Anxiety and Emotional Intelligence as Predictors of Coping with Stress in Patients with Personality Disorders-A Single-Arm Pre-Post Observational Study.

Background: The aim of this study was to examine the relationship between anxiety levels, emotional intelligence, and stress coping strategies in individuals diagnosed with personality disorders. According to Lazarus and Folkman's transactional model of stress, the appraisal of stressors and available psychological resources determines the selection of coping strategies-whether adaptive or maladaptive. Material and Methods: This observational case series study involved 30 individuals diagnosed with personality disorders (ICD-10 codes F60 and F61). Psychological assessments were conducted at tw

Obsessive compulsive personality traits: Understanding the chain of pathogenesis from health to disease.

BACKGROUND: Obsessive-Compulsive Personality Disorder (OCPD) is the most common personality disorder across the globe, and has been associated with heightened impulsivity and compulsivity. Examination of whether these findings extend to people with subsyndromal OCPD may shed light on pathogenic mechanisms contributing to the ultimate expression of full personality disorder. METHODS: Non-treatment seeking participants were recruited in the general community of two US cities, and completed a detailed clinical assessment, along with questionnaires and cognitive tests relating to impulsivity and

Neural and personality correlates of individual differences related to the effects of acute tryptophan depletion on future reward evaluation.

BACKGROUND/AIMS: In general, humans tend to discount the value of delayed reward. An increase in the rate of discounting leads to an inability to select a delayed reward over a smaller immediate reward (reward-delay impulsivity). Although deficits in the serotonergic system are implicated in this reward-delay impulsivity, there is individual variation in response to serotonin depletion. The aim of the present study was to investigate whether the effects of serotonin depletion on the ability to evaluate future reward are affected by individual personality traits or brain activation. METHODS: P

Developing a sociological framework for dually diagnosed women.

This exploratory study was conducted with the purpose of enumerating both particular social stressors (e.g., the presence of trauma) and the incidence of a comorbid diagnosis (i.e., personality disorder[s] and substance abuse) on a sample of women in a residential therapeutic community. The women in the study were assessed within the first 3 weeks following admission into drug treatment, and then again 6 months after leaving the program. The initial assessment generally took 2 hours and consisted of the Structured Clinical Inventory for DSM-III-R-Patient edition (SCID-II), Addiction Severity I

Therapy matchmaking: Patient-therapist match in personality traits and attachment style.

OBJECTIVE: This study examined the relationships between patient-therapist similarity and therapy outcome. We aimed to explore whether patient-therapist match in personality and attachment styles leads to a better therapy outcome. METHOD: We collected data from 77 patient-therapist dyads in short-term dynamic therapy. Patients' and therapists' personality traits (Big-5 Inventory) and attachment styles (ECR) were assessed prior to beginning therapy. Outcome was measured on the OQ-45. RESULTS: When patients and therapists scored either high or low on neuroticism and conscientiousness we found

NEO-five factor personality traits as predictors of response to two forms of group psychotherapy.

The relationships between patient personality variables and outcome for 107 psychiatric outpatients with complicated grief who completed either interpretive or supportive short-term group therapy were investigated. The personality variables were assessed prior to treatment with the NEO-Five Factor Inventory (NEO-FFI). For patients in both forms of therapy, extraversion, conscientiousness, and openness were directly associated with favorable treatment outcome. In contrast, neuroticism was inversely related to favorable outcome for patients in both forms of therapy. Agreeableness was directly re

Prognostic factors in outpatient psychotherapy of bulimia.

Little is known about prognostic factors in the treatment of bulimic patients. In the context of an ongoing study we looked at 1-year symptomatic outcome of 37 outpatients fulfilling DSM-III-R criteria for bulimia nervosa in relation to a variety of measures at first assessment. These included multiple measures of depression, measures of borderline personality disorder, a personality inventory, a symptom checklist and information about the history and the severity of the illness. Results add evidence to the importance of personality variables in predicting outcome: patients with high scores on…

The MCMI as a measure of DSM-III.

The Millon Clinical Multiaxial Inventory (MCMI) has been interpreted as a measure of DSM-III disorders. However, the MCMI was constructed and validated primarily as a measure of Millon's (1969, 1981) taxonomy, not DSM-III. Comparison of the two taxonomies and examination of the MCMI's content validity for two of the MCMI scales indicate only a partial congruence between the Millon and DSM-III taxonomies. There has been no published empirical research concerning the relationship between the MCMI and DSM-III, and the derivation and cross-validation research for the MCMI scales employed Millon's

The Relationship between Childhood Trauma and Depression in Early Adulthood: The Roles of Resilience and Personality Type.

BACKGROUND: The relationship between childhood trauma and depression in early adulthood is complex and influenced by factors such as resilience and personality type. This study aims to investigate the mediating role of resilience and the moderating role of personality types in this relationship. METHODS: A total of 1059 undergraduates (mean age = 19.87 ± 1.82 years; 48.1% men, 51.9% women) were surveyed. The Big Five Personality Inventory (BFI) was used to assess the personality dimensions of the participants, which were further analyzed using latent profile analysis (LPA). Childhood trauma e…

Neural impacts of personality on deception for applications of deception detection.

BACKGROUND: Although universal, deception may be a sign of certain mental disorders and may impede the effectiveness of clinical intervention. However, individual difference exists in deception, and its underlying neural mechanisms remain unclear, thereby limiting the applicability of deception detection for clinical diagnosis. METHOD: Functional near-infrared spectroscopy and multiple aspects of personality assessments [the Behavioral Approach System and the Behavioral Inhibition System (BIS) scale, and the Neuroticism-Extroversion-Openness Five-Factor Inventory scale] were applied to explor

Personality traits as an organizing framework for personality pathology.

We review evidence establishing important parallels between the general structure of psychopathology, the more specific structure of personality pathology and the structure of normal-range personality. We then present data to explicate the nature of associations between the alternative model of personality disorder (AMPD)-as operationalized by the Personality Inventory for DSM-5-and the domains and facets subsumed within the five-factor model of personality. Our data demonstrate substantial links between four of the five domains within these models but also indicate that the AMPD could be real…

Bridging eastern and western personality frameworks: a network approach integrating the Quantum-8-personality and Big Five personality traits.

BACKGROUND: The Big Five Personality (BFP) model is an established dimensional framework, whereas the Quantum-8-Personality (Q8P) model is an emerging culturally grounded framework derived from Chinese philosophical traditions. This study explored dimension-level relationships between the two frameworks. METHODS: Network analysis was conducted using data from 1,052 Chinese adults who completed the Quantum-8-Personality Scale (Q8PS) and Big Five Inventory-2 (BFI-2). RESULTS: The largest cross-framework connections involved Q8P Contradiction and BFP neuroticism, Q8P Extraversion and BFP extrav

Suicidal Ideation among University Students: A Moderated Mediation Model Considering Attachment, Personality, and Sex.

The present study aimed to examine the link between attachment, personality traits, and suicidal ideation with consideration of the potential moderating role of age and sex. The Suicidal History Self-Rating Screening Scale, the Personality Inventory for DSM-5-Brief Form, and the Attachment Style Questionnaire were administered to 183 students. There was a significant indirect effect of need for approval on suicidal ideation via detachment. Moreover, the moderated mediation models of need for approval and preoccupation with relationships on suicidality via negative affectivity were significant …

Personality, mental distress, and risk perception in subjects with multiple chemical sensitivity and toxic encephalopathy.

Personality, mental distress, and risk perception were assessed in (a) cases of multiple chemical sensitivity (MCS; n = 17), (b) chemically intolerant toxic encephalopathy cases (TE), type 2A (n = 31) and 2B (n = 26), and (c) healthy referents (n = 200). MCS cases showed elevated mental distress scores on the Depression, Interpersonal Sensitivity, Global Severity Index, and Somatization scales in the Symptom Checklist 90 (SCL-90). In the Karolinska Scales of Personality (KSP) the MCS group showed an elevation only on the Psychasthenia scale. Both TE groups showed elevations across the KSP anxi

Personality characteristics of temporomandibular disorder patients using M.M.P.I.

It is generally recognized that psychological factors play an important role in chronic orofacial pain patients. This study analysed psychological profiles of chronic pain patients affected with temporomandibular disorders (TMD), by means of the Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory (MMPI) test. Fifty consecutive TMD patients were examined and were then divided into two subgroups: 1. myofascial pain and 2. temporomandibular joint articular disorders. Sixty-two percent of the whole sample presented pathological MMPI scores. Both subgroups presented similar profiles with alteration of the …

Infidelity conduct and desire: the differentiated contribution of broad personality traits.

INTRODUCTION: Previous research linking personality to infidelity often conflates actual unfaithful conduct with the psychological desire to cheat. The present study evaluated the incremental predictive value of the Five-Factor Model (FFM) personality traits on sexual infidelity conduct and sexual infidelity desire, controlling for demographic characteristics and relationship history. METHODS: A cross-sectional design was employed with a sample of 200 adults from Ecuador, who completed the Big Five Inventory and the Infidelity Conduct Subscale. Complex brain networks mediation of neuroticism and extraversion on obsessive-compulsive disorder.

BACKGROUND: Personality traits significantly influence obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), yet their underlying neural mechanisms remain poorly defined. This study aimed to identify complex brain networks that mediate the association between personality traits and OCD, offering novel insights for personalized interventions. METHODS: We recruited 211 OCD patients who underwent clinical evaluations and rs-EEG recordings. Personality traits were measured using the Revised NEO-Five Factor Inventory, and OCD severity was assessed with the Yale-Brown Obsessive-Compulsive Scale by clinicians. Compl
