OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to highlight the critical role that MRI may play in diagnosing unsuspected lower extremity deep venous thrombosis and to stress the importance of scrutinizing MRI studies of the lower extremity showing apparently non-specific muscle edema for any evidence of intramuscular venous thrombosis.
DESIGN AND PATIENTS: The imaging studies of four patients in whom deep venous thrombosis was unsuspected on clinical grounds, and first diagnosed on the basis of MRI findings, were reviewed by two musculoskeletal radiologists in consensus. In all four patients the i

OBJECTIVE: To determine the effect on pain, function, and ultrasonographic findings of ultrasonography-guided Baker's cyst aspiration followed by corticosteroid injection in a group of patients with Baker's cyst secondary to knee osteoarthritis.
DESIGN: Prospective observational study.
RESULTS: Twenty-six subjects participated in this study. Clinical and instrumental evaluations were performed at baseline (T0), 1 wk (T1), and 4 wks (T2) after procedure. Mean Visual Analog Scale scores significantly dropped after the procedure (T0 = 6.2 [1.2]; T1 = 4.48 [1.5]; T2 = 4.32 [1.3]; T0 vs. T1 and P

Ultrasonography (US) of the knee in gonarthritis was evaluated with gadolinium-DTPA-enhanced MR imaging as a reference. The study included 13 patients with gonarthritis, 2 patients with osteoarthritis and 5 healthy controls. Compared to MR, US identified 100% (12/12) of joint effusions, 100% (5/5) of Baker's cysts, 57% (8/14) of the synovial membranes of the suprapatellar recess and 38% (3/8) of bone erosions. No MR or clinical findings characterized the patients with ultrasonographically identifiable synovial membranes. Quantitative MR- and US-estimates of effusion, synovial membrane and cart

Pain and other disorders of the knee are a common presenting complaint in the ambulatory setting. Although the cornerstones of imaging evaluation of the knee are radiographs and magnetic resonance (MR) imaging, ultrasonography (US) is less expensive than MR imaging, easily available, and of comparable accuracy in the evaluation of certain pathologic conditions of the knee. The benefits of US include portability, low cost, high spatial resolution, dynamic imaging, and ability to guide percutaneous interventions when indicated. US also allows direct patient contact, facilitating immediate clinic

The purpose of this study was to know the pathology associated with Baker's cyst (BC) in a rheumatology clinic and to evaluate the incidence, characteristics, and complications of BC. We reviewed the rheumatology ultrasound laboratory charts of patients with BC from Oct 2006 through Dec 2008. Demographic and disease data were also collected. Of the 1,120 patients who underwent ultrasound studies, 145 (12.9%) were found to have 180 BCs. The associated diseases were as follows: 91 (50.6%) osteoarthritis (OA) of the knee, 37 (20.6%) rheumatoid arthritis (RA), 25 (13.9%) gout, 14 (7.8%) seronegati

Differential diagnosis in angiographically found popliteal artery stenosis or occlusion comprises some distinct and clinically important entities that should be considered as management and prognosis may vary considerably. We present two patients with the final diagnosis of cystic adventitial disease of the popliteal artery and popliteal artery entrapment syndrome. Angiographic findings and the value of additional diagnostic imaging are discussed.

PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to investigate whether Baker cyst (BC) was related to the specific arrangement of the medial head of gastrocnemius tendon (MHGT) and the semimembranosus tendon (SMT).
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Patients who underwent knee MRI with "Baker cyst" in PACS from August 2017 to February 2018 were included in this study. Patients who did not have BC in a knee MRI performed during the same period were included in the control group. A total 210 patients were selected for inclusion in this study. For the imaging analysis, the arrangement pattern between MHGT and SMT wa

This study aimed to determine the ultrasonographic prevalence of Baker's cysts in knees with chronic osteoarthritic pain and investigate for cysts correlates and relationships with scintigraphically established synovitis. Consecutive patients with chronic osteoarthritic knee pain underwent clinical examination, X-rays, ultrasonography and early-phase bone scintigraphy. Eighty-nine Baker's cysts were detected in 328 knees with chronic osteoarthritic pain (27%), whereas one cyst was identified among the 54 non-osteoarthritic knees (2%, P<0.001). Baker's cysts were detected in 72/195 (37%) patien

84 knee joints were examined by a 3-dimensional MR method and the results correlated with subsequent arthroscopy. The findings showed good demonstration of the normal anatomical structures and excellent reliability for the diagnosis of meniscus tears (sensitivity 91%, specificity 95%), cruciate ligament lesions (sensitivity 90%, specificity 99%) and serious cartilage damage (sensitivity 100%, specificity 100%). Demonstration of mild cartilage damage (sensitivity 60%, specificity 99%) was better than with a spin echo technique but is not yet optimal. It is concluded that, by using a 3-dimension

BACKGROUND: Although Baker's cysts are commonly associated with meniscal tears, the role of specific tear morphologies and anatomic locations in cyst presence remains unclear. This study aimed to evaluate the associations between meniscal tear patterns, tear locations, and Baker's cysts and to explore whether these tear characteristics were also associated with concomitant chondral lesions.
METHODS: In this retrospective cohort study, patients who underwent knee arthroscopy at a single institution were evaluated and categorized according to the presence or absence of a Baker's cyst on MRI. Ar

OBJECTIVE: Several symptoms are common to knee osteoarthritis and Baker's cyst. To what extent each condition contributes to the patient's discomfort is still a matter of debate. The aim of the present study was twofold: first, to compare the burden of symptoms in patients with isolated knee osteoarthritis and patients with knee osteoarthritis associated with Baker's cyst; second, to assess the outcomes after conservative treatments.
SUBJECT AND METHODS: Patients suffering from monolateral idiopathic knee osteoarthritis were enrolled. Demographic, anthropometric and clinical data (KOOS scale)
