Venipuncture is generally associated with some degree of pain, discomfort, and/or apprehension. Yet most patients accept it with tolerance, even nonchalance. A few, not only pediatric patients, exhibit a higher degree of anxiety and face the procedure with tears, tension, and a variety of bargaining techniques (ie, stick on the count of 3; use only this vein). But for 1 group of people, venipuncture is associated with such fear that avoidance of the procedure is practiced. The end results are detrimental to the patient and may have an impact on society as well. These are patients the American

As a result of its location (facilitating ease of access) and its multimodal nature, the dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (dlPFC) is a commonly targeted site for transcranial electrical and magnetic stimulation in the treatment of psychiatric disorders. However, this cortical region has many interconnections throughout the brain, overlapping with other systems. One such example is the vestibular system. Starting at the vestibular organs within the inner ear, the vestibular system plays a major role in nauseogenic responses, and many vestibular disorders do not have well-documented treatment plan

BACKGROUND: Lipids are essential in cell structure and function in all parts of the body including the brain. Thus, lipids are of obvious relevance in psychiatric disorders. While the role of lipids in pathophysiological processes in cardiovascular disorders are widely known, the role of lipids in function and pathophysiology of mental processes are far less established. This study aimed to explore serum lipid levels and their association in a clinical cohort with general psychiatric symptoms.
METHODS: A transdiagnostic sample of 132 patients was recruited from a general open psychiatric ward

Eating disorder not otherwise specified (EDNOS) is the most prevalent eating disorder (ED) diagnosis. In this meta-analysis, the authors aimed to inform Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders revisions by comparing the psychopathology of EDNOS with that of the officially recognized EDs: anorexia nervosa (AN), bulimia nervosa (BN), and binge eating disorder (BED). A comprehensive literature search identified 125 eligible studies (published and unpublished) appearing in the literature from 1987 to 2007. Random effects analyses indicated that whereas EDNOS did not differ significan

Studies of early childhood traumatic experiences have clearly established a causal relationship between the experience of childhood psychic trauma and long-term effects on cognitive emotional und social development. Children exposed to chronic trauma can have difficulty regulating their emotions as well as difficulty knowing and describing their feelings. Symptom formation and psychopathology up to long-term effects on personality development result in high numbers of emotional disorders like depression, anxiety and phobic disorders and co-morbid conditions like alcohol and drug abuse and anti…

This study analyses the possible risk factors for the on-set of behavioural disorders and psychiatric disturbances in a group of 30 early-treated congenital hypothyroidism (CH) subjects (12 children and 18 adolescents) compared with a control group of 116 age-matched normal subjects (58 children and 58 adolescents). The study also allowed us to evaluate the possible age at onset of behavioural disorders. Both the sample's and the controls' behaviours were assessed using a specific diagnostic instrument: Achenbach's and Edelbrock's Child Behaviour Checklist (CBCL). A clinical structured intervi

Social phobia has been recognized only recently as a clinical entity, and there is considerable overlap in diagnosis between agoraphobia, panic disorder, stress disorder and avoidant (anxious) personality disorder. In more severe cases there may also be some difficulty in differentiating the condition from schizophrenia. In reaching a correct diagnosis of social phobia it appears that the two essential elements of a phobic diagnosis, situational fear and avoidance, should be present prominently and that a distinction from agoraphobia can be made by paying close attention to the nature of the s

This study's aim was to prospectively examine and identify a model of demographic, clinical, and attitudinal variables that impact improvement among patients with panic disorder. Subjects were 232 primary care patients meeting criteria for DSM-IV panic disorder. Eligible patients were randomly assigned to a collaborative care intervention or to treatment as usual. Assessments occurred at 3-month intervals during the course of 1 year. In final multivariate logistic regression models, patients with higher anxiety sensitivity and higher neuroticism scores at baseline were less likely to show clin

BACKGROUND: Since 1988, the psychiatric outpatient clinic at Kongsberg Hospital has carried out group treatment for patients with anxiety disorders. This study assesses the effect of this treatment.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: Nineteen of a total of 27 patients were included in the study. Diagnostic criteria were agoraphobia with or without panic disorder. The length of treatment was three months. Methods used were cognitive behavioural therapy, physiotherapy and group therapy. Ratings of the patients' symptoms were made before treatment, at termination of treatment and one to three years after. Th

BACKGROUND: Dizziness and vertigo can be a complaint in various psychiatric conditions where it usually constitutes only one of the features of the syndrome. Lately, a somatoform disorder characterized by almost mono-symptomatic dizziness and unsteadiness has been described. Since phobic postural vertigo usually presents without anxiety or other psychological symptomatology, patients with this condition seek help at neurologic and otolaryngologic clinics where they are often misdiagnosed as suffering from organic vertigo.
OBJECTIVES: To present the clinical features of 55 consecutive patients

Mood disorders are characterized as the diseases of the 1980s, and anxiety disorders as the diseases of the 1990s. Of the anxiety disorders, social phobia is the least studied and most misunderstood. Recently, however, social phobia has been the focus of intense clinical investigation, and an increasingly clearer picture is emerging. The National Comorbidity Survey (NCS) data reveal a lifetime prevalence for social phobia of 13.3% in the adult population (15 to 54 years). First onset is early in life, usually before age 18, and the clinical course is chronic and unremitting. The central clinic

INTRODUCTION: Functional dizziness comprises a class of dizziness disorders, including phobic postural vertigo (PPV), that cause vestibular symptoms in the absence of a structural organic origin. For this reason, functional brain mechanisms have been implicated in these disorders.
METHODS: Here, functional network organization was investigated in 17 PPV patients and 18 healthy controls (HCs) during functional magnetic resonance imaging with a visual motion stimulus, data initially collected and described by Popp et al. (2018). Graph theoretical measures (degree centrality [DC], clustering coe

BACKGROUND: No studies have been found that compared the psychopathology features, including personality disorders, of Panic Disorder (PD) and Panic Disorder with Agoraphobia (PDA), and a nonclinical sample with anxiety vulnerability.
METHOD: The total sample included 152 participants, 52 in the PD/PDA, 45 in the high anxiety sensitivity (AS) sample, and 55 in the nonclinical sample. The participants in PD/PDA sample were evaluated with the structured interview ADIS-IV. The Brief Symptom Inventory and the MCMI-III were used in all three samples.
RESULTS: Statistically significant differences

Psychophysiological response to fear memory imagery was assessed in specific phobia, social anxiety disorder, panic disorder with agoraphobia, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), and healthy controls. Heart rate, skin conductance, and corrugator muscle were recorded as participants responded to tone cues signaling previously memorized descriptor sentences. Image contents included personal fears, social fears, fears of physical danger, and neutral (low arousal) scenes. Reactions to acoustic startle probes (eyeblink) were assessed during recall imagery and nonsignal periods. Participants were

The preclinical neuroscience course is widely regarded as one of the most conceptually challenging components of medical education and is often associated with the emergence of "neurophobia." Rather than continuing to focus solely on reducing fear, it is time to cultivate "neuro-curiosity" a mindset of inquiry, relevance, and connection. Grounded in self-determination theory, which emphasizes autonomy, competence, and relatedness as drivers of intrinsic motivation, this review outlines four core pillars for curriculum reform: clinical relevance, neuroanatomy through imaging, case-based learnin

Fear can be defined as the internal neurological state that releases a repertoire of behaviours an animal performs to reduce the effect of an aversive factor. Neophobia, the fear of novelty, is a fundamental behavioural trait observed across a wide range of species from arthropods to humans. It has been extensively studied by ecologists and psychologists for decades. However, despite its roots in fear, there is a surprising lack of connection between the literature on neophobia and the rich body of research on the neurology of fear. Fear has been studied at the hormonal, network, and cellular

Neurophobia, commonly manifested as fear, anxiety, avoidance, and low confidence toward neuroscience and neurology, has emerged as a persistent challenge in health professions education with implications for learning outcomes, clinical competence, and workforce sustainability. Although the phenomenon has been widely documented across medical and allied health disciplines, existing research remains fragmented in terms of conceptualization, measurement, and intervention focus. To address this gap, the present study provides the first comprehensive bibliometric science-mapping synthesis of neurop

INTRODUCTION: New technologies are crucial in empowering seniors to overcome disabilities. However, there is a prevalent fear of technology among many older adults, known as technophobia. Understanding the barriers that hinder older adults from embracing new technology can significantly improve their overall health and well-being. Therefore, this systematic review aimed to explore existing studies on technophobia and computer anxiety among older adults to identify effective factors contributing to technophobia.
METHODS: A literature review was conducted following the Preferred Reporting Items
