Evaluation of an action research project in ophthalmic nursing practice.

AIM: This paper reports the evaluation phase of an action research project that promoted face-down posturing of patients following vitreo-retinal surgery for macular hole to enhance patient outcomes. The evaluation phase identified areas of practice needing further development from the perspectives of those involved with the care of patients. BACKGROUND: To achieve best results following surgical repair of macular hole, patients are required to posture face down for several weeks. As a consequence, patients complain of severe back and neck ache and find it difficult to persist with the postur

Psychological consequences of female genital mutilation: A mixed-method systematic review.

BACKGROUND: Female genital mutilation (FGM/C) defined as 'all procedures that involve partial or total removal of the external female genitalia, or other injury to the female genital organs for non-medical reasons' is a cultural practice having several consequences on women's health. Medical and sexual consequences have been documented, but the link between FGM/C and the development of psychological symptoms is not clearly established. The influence of contextual factors is poorly understood. OBJECTIVES: To evaluate the psychological impact of FGM/C and how victims experience it. METHOD: A m

Validation of a Spanish version of the psychological inflexibility in pain scale (PIPS) and an evaluation of its relation with acceptance of pain and mindfulness in sample of persons with fibromyalgia.

BACKGROUND: Psychological flexibility has been suggested as a fundamental process in health. The Psychological Inflexibility in Pain Scale (PIPS) is one of the scales employed for assessing psychological inflexibility in pain patients. The aim of this study was to validate the Spanish version of the PIPS and secondly, to compare it to two other psychological constructs, the acceptance of pain and mindfulness scales. METHODS: The PIPS was translated into Spanish by two bilingual linguistic experts, and then, back-translated into English to assess for equivalence. The final Spanish version was

Gradual training reduces practice difficulty while preserving motor learning of a novel locomotor task.

Motor learning strategies that increase practice difficulty and the size of movement errors are thought to facilitate motor learning. In contrast to this, gradual training minimizes movement errors and reduces practice difficulty by incrementally introducing task requirements, yet remains as effective as sudden training and its large movement errors for learning novel reaching tasks. While attractive as a locomotor rehabilitation strategy, it remains unknown whether the efficacy of gradual training extends to learning locomotor tasks and their unique requirements. The influence of gradual vs.

Improvement of arm movement patterns and endpoint control depends on type of feedback during practice in stroke survivors.

BACKGROUND: A major challenge in stroke rehabilitation is restoration of arm motor function. Therapy-induced improvements in arm function may occur via restoration of premorbid movement patterns (recovery) or development of compensatory movement strategies. However, it is unclear whether the learning benefits of practice might be enhanced by incorporating different forms of feedback, focusing on movement outcomes or on specific arm movement patterns. OBJECTIVE: To determine if manipulation of attentional focus by providing either knowledge of results (KR) feedback, focusing on movement outcom

Sexuality and multiple sclerosis.

The individual with multiple sclerosis (MS) experiences a severe alteration in lifestyle both physiologically and emotionally. Sexuality is an integral part of life. However, discussion of alterations in sexuality by health care workers has traditionally been viewed as taboo. Specifically, the sexual concerns in chronic debilitating disorders such as MS have been neglected. This paper will explore physical and psychological aspects of MS on a patient's sexuality. Implications for nursing practice will also be considered.

Ritualized embodiment and moral self-cultivation: a Confucian model of psychological transformation.

This article develops a cross-cultural theoretical model of moral-psychological transformation by reinterpreting Confucian self-cultivation as a system of ritualized embodiment. Situated within theoretical and philosophical psychology, the article asks how bodily discipline, ritual form, and culturally mediated repetition may reorganize attention, affect, conduct, habit, and moral agency. Drawing on embodied cognition, moral psychology, ritual theory, cultural psychology, and Confucian philosophical discourse, the study proposes the Confucian Embodied Self-Cultivation Model. The model is groun

COVID-19 Exposure Risk, Burnout, and Shifts in Family Medicine Faculty's Efforts: A National Survey.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: In response to the COVID-19 pandemic, academic family physicians had to change their clinical, teaching, research, and administrative efforts, while simultaneously balancing their home environment demands. It is unclear how the changes in effort affected physicians' personal well-being, particularly burnout. This study sought to identify changes in faculty's clinical, teaching, research, and administrative efforts during the COVID-19 pandemic and how effort shifts were associated with burnout. We also examined associations with important demographics and burnout. ME

Case series utilizing exposure, relaxation, and rescripting therapy: impact on nightmares, sleep quality, and psychological distress.

Experiencing a traumatic event may initiate or exacerbate the occurrence of nightmares. Nightmares may impact sleep quality and quantity, posttraumatic stress symptoms, and depression. Recently, imagery rehearsal has gained attention in the treatment of trauma-related nightmares and is reported to be promising in the reduction of nightmares. On the basis of the vast literature describing the therapeutic benefits of exposure techniques for anxiety-related problems, the treatment was modified to enhance the exposure component. This article presents a case series using this modified version of im

Based on the relationship between anxiety of existential meaninglessness, hope level, and fear of progression, explored the effect of preoperative nursing with Orem theory in the senile cataract population.

BACKGROUND: Cataracts, characterized by a decrease in vision due to the clouding of the lens, can progress to blindness in advanced stages. The rising incidence of cataract cases has led to a significant number of patients experiencing negative emotions associated with vision loss, thereby diminishing their quality of life. In clinical practice, it is imperative for healthcare professionals to consider the psychological well-being of cataract patients. Currently, there is a scarcity of research focusing on psychological evaluations, such as assessing feelings of meaninglessness among individua

Associations Between Personality Disorder Characteristics, Psychological Symptoms, and Sexual Functioning in Young Women.

BACKGROUND: Recently, the etiology of sexual dysfunctions in women has been approached from different angles. In clinical practice and in previous studies, it has been observed that women with sexual problems experience anxiety problems and express more rigid and perfectionistic personality traits than women without these problems. AIM: To investigate whether personality disorder characteristics according to the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, 4th Edition, Text Revision (DSM-IV-TR) and psychological symptoms are associated with sexual problems in women. METHODS: 188 wo

Psychological distress in early childhood and the risk of adolescent spinal pain with impact.

BACKGROUND: Spinal pain (SP), including neck and back pain, is common and often associated with poor mental health and reduced quality of life of adolescents. Contemporary understanding of SP favours a biopsychosocial approach, and emerging evidence suggests the stronger influence of psychological rather than other factors. OBJECTIVES: We aimed to investigate if experiencing psychological distress in early childhood increases the risk of spinal pain with impact during adolescence. METHODS: 1175 adolescents from a prospective cohort study (Raine Study Gen2) were included. Psychological distre

AGA Clinical Practice Update on Evaluation and Management of Belching, Abdominal Bloating, and Distention: Expert Review.

DESCRIPTION: Belching, bloating, and abdominal distention are all highly prevalent gastrointestinal symptoms and account for some of the most common reasons for patient visits to outpatient gastroenterology practices. These symptoms are often debilitating, affecting patients' quality of life, and contributing to work absenteeism. Belching and bloating differ in their pathophysiology, diagnosis, and management, and there is limited evidence available for their various treatments. Therefore, the purpose of this American Gastroenterological Association (AGA) Clinical Practice Update is to provide

Dark Tourists: Profile, Practices, Motivations and Wellbeing.

This work aims to address whether knowing what dark tourism is (or not) impacts rumination on sadness, self-hatred, hostility, psychological vulnerability, and tourist wellbeing, as well as practices and motivations for dark tourism. A quantitative approach, based on a survey of 993 respondents, reveals that women and more educated participants know more about dark tourism; people who know what dark tourism is have visited more Holocaust museums, sites of human tragedy and natural disasters, concentration camps, and prisons; show more curiosity, need to learn and understand, and need to see mo

The algorithmic management paradox: a structured integrative review of perceived autonomy on performance in digital workplaces.

Digital workplaces increasingly delegate managerial functions such as task allocation, scheduling, monitoring, evaluation, feedback, and sanctioning to software systems. These systems can improve coordination speed, scalability, and consistency, but they also redistribute worker discretion in uneven ways. This article examines that tension as an algorithmic management autonomy paradox. Rather than asking whether algorithmic management is simply empowering or controlling, the review asks which facet of autonomy is affected, through which psychological mechanism, and with what consequences for d

Breastfeeding self-efficacy in Italian mothers: the role of attachment, parental stress, and feeding practices.

BACKGROUND: Breastfeeding self-efficacy, defined as a mother’s confidence in her ability to breastfeed, is a central psychological determinant of breastfeeding initiation, duration, and exclusivity. Although widely studied, fewer investigations have examined breastfeeding self-efficacy within an integrated framework that simultaneously considers contextual, experiential, and psychological factors. The present study aimed to identify the main predictors of breastfeeding self-efficacy in a large sample of Italian mothers. METHODS: This cross-sectional study included 500 Italian mothers who were
