Integrating the pace-of-life syndrome across species, sexes and individuals: covariation of life history and personality under pesticide exposure.

The pace-of-life syndrome (POLS) hypothesis integrates covariation of life-history traits along a fast-slow continuum and covariation of behavioural traits along a proactive-reactive personality continuum. Few studies have investigated these predicted life-history/personality associations among species and between sexes. Furthermore, whether and how contaminants interfere with POLS patterns remains unexplored. We tested for covariation patterns in life history and in behaviour, and for life-history/personality covariation among species, among individuals within species and between sexes. Moreo

The impacts of development finance for climate on public health outcomes and life satisfaction: evidence from developing countries in the global south.

This study assesses how development finance for climate (DFC) affects public health outcomes and life satisfaction in developing countries across the global south (GS), using panel data for 69 developing countries from 2011 to 2021. The instrumental-variable generalized method of moments (IV-GMM) is used to address endogeneity. Several alternative approaches are used for robustness analysis. The findings provide robust evidence that increased DFC is positively associated with improvements in public health outcomes and life satisfaction in developing countries in the GS. More specifically, a 1%

A meta-ethnographic systematic review of women's experiences of homelessness in high income environments.

BACKGROUND: Homelessness is a significant public policy and health service challenge globally. Often identified as a 'wicked problem' homelessness is hard to define with limited data confirming the exact numbers of people who are homeless due to varying metrics employed many of which likely exclude women by design. Research and policy have primarily focused on the experiences of single men, and the impact of homelessness on women and their experiences of it are not well understood. OBJECTIVE: To synthesise evidence from qualitative studies of homelessness to identify key dimensions of women i

The association between disability and all-cause mortality in low-income and middle-income countries: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: There are 1·3 billion people with disabilities globally. On average, they have poorer health than their non-disabled peers, but the extent of increased risk of premature mortality is unknown. We aimed to systematically review the association between disability and mortality in low-income and middle-income countries (LMICs). METHODS: We searched MEDLINE, Global Health, PsycINFO, and EMBASE from Jan 1, 1990 to Nov 14, 2022. Longitudinal epidemiological studies in any language with a comparator group that measured the association between disability and all-cause mortality in people o

Temperament and its role in developmental psychopathology.

Temperament refers to early-appearing variation in emotional reactivity. The core dimensions of temperament and optimal method for assessment continue to be sources of considerable discussion. Nevertheless, the moderate stability of most temperamental traits and the strong influence of genetic and unique environmental factors have been well established, along with temperament's association with childhood psychiatric disorders. Both temperamental predisposition toward experiencing negative emotions and low inhibitory control are linked to many psychiatric conditions, while other dimensions, suc

Psychosexual development in individuals who have female pseudohermaphroditism.

This article describes psychosexual outcomes and issues in syndromes of female pseudohermaphroditism, broadly defined. Congenital adrenal hyperplasia, the most common cause of intersex genitalia at birth, is covered as are Turner Syndrome and syndromes in which XY infants who are born with undervirilized genitalia are assigned and reared as girls (androgen insensitivity syndrome; cloacal exstrophy). The same hormonal abnormalities that cause most physical intersex conditions also influence brain development and behavior; individuals who have intersex conditions can show behavior that is in bet

Delineation of social phobia in Saudia Arabians.

Eighty Saudi Arabian males with social phobia who met DSMIIIR criteria, were evaluated psychiatrically and socially according to the MMPI social withdrawal scale standardized to the Saudi population. They were empirically grouped as mild, moderate or severe cases. They were also evaluated symptomatically according to the Leeds anxiety-depression scale to give ratings of depression and anxiety, separately and in combination. Thirty-seven and a half percent and 55% of the patients were mild-moderately and severely anxious respectively; 55% and 34% were mild-moderately and significantly depressed

Treatment outlines for avoidant, dependent and passive-aggressive personality disorders. The Quality Assurance Project.

Treatment outlines for avoidant, dependent and passive-aggressive personality disorders were developed by having nominated experts consider their own views in the light of the treatment literature and the responses of practising psychiatrists. The experts recommend that long-term psychotherapy is the treatment of choice and that a considerable component of the outcome will be related to the therapeutic relationship. Assessment, general approaches to treatment, and strategies in psychodynamic management are outlined in some detail. For those individuals for whom long-term therapy is not availab

The social effects in adult life of chronic physical illness since childhood.

UNLABELLED: An unselected group of 487 (222 females, 265 males) patients with juvenile onset chronic physical disorders was studied at the age of 19-25 years for their social outcome and compared with an age-matched group of 202 physically healthy controls. The interview covered both comprehensive and vocational schooling, data on their employment status, relationship to parents and sexual development in detail. The overall social maturation index showed poor social maturation in patients more often than in the controls. At the time of the study 23% of the patients and 11% of the controls had

Since Exposure to Mental Trauma, Especially War Trauma, Causes Personality Changes, Should Deliberate Exposure to Mental Health Trauma of Civilians Be in Itself a War Crime?

Mental trauma is a consequence of war. Here we consider whether the inflicting of such trauma, which could cause personality changes, should be considered a war crime in its own right, especially when it is civilians who are exposed to mental trauma. We make the argument based on a review of the development of personality disorders in persons exposed to mental trauma caused by war, and we make the argument that it is possible to demonstrate both physiological and anatomical changes in the brain of such persons, which could account for the observed behavioural and personality changes. Therefore

Borderline personality disorder: an overview of history, diagnosis and treatment in adolescents.

Borderline personality disorder (BPD) is a cluster B personality disorder. It is characterized by erratic behaviors, emotional instability and one of its hallmarks is self injurious behavior, which starts in adolescence. Patients with BPD are difficult to treat, most have a history of child sexual abuse, about a quarter present with sexual abuse from a caretaker. Although personality disorders are diagnosed only in adults, BPD manifests itself in adolescence in the form of uncontrollable anger, self mutilations, dissociation and other such behaviors. Hence, there is a growing number of scienti

Serotonergic function in children with attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder: relationship to later antisocial personality disorder.

BACKGROUND: Impulsive aggression in adulthood is associated with disturbances in serotonergic function. In contrast, research examining this association in childhood has yielded inconsistent results. AIMS: The current study examined the prospective relationship between serotonergic function measured in childhood and the later emergence of antisocial personality disorder. METHOD: Hormonal response to fenfluramine, an index of serotonergic function, was assessed in 58 children with attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder between 1990 and 1997 when they were aged 7-11 years. Approximately 9 ye

Effects of parenting quality on adolescents' personality resemblance to their parents. The TRAILS study.

This study considers the development of resemblance between 741 adolescents and their biological parents, across six NEO-PI-R personality traits known to be important in psychological problems: anger-hostility, impulsiveness, vulnerability, assertiveness, excitement-seeking, and self-discipline. We modelled the association between perceived parental warmth and rejection at age eleven and personality resemblance to parents at about age sixteen. Parenting experienced during early adolescence was related to the degree and direction in which adolescents resembled their parents five years later in

Evaluation of potential kidney donors with the personality assessment inventory: normative data for a unique population.

Many transplant centers require personality assessment and/or psychiatric clearance prior to allowing an individual to donate a kidney. This is a unique cohort for personality assessment, and there is no normative information available for this population on standardized self-report measures such as the Personality Assessment Inventory (PAI). We evaluated a prospective sample of 434 kidney donor candidates with development of normative T-scores relevant to this specific comparison group. Compared to the original normative group from the PAI manual, potential kidney donors are 5-7 T-score point

Personality traits, coping style, and perceived threat as predictors of posttraumatic stress disorder after exposure to a terrorist attack: a prospective study.

OBJECTIVES: This prospective study examined the role of pretraumatic personality factors, coping style, proximity to a terrorist attack, and its perceived threat to the survivors in the prediction of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) after a suicide bomber's attack on a bus. METHOD: The study sample consisted of 180 undergraduate students who were coincidentally evaluated 2 weeks before a terrorist explosion in a bus heading toward their university and reevaluated 1 week, 1 month, and 6 months after the explosion. RESULTS: A hierarchal regression model revealed that increased risk for PTS

From strain to estrangement: the role of personality in predicting parent-child relational outcomes.

INTRODUCTION: Parent-child estrangement is a prevalent yet understudied phenomenon, with existing research largely emphasizing circumstantial and cultural explanations while overlooking the potential role of personality. Guided by Five-Factor Theory, the present study examined whether Big Five personality traits and their lower-order aspects predict estrangement outcomes among parents and adult children within strained relational contexts. METHODS: Using a cross-sectional survey design, participants (N = 520; 368 parents, 152 adult children) were recruited from an online parent-child estrange

A broad internalizing dimension accounts for the genetic associations between personality and individual internalizing disorders.

Much research has demonstrated that psychopathology can be described in terms of broad dimensions, representing liability for multiple psychiatric disorders. Broad spectra of psychopathology (e.g., internalizing and externalizing) are increasingly used as targets for research investigating the development, etiology, and course of psychopathology because they account for patterns of relatedness among disorders that were once presumed distinct. Thus, these spectra represent alluring targets due to their comprehensive and parsimonious nature. Nevertheless, little research has established the role

Temperament, personality, and the mood and anxiety disorders.

Literature on temperament, personality, and mood and anxiety disorders is reviewed. The review is organized primarily around L. A. Clark and D. Watson's (1991b) tripartite model for these disorders, but other influential approaches are also examined. Negative affectivity (or neuroticism) appears to be a vulnerability factor for the development of anxiety and depression, indicates poor prognosis, and is itself affected by the experience of disorder. Positive affectivity (or extraversion) is related more specifically to depression, may be a risk factor for its development, suggests poor prognosi
