There are some patients that, despite their continued use of optimized topical and systemic medication and skin care regimens, exhibit at least partial persistence of acne vulgaris (AV) lesions that is bothersome and treatment-resistant to pharmacologic approaches. Additionally, professional, public and governmental concern regarding "antibiotic resistance" has led to interest in therapeutic alternatives other than antibiotics. These challenges drive research into non-pharmacologic approaches to AV treatment, including laser and light-based approaches.

We present a review of six clinical studies investigating the use of photodynamic therapy (PDT) using porphyrin precursors for the treatment of Old World cutaneous leishmaniasis (CL). Thirty-nine patients with a total of 77 lesions received PDT using a range of treatment schedules following topical application of aminolevulinic acid (ALA) or methyl-aminolevulinate (MAL). Current topical and most oral therapies for acne vulgaris have limited efficacy, especially in moderate to severe cases. Photodynamic therapy with 5-aminolevulinic acid and recently methyl aminolevulinate has been shown to be a safe and effective modality for the treatment of acne vulgaris. Consensus guidelines suggest that 30 to 60 minutes is sufficient 5-aminolevulinic acid contact time before photoactivation with blue light, red light, yellow light, broadband light, halogen, or pulsed dye laser devices. An average of three treatment can yield significant long-term improvement.

BACKGROUND: Acquired airway stenosis in childhood is resistant to conventional treatment. We examined whether endoscope-assisted photodynamic therapy (PDT) is effective for airway stenosis in animal models of which the pathophysiologic progressions are similar to those of clinical cases showing rapid deterioration.

BACKGROUND: Endometrial ablation by means of photodynamic therapy is currently being evaluated as an outpatient treatment for dysfunctional uterine bleeding. Photodynamic therapy requires the activation of a photosensitizer by laser light. We describe a new device specifically designed to provide light delivery to the uterus for endometrial photodynamic therapy.
