The correlation between low back pain intensity and sensorimotor function in postpartum women: an analytic cross-sectional study.

OBJECTIVE: This cross-sectional study aimed to investigate the association between postpartum low back pain (PLBP) intensity and postural control and proprioception in postpartum women. DESIGN: This cross-sectional study included 51 women, with a mean of 60.67 ± 3.35 days postpartum. The researchers analyzed the association between PLBP (using a visual analog scale) and several factors, such as postural stability, average speed, path length (measured with a Biodex balance device and Zebris foot pressure), and lumbopelvic proprioception (assessed with a goniometer). Also, Pearson correlations …

Effect of six weeks of dynamic cervical PNF training on neck disability index in men with video display terminal syndrome: a randomized controlled trial.

Chronic neck pain is increasingly common among digital device users due to prolonged static postures. Evidence is limited regarding interventions targeting both neuromuscular control and proprioception. Cervical Proprioceptive Neuromuscular Facilitation (PNF) with Hold-Relax is hypothesized to enhance neuromuscular control and proprioception, improving muscle relaxation and reducing joint position errors (JPE) through sensory-motor coordination. This study evaluated the effectiveness of six weeks of dynamic cervical PNF training on Neck Disability Index (NDI) in men with VDT syndrome. In this …

Feasibility and Validation of a Robotic-Based Multisensory Integration Assessment in Healthy Controls and a Stroke Patient.

After experiencing brain damage, stroke patients commonly suffer from motor and sensory impairments that impact their ability to perform volitional movements. Visuo-proprioceptive integration is a critical component of voluntary movement, allowing for accurate movements and a sense of ownership over one's body. While recent studies have increased our understanding of the balance between visual compensation and proprioceptive deficits in stroke patients, quantitative methods for studying multisensory integration are still lacking. This study aimed to evaluate the feasibility of adapting a 3D vi

Restoring abnormal aftereffects of prismatic adaptation through neuromodulation.

Adaptation to optical prisms displacing the visual scene laterally is a widely investigated instance of visuo-motor plasticity, also because prism adaptation (PA) has been extensively used as a treatment for right-brain-damaged patients suffering from left spatial neglect. The lateral visual displacement brought about by prisms, as indexed by a pointing error in the direction of the displacement, is progressively corrected through repeated pointings: after prism removal, a shift in the direction opposite to the prism-induced deviation occurs in visual, proprioceptive, and visuo-proprioceptive

Test-retest reliability of joint position sense in the elbow among healthy adults.

BACKGROUND: Proprioception of the elbow is necessary for daily activities. Proprioception can be impaired with injury or pathology, and rehabilitation efforts seek to improve proprioception for improved upper extremity functioning. In clinical practice, joint position sense (JPS) testing is often utilized to assess conscious proprioception; however, varying methods exist with little evidence of psychometric properties, especially for the elbow. PURPOSE: The primary aim of this study was to create a standardized elbow JPS test protocol using goniometry measurement to determine the most reliabl…

TouchWGNN: spatio-temporal tactile perception for multimodal dexterous manipulation.

Dexterous in-hand manipulation requires robotic hands to estimate object-state reliably under frequent occlusions, contact-rich interactions, and fast dynamics. Tactile sensing provides high-frequency, contact-specific feedback, although extracting useful representations from raw tactile signals and integrating them with vision and proprioception remains challenging. In this article, we present TouchWGNN, a multimodal dexterous manipulation framework that explicitly models tactile signals as a spatio-temporal graph. We first develop a low-cost distributed tactile sensor array for a five-finger…

In some neurological conditions, like Parkinson's disease (PD) and Cerebral Palsy (CP), as well as with ageing, muscle spindles have been me … with different discharge frequencies and sensitivities. With increasing age comes a loss of precise proprioception, something that coincides with a change in the AMG E-score towards lower values, indicating a reduced level of coordination and efficiency of muscle use. With PD and CP there is likewise a documented decrease in proprioception, also showing lower E- …

A C. elegans stretch receptor neuron revealed by a mechanosensitive TRP channel homologue.

The nematode Caenorhabditis elegans is commonly used as a genetic model organism for dissecting integration of the sensory and motor systems. Despite extensive genetic and behavioural analyses that have led to the identification of many genes and neural circuits involved in regulating C. elegans locomotion behaviour, it remains unclear whether and how somatosensory feedback modulates motor output during locomotion. In particular, no stretch receptors have been identified in C. elegans, raising the issue of whether stretch-receptor-mediated proprioception is used by C. elegans to regulate its l…

Neuroanatomical and behavioural factors associated with the effectiveness of two weekly sessions of prism adaptation in the treatment of unilateral neglect.

Among the different interventions to alleviate the symptoms of unilateral neglect, prism adaptation (PA) appears especially promising. To elucidate the contribution of some neuroanatomical and behavioural factors to PA's effectiveness, we conducted a study combining neuropsychological and lesion mapping methods on a group of 19 neglect patients who underwent two sessions of PA during one week and assessed their improvement relative to the baseline until the following week (7-8 days later). Correlation analyses revealed a significant positive relationship between the magnitude of the propriocep

Sensorimotor integration and functional mobility in early-stage Parkinson's disease: A cross-sectional study using clinically feasible assessments.

Early-stage Parkinson's disease (PD) often features subtle sensorimotor integration deficits that may precede noticeable motor decline. This study examined how proprioceptive acuity, balance performance, and functional mobility relate to dual-task gait cost (DTC) in individuals with early-stage PD. Forty-six participants with idiopathic PD (Hoehn & Yahr stages I-II) completed assessments including passive ankle joint position sense testing for proprioception, the modified Clinical Test of Sensory Interaction on Balance (mCTSIB), and a reactive stepping task for balance. Gait was evaluated with…

Spatiotemporal structuration of sensorimotor information during walking in knee osteoarthritis patients.

OBJECTIVE: Patients with knee osteoarthritis (KOA) exhibit proprioceptive deficits and changes in neuromuscular control, which may consequently lead to functional motor impairment. However, how altered proprioceptive feedback interacts with changed neuromuscular control after injury remains unclear. This study aimed to elucidate the spatiotemporal interaction patterns between lower-limb muscle activity and proprioceptive feedback in patients with knee osteoarthritis during walking, to reflect changes in their neuromuscular control mechanisms. METHODS: Fifteen KOA patients and fifteen healthy

Location of Nociceptive Stimulus in the Peripersonal Space Impacts Pain Experience.

Peripersonal space (PPS) is the area surrounding the body where we can reach, see, and interact with objects, acting as a dynamic interface … influence pain reports. Beyond the traditionally included tactile, visual, and auditory modalities, proprioception should be considered in a more complex conceptualization of PPS. Our results indicate that the location of thermal stimulation might influence pain intensity within the PPS, and that a complex interplay exists between proprioceptive information and …
