In a longitudinal study on sex steroids and steroid binding proteins in primary biliary cirrhosis (PBC), 9 female patients were compared with 27 strictly age-matched healthy controls. In the patients we found elevated levels of androstenedione and, in advanced disease, of testosterone. Estramustine-binding protein (EMBP) in human prostatic cancer before and after androgen-deprivation therapy was determined with an immunohistochemical technique. Malignant hyperthermia occurs in man and pigs as a hereditary disorder notably as a complication of halothane-induced anaesthesia. It involves an abnormality in the metabolism of Ca2+. A search was made for abnormalities of calcium-binding proteins. Troponin C from normal pig muscle was found to differ in 2 of 159 amino acids from rabbit Tn C and 3 from man. No differences between normal and abnormal pig muscle were found. Two-dimensional electrophoresis of red cell calmodulin from normal and abnormal pigs also failed to demonstrate a difference.

The plasma protein binding of salicylate, a representative acidic drug, and of quinidine, a representative basic drug, has been studied in patients with multiple myeloma, a disease characterized by a profound alteration of the plasma protein pattern. Abnormal binding of salicylate was detected only in patients with high values of circulating abnormal protein. Plasma protein binding of quinidine was not altered in any of the patients studied.

A technique is described in which paper chromatoelectrophoresis is used to measure the bilirubin binding capacity of albumin in serum. It is equivalent to the Sephadex G-25 method and its results are highly reproducible.
