The articular surfaces of 10 retrieved ultrahigh molecular weight polyethylene acetabular sockets were studied by optical microscopy, X-ray fluorescence spectrometry, multiple internal reflectance FTIR spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy, and wavelength dispersive X-ray microanalysis. BACKGROUND: Severe hemodilution in large mammals has been used rigorously for the safety and efficacy testing of hemoglobin-based red blood cell substitutes. The effects of hemodilution with polyethylene glycol-modified bovine hemoglobin (PEG-Hb) were investigated in an unanesthetized porcine model.
METHODS: Immature Yorkshire cross barrow pigs were subjected to exchange transfusion with PEG-Hb (n = 6) or dextran 70 (n = 4) until an 80% reduction in hematocrit was achieved.
RESULTS: All six (100%) PEG-Hb-infused pigs and only one (25%) dextran 70 control pig survived the resultant reduction

The wear of polyethylene components of total hip replacements has previously been studied radiographically and by analysis of retrieved components. The extent of wear, however, has largely been determined from components retrieved at reoperation and has therefore been based on a subset of patients in whom the prosthesis is more likely to show excessive wear. Polyethylene glycol (PEG) was used to isolate immune complexes from sera. Complexes were then quantified and partially characterized by a variety of immunological techniques. Complexes were detected in rheumatoid arthritis (RA), systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE), Felty's syndrome and vasculitis, but not in polymyositis, scleroderma or Behçets syndrome. The search for circulating immune complexes (IC) by precipitation tests using polyethylene glycole was performed in a large series of normal (150 subjects) and 1200 pathological sera (over 800 patients).
