This review examines a prevalent condition with multifaceted etiology encompassing genetic, environmental, and oral behavioral factors. It stands as a significant ailment impacting oral functionality, aesthetics, and quality of life. Longitudinal studies indicate that malocclusion in primary dentition may progress to permanent malocclusion. Recognizing and managing malocclusion in primary dentition is gaining prominence. The World Health Organization ranks malocclusions as the third most widespread oral health issue globally. Angle's classification system is widely used to categorize malocclus

OBJECTIVES: The role of tongue reduction surgery (TRS) in preventing excessive mandibular growth and anterior open bite in children with Beckwith-Wiedemann Spectrum (BWSp) is still controversial. This cross-sectional study aimed at comparing craniofacial growth pattern in children affected by BWSp either treated or not treated with early TRS for severe macroglossia. Considering the invasive nature of such surgery, the present study could help in clarifying the need for TRS to reduce or prevent growth disturbances.

OBJECTIVES: Contemporary biometric technologies have been gaining traction in both public and private security sectors. Facial recognition is the most commonly used biometric technology for this purpose. We aimed to evaluate the ability of a publicly available facial recognition application program interface to calculate similarity scores of presurgical and postsurgical photographs of patients who had orthognathic surgery.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Presurgical and postsurgical photographs of 75 patients who had orthognathic surgery between January 2018 and November 2020 in our department were us

BACKGROUND: Three-dimensional surgical planning for orthognathic surgery is becoming prevalent, with improving outcomes. However, conventional dental casts are still used for evaluations, digital image conversion, surgical planning, and occlusal splint production. This study used intraoral scanning for the three-dimensional planning of the final digital occlusion and compared this method with the conventional dental cast approach.
METHODS: Thirty consecutive patients who underwent two-jaw orthognathic surgery to treat mandibular prognathism and asymmetry were included. Dental casts (control g

BACKGROUND: This study investigates the differences in the lateral profile and frontal appearance after sagittal split ramus osteotomy (SSRO) and intraoral vertical ramus osteotomy (IVRO) procedures for the correction of mandibular prognathism.
METHODS: Sixty patients (30 SSRO and 30 IVRO) underwent mandibular setback surgery. Serial cephalograms were obtained: (1) T1: approximately 1 month before surgery; (2) T2: at least 6 months after surgery for SSRO and at least 1 year after surgery for IVRO. The landmarks, linear distances, and related angles were measured. The t-test was applied to the

The nasopharynx is a centrally located but understudied upper respiratory tract component. This study tested hypotheses related to the functional integration of the nasopharyngeal boundaries with the facial skeleton and external basicranium over the course of development in humans and nonhuman hominoids. It was hypothesized that facial morphology (width, length, and kyphosis) is related to nasopharyngeal width and choanal morphology, whereas relative external basicranial proportions are related to nasopharyngeal depth. Human infants were used as models of extreme orthognathy and external basic

Myhre syndrome is characterized by short stature, brachydactyly, facial features, pseudomuscular hypertrophy, joint limitation and hearing loss. We identified SMAD4 mutations as the cause of Myhre syndrome. SMAD4 mutations have also been identified in laryngotracheal stenosis, arthropathy, prognathism and short stature syndrome (LAPS). This study aimed to review the features of Myhre and LAPS patients to define the clinical spectrum of SMAD4 mutations. We included 17 females and 15 males ranging in age from 8 to 48 years. Thirty were diagnosed with Myhre syndrome and two with LAPS. SMAD4 codin

Humans are unique among primates in possessing a chin, yet it is currently unclear whether the form of the symphyseal region of the mandible where the chin is located is the product of direct selection or a by-product of evolutionary pressures on other craniomandibular features. Here, we conduct an evolutionary analysis of hominoid craniomandibular traits to test three hypotheses: symphyseal mandibular traits evolved (1) neutrally due to genetic drift, (2) under direct selection, and (3) as a by-product (or "spandrel") of selection on other craniomandibular traits. Evolutionary rates of morpho

BACKGROUND: The intraoral vertical ramus osteotomy (IVRO) is a surgical technique for prognathic or asymmetric mandible. We wanted to quantitatively and qualitatively analyze the three-dimensional (3D) remodeling pattern of the mandibular ramus one year after IVRO.
METHODS: We reconstructed 3D mandibular models using 3D CT data from 108 IVRO hemi-mandibles of 54 subjects. The immediate postoperative (Imm) proximal and distal segments were separated and individually superimposed to one-year postoperative (Post) mandible by employing a direct segmental-isolated marrow superimposition.

INTRODUCTION: The anatomic relationship between the mandibular canal, cortices and molar apices are critical in preventing nerve damage during various mandibular orthognathic surgeries. The purpose of this study was to determine the relationship between the position of the inferior alveolar canal and the buccal cortex. Analyzing the variation of the nerve position in patient with different mandibular skeletal relationships like prognathic and retrognathic mandible is critical for better prognosis of the surgery.
METHODS: A total of 45 patients including 15 in class I, class II & class III ske

Costochondral graft has been a popular reconstruction choice in the past for temporomandibular joint ankylosis in young individuals. However, accounts of growth hampering complications have also been observed. Our systematic review aims to compile all existing evidence to determine the occurrence of these unfavourable clinical outcomes as well as factors affecting them to provide a better judgement on further use of these grafts. A systematic review was conducted following PRISMA guidelines where databases like PubMed, Web of science and Google Scholar were searched for the purpose of data ext

BACKGROUND: Glycogen storage disease type II (GSDII) or Pompe disease is a rare autosomal recessive metabolic disorder that leads to intracellular glycogen storage in many tissues, mainly in skeletal muscle, heart and liver. Facial muscle weakness and altered craniofacial growth are very common in Pompe disease children. In this paper we describe the orofacial features in two children affected by GSDII and illustrate a multidisciplinary approach that involved enzyme replace therapy, non-invasive ventilation (NIV) and pediatric dentistry with 5-year follow-up.
RESULTS: Two Infantile Pompe Dise
