PURPOSE: Clinical examination of the optic disc is an essential element in the assessment of its health. Previous work has described normal optic disc appearance among different races. No such description of optic discs exists for indigenous Australians, who are at low risk of developing glaucoma. This study was designed to evaluate optic disc parameters of indigenous Australians.
METHODS: A sample of 208 indigenous Australians were recruited as they presented to remote clinics in Central Australia. Each subject underwent optic disc photography using a Topcon TRC-NW100 digital fundus camera.

AIM: To observe the differences between ethnic groups and the autochthonous population in the frequency of mental disorders. To study epidemiological data and the accuracy of recording of such data.
DESIGN: Descriptive study. Setting. Raval Sud Basic Health Care Area. Drassanes Primary Health Care Center, Barcelona, Spain.
PATIENTS: A random sample of 112 immigrant patients belonging to ethnic minorities, seen between January 1995 and December 1997, matched for age and sex with autochthonous patients. Interventions. We studied variables related with mental disorders in immigrants. Variables

This report presents a historical perspective of work done in the U.S. on the metabolism of radionuclides by animals. Also covered are the important concepts of interspecies metabolic correlations and means of accelerating turnover of internally deposited radionuclides. Although a large amount of data exist for a large number of radionuclides and animal species there are many parameters of interest and additional data is needed. Also, much of the data are in internal reports that are not easily accessible. In-depth reviews of work done in the U.S. are not available. If I were asked for recomme

By means of serial sections at equal intervals through the brains of 8 Norway rats and 8 laboratory rats the fresh volume sizes of the optic regions lateral geniculate nucleus (pars dorsalis), striate area, superior colliculus and tractus opticus were determined. Furthermore the sizes of neocortical white matter and grey matter were measured in the same way. On the basis of the intraspecific allometric relation between brain size and body size differences in size of the structures between wild and domestic animals could be established. Especially the subcortical terminal regions of visual inpu

BACKGROUND: Elevated tuberculosis (TB) incidence rates have recently been reported for racial/ethnic minority populations in the United States. Tracking such disparities is important for assessing progress toward national health equity goals and implementing change.
OBJECTIVE: To quantify trends in racial/ethnic disparities in TB incidence among U.S.-born persons.
DESIGN: Time-series analysis of national TB registry data for 2011 to 2021.
SETTING: United States.
PARTICIPANTS: U.S.-born persons stratified by race/ethnicity.
MEASUREMENTS: TB incidence rates, incidence rate differences, and

BACKGROUND: The COVID-19 pandemic exposed the health equity gap between and within countries. Western countries were the first to receive vaccines and mortality was higher among socially deprived, minority and indigenous populations. Surprisingly, many sub-Saharan countries reported low excess mortalities. These countries share experiences with community organization and participation in health. The aim of this article was to analyse if and how this central role of people can promote a successful pandemic response.
METHODS: This analysis was partly based on local and national experiences shar

BACKGROUND: Current literature has established that adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) are associated with the onset of a variety of physical, mental, and behavioural illnesses. However, there are few studies that have thoroughly examined this association in low-income or marginalized groups.
METHODS: To address this knowledge gap, this study used self-reported data on childhood experiences and adult health outcomes in a sample of 91 Indigenous persons experiencing homelessness. While the primary focus of the study was to assess the relationship between ACEs and health status, we also asses

Sexual and gender minority youth (SGMY) experience unique challenges related to identity and disclosure, and cope in vibrant ways. Qualitative research has not yet fulsomely explored the risk, resilience, and identity intersections that impact vulnerable SGMY wellbeing. Methods: This digital photo-elicitation study (QueerView) recruited thirty SGMY (aged 14-29) from priority populations that had one or more of the following experiences: trans and gender diverse, homelessness, child welfare, and immigration. From submission of fifteen photos representing resilience and a semi-structured interv

Otitis media is the second most common infection in children and the leading cause for seeking medical advice. Indigenous populations such as the Inuits, indigenous Australians and American Indians have a very high prevalence of otitis media and are considered to be high-risk populations. Streptococcus pneumoniae, one of the three main bacterial causes of otitis media, colonises the nasopharynx prior to disease development. In high-risk populations, early acquisition of high bacterial loads increases the prevalence of otitis media. In these settings, current treatment strategies are insufficie

The meaningful consideration of cultural practices, values and beliefs is a necessary component in the effective translation of advancements in neuroscience to clinical practice and public discourse. Society's immense investment in biomedical science and technology, in conjunction with an increasingly diverse socio-cultural landscape, necessitates the study of how potential discoveries in neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer disease are perceived and utilized across cultures. Building on the work of neuroscientists, ethicists and philosophers, we argue that the growing field of neuroet

Knowledge of the degree to which various subsets of morphological data reflect molecular relationships is crucial for studies attempting to estimate genetic relationships from patterns of morphological variation. This study assessed the phylogenetic utility of six different human cranial regions, plus the entire cranium. Three-dimensional landmark data were collected for 83 landmarks from samples of skulls from 14 modern human populations. The data were subsequently divided into anatomical regions: basicranium, upper face, mandible, temporal bone, upper jaw, cranial vault, and a subset of poin

Sera of 128 small wild mammals (rodents, insectivora) trapped in Northern Morocco in March 1979, were studied for antibody against 15 arboviruses. In inhibition-haemagglutination tests, positive reactions were found against West Nile (0.8%), Tahyna (21 %), Arumowot (14 %) and Sicilian Sandfly fever (9.4 %) viruses. In complement fixation tests, an unique serum from Apodemus sylvaticus was simultaneously positive for Quaranfil virus and for a Kemerovo group virus, Brest/Ar/T222, previously isolated from Ornithodoros (A.) maritimus ticks caught in Morocco. These results are discussed according t
