Role of herbicides in the decline of butterfly population and diversity.

The herbicides not only produce a lethal effect on herbs but also indirectly harm those species which use herbs as host plants during their life cycle. The adverse effect of herbicide is comparatively more than any insecticide found in the agricultural industry. Herbicides act as enzyme inhibitors that block the synthesis of essential biomolecules in herbs. Action mechanisms in which herbicides act on the plant body as well as the classification of the herbicides according to their mode of action have been recorded. Lethal effects of herbicides cause qualitative and quantitative losses of herb

Pesticide residues in honey bee (Apis mellifera) pollen collected in two ornamental plant nurseries in Connecticut: Implications for bee health and risk assessment.

Honey bees (Apis mellifera L.) are one of the most important managed pollinators of agricultural crops. While potential effects of agricultural pesticides on honey bee health have been investigated in some settings, risks to honey bees associated with exposures occurring in the plant nursery setting have received little attention. We sought to identify and quantify pesticide levels present in honey bee-collected pollen harvested in two ornamental plant nurseries (i.e., Nursery A and Nursery B) in Connecticut. From June to September 2018, pollen was collected weekly from 8 colonies using bottom

How do honeybees use their magnetic compass? Can they see the North?

While seeking food sources and routes back to their hive, bees make use of their advanced nervous and sensory capacities, which underlie a diverse behavioral repertoire. One of several honeybee senses that is both exceptional and intriguing is magnetoreception - the ability to perceive the omnipresent magnetic field (MF) of the Earth. The mechanism by which animals sense MFs has remained fascinating as well as elusive because of the intricacies involved, which makes it one of the grand challenges for neural and sensory biology. However, investigations in recent years have brought substantial p

A Rudimentary labellar speculum in Cymbidium lowianum (Rchb.f.) Rchb.f. and Cymbidium devonianum Paxton (Orchidaceae).

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: The labellar 'hairs' of some Cymbidium spp. are said to be thin-walled and to contain 'plasma', oil and sugars and it has long been speculated that they may function as food-hairs. However, the present authors' preliminary studies showed that certain atypical papillae may have a different role and, by reflecting light, function as a speculum. The purpose of the paper is to test this hypothesis. METHODS: Light microscopy, scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, histochemistry and ultraviolet photography were used to investigate the structure, food c

Overcoming serious incompatibilities resulting from intergeneric hybridisation between Diplotaxis tenuifolia and Brassica oleracea to develop CMS wall-rocket.

Alloplasmic male-sterile breeding lines of Diplotaxis tenuifolia were developed by intergeneric hybridisation between cytoplasmic male-sterile cauliflower (Brassica oleracea L.) and perennial wall-rocket. Amphidiploid filial generation (F1) plants (2n = 2x = 20, CD) were obtained by manual crosses and ovary culture. The phenotype of the hybrids was mostly similar to that of the wall-rocket parent. The plants were male-sterile, but absolutely no seed set was achieved after pollination with D. tenuifolia. Amphitetraploid F1 hybrid plants (4n = 4x = 40, CCDD) obtained by colchicine treatment were…

Cytological characteristics of blueberry fruit development.

Using the blueberry cultivar "Powderblue" after pollination, fruits at different developmental stages were collected for study. The transverse and longitudinal diameters, individual fruit weight, and fruit water content were measured during their development. Employing tissue sectioning and microscopy techniques, we systematically studied the morphological features and anatomical structures of the fruits and seeds at various developmental stages, aiming to elucidate the cytological patterns during blueberry fruit development. The results of our study revealed that the "Powderblue" blueberry fr…

Following the COVID-19 playbook and battling another infodemic: conspiracy beliefs around human monkeypox among the Lebanese population.

INTRODUCTION: The non-endemic multicountry outbreak of monkeypox (MPX) has emphasized the issue of conspiracy theories that go viral in times of societal crisis. Now, it is the turn of MPX to join COVID-19 in the conspiracy theory realm. Social media outlets were flooded by a scourge of misinformation as soon as MPX cases began to appear with an evident cross-pollination between diverse conspiracy theories. Given the adverse consequences of conspiracy beliefs, this study aimed to assess the extent of endorsement of MPX conspiracy beliefs among the Lebanese population and to identify its associ…

Gibberellins and parthenocarpic ability in developing ovaries of seedless mandarins.

Satsuma (Citrus unshiu [Mak] Marc.) and Clementine (Citrus reticulata [Hort.] Ex. Tanaka, cv Oroval) are two species of seedless mandarins differing in their tendency to develop parthenocarpic fruits. Satsuma is a male-sterile cultivar that shows a high degree of natural parthenocarpy and a high fruit set. Seedless Clementine varieties are self-incompatible, and in the absence of cross-pollination show a very low ability to set fruit. The gibberellins (GAs) GA53, putative 17-OH-GA(53), GA(44), GA(17), GA(19), GA(20), GA(29), GA(1), 3-epi-GA(1), GA(8), GA(24), GA(9), and GA(4) have been identif…

Multi-tiered analyses of honey bees that resist or succumb to parasitic mites and viruses.

BACKGROUND: Varroa destructor mites, and the numerous viruses they vector to their honey bee hosts, are among the most serious threats to honey bee populations, causing mortality and morbidity to both the individual honey bee and colony, the negative effects of which convey to the pollination services provided by honey bees worldwide. Here we use a combination of targeted assays and deep RNA sequencing to determine host and microbial changes in resistant and susceptible honey bee lineages. We focus on three study sets. The first involves field sampling of sympatric western bees, some derived f…

Complex multitrophic species interactions and fitness costs: Intricate consequences of jasmonate and salicylate induced plant defences.

Induced plant defences regulated by jasmonic acid (JA) and salicylic acid (SA) initiate a cascade of effects, from defence expression to changes in arthropod community structure and species interactions that can ultimately influence plant fitness. Yet the long-term consequences of these processes remain poorly understood, particularly in perennial tropical systems. We investigated how activation of JA and SA signalling pathways shapes arthropod community composition and plant reproductive success in Trichogoniopsis adenantha (Asteraceae), a glandular trichome-bearing shrub native to the Brazil

Development of multiple disease resistant rice variety through marker assisted selection.

The increasing reliance on pesticides to manage major rice diseases has raised concerns about resistance development. To address this, the present study aimed to genetically improve the widely cultivated mega variety BRRI dhan29, which already carries the tungro resistance gene tsv1, by pyramiding multiple disease resistance genes. Unlike previous pyramiding studies, this work integrates resistance to three major rice diseases blast, bacterial blight, and tungro into a single mega-variety under Bangladesh-specific agro-ecological conditions. The blast resistance genes Pi9 and Pb1 and bacterial

Olfactory Information Transfer in Bumblebees and Its Variation According to the Food Resource.

Within the framework of animal learning theory, information transfer refers to the generalization or transmission of acquired knowledge to novel situations, individuals, or environments. In pollinators, this process is critical for adaptive foraging and ecological success. Although olfactory information transfer has been demonstrated in bumblebees through classical conditioning or colony exposure, the influence of reward type (nectar vs. pollen) remains poorly understood. Here, we evaluated olfactory information transfer and decision-making in the South American bumblebee Bombus pauloensis usi
