoneurotic schi…

Personality correlates of drug preference among college undergraduates.

Three groups of college drug users--those expressing a preference for marijuana, amphetamines, or barbiturates--reported on experiences resulting from their drugs, and these groups, together with a group of nondrug-users, completed the Omnibus Personality Inventory (OPI). On the OPI the nonusers appeared more conventional and conforming than each drug group. Those preferring marijuana were less anxious than any other group, but the most distinctive group was that preferring barbiturates, which appeared the least intellectually inclined and the most emotionally distressed. This group's personal…
