[The dopamine transporter: characterization and physiopathologic implications].

The dopamine transporter (DAT) is the carrier protein that transports dopamine across the presynaptic membrane. The DAT terminates the action of dopamine (DA) in the synapse via reuptake and thus regulates DA neurotransmission. The transporter has been studied by direct binding techniques using a variety of ligands which are inhibitors of DA transport. DAT binding, both in vivo (positron emission tomography) and in vitro (post mortem) may serve as a presynaptic marker to measure altered DA innervation in several neuropsychiatric diseases such as idiopathic Parkinson's disease, Tourette's disea

Functional neuroanatomy and neuropathology of the human hypothalamus.

The human hypothalamus is involved in a wide range of functions in the developing, adult and aging subject and is responsible for a large number of symptoms of neuroendocrine, neurological and psychiatric diseases. In the present review some prominent hypothalamic nuclei are discussed in relation to normal development, sexual differentiation, aging and a number of neuropathological conditions. The suprachiasmatic nucleus, the clock of the brain, shows seasonal and circadian variations in its vasopressin neurons. During normal aging, but even more so in Alzheimer's disease, the number of these

White matter functional connectome topology and its clinical correlations in adolescent major depressive disorder.

BACKGROUND: Adolescence is a critical period for brain network remodeling and the onset of major depressive disorder (MDD); however, white matter (WM) functional topology in adolescent MDD remains underexplored. Given that WM functional signals reflect meaningful neural activity and are disrupted in psychiatric disorders, this study aimed to characterize WM functional connectome alterations in adolescents with MDD and examine their clinical associations. METHODS: Resting-state fMRI data were obtained from a cohort of adolescents with MDD (n = 320) and healthy controls (HCs, n = 144), as well

"Stay Calm and Pick Up Signs to Understand the Cause": Registered Nurses Use Multiple Strategies for Handling Difficult Emergency Calls.

BACKGROUND: Telephone triage at emergency medical dispatch centers (EMDCs) is often challenging for registered nurses (RNs), and some calls may be difficult to handle. To enable education and interventions for call-taking RNs, lessons can be learned by studying authentic calls. AIM: The aim of this study was to describe the strategies used by RNs in difficult calls to EMDCs. METHODS: Call data from 2022 to 2023 were extracted for 14 RNs at three EMDCs in Sweden. Difficult calls were identified based on prior research and operationalized primarily using keyword searches in the free text call

The Thrills and Spills of GHB: Patterns and Negative Events Connected with Use in a Large Community Sample.

Introduction: Gamma-hydroxybutyric acid (GHB) and its precursor gamma-butyrolactone (GBL) are psychoactive substances commonly associated with men who have sex with men (MSM) and sexualized substance use contexts. Large-scale studies exploring broader sociodemographic characteristics and substance use behaviors among GHB/GBL users remain scarce. Methods: A convenience sample was recruited online through nightlife contexts to complete an anonymous online-questionnaire with a one-year follow-up. The survey assessed sociodemographic data, use of GHB/GBL and other psychoactive substances, GHB/GBL-

Surgical screening protocol for craniocervical instability secondary to ehlers-danlos syndrome and other connective tissue disorders: analysis of a 347 patient case series.

BACKGROUND: Evaluation of craniocervical instability (CCI) in individuals with connective tissue disorders (CTDs) remains controversial. We present a surgical screening protocol created and implemented at our institution for these individuals. METHODS: We reviewed patients referred to our institution for CCI secondary to CTDs, between May 2018 and April 2022 using our two-stage protocol. Stage 1 included: history, clinical questionnaire, physical examination, non-invasive provocative testing, neuroimaging with morphometric analysis, Karnofsky Performance Scale. Items 1–5 were each scored on a

Optimizing Identification and Management of Depression in Neurological Diseases: A Narrative Review and Expert Perspective.

Comprehensive brain health is increasingly being recognized as critically important worldwide and incorporates elements of neurological and psychiatric health. This evolution in the view of cerebral wellbeing considers the many factors that can affect brain health and the interconnectedness of conditions affecting this organ. Such interplay between neurological and depressive diseases is highlighted by observations that these conditions share underlying pathophysiology and frequently co-occur in the same patient. A review of the literature on depression in post-stroke, Parkinson's disease, mul

The role of isolated diffuse axonal brain injury on post-traumatic depressive- and anxiety-like behavior in rats.

Traumatic brain injury (TBI) is a significant global health concern and is associated with short-term and long-term comorbidities such as mood disorders and reduced quality of life. Diffuse axonal brain injury (DABI) is a common but severe type of TBI. The role of DABI in the development of psychiatric sequelae after TBI is not well understood due to the challenge of isolating DABI from general TBI in the human population. Here we investigate the role of DABI in the occurrence of post-TBI depressive- and anxiety-like behaviors in a rat model. Forty rats were randomly assigned to two groups, wi

Discriminant diagnostic validity of paediatric bipolar disorder screening tests: A systematic review and meta-analysis.

INTRODUCTION: Bipolar disorders (BD) are among the most significantly impairing of childhood and adolescent psychiatric disorders. Although BD symptoms may begin in adolescence, they are frequently not diagnosed until adulthood, and accordingly BD scales could aid diagnostic assessment in paediatric populations. This review aims to synthesis the evidence for the accuracy of BD symptom index tests for discriminating BD from non-BD (other diagnoses or healthy controls) in paediatric population. Additionally, several theoretically relevant moderators of diagnostic accuracy were evaluated. METHOD

Polygenic risk for major depression, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, neuroticism, and schizophrenia are correlated with experience of intimate partner violence.

Research has suggested that mental illness may be a risk factor for, as well as a sequela of, experiencing intimate partner violence (IPV). The association between IPV and mental illness may also be due in part to gene-environment correlations. Using polygenic risk scores for six psychiatric disorders - attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), autism spectrum disorder (ASD), bipolar disorder (BPD), major depressive disorder (MDD), neuroticism, and schizophrenia-and a combined measure of overall genetic risk for mental illness, we tested whether women's genetic risk for mental illness w

A Scoping Review: Is Yoga an Effective Intervention for Erectile Dysfunction and Premature Ejaculation?

There is increasing concern among both healthcare professionals and the general public about the long-term effectiveness and possible adverse effects of medicines used to treat premature ejaculation (PE) and erectile dysfunction (ED). There is also a growing recognition of the advantages of incorporating alternative or traditional approaches into healthcare systems. Yoga is gaining popularity globally and has emerged as a viable adjunct and alternative to add value to patient care and prevention of illnesses, which requires further investigation. This scoping review aimed to explore the effect

Effects of Substance Use and Antisocial Personality on Neuroimaging-Based Machine Learning Prediction of Schizophrenia.

BACKGROUND AND HYPOTHESIS: Neuroimaging-based machine learning (ML) algorithms have the potential to aid the clinical diagnosis of schizophrenia. However, literature on the effect of prevalent comorbidities such as substance use disorder (SUD) and antisocial personality (ASPD) on these models' performance has remained unexplored. We investigated whether the presence of SUD or ASPD affects the performance of neuroimaging-based ML models trained to discern patients with schizophrenia (SCH) from controls. STUDY DESIGN: We trained an ML model on structural MRI data from public datasets to disting

Emerging drugs for dementia with Lewy Bodies: a review of Phase II & III trials.

INTRODUCTION: Despite faster cognitive decline and greater negative impact on patients and family caregivers, drug development efforts in Dementia with Lewy Bodies (DLB) fall behind those for Alzheimer's Disease (AD). Current off-label drug DLB treatment options are limited to symptomatic agents developed to address cognitive deficits in AD, motor deficits in Parkinson's Disease, or behavioral symptoms in psychiatric disease. Aided by recent improvements in DLB diagnosis, a new focus on the development of disease-modifying agents (DMA) is emerging. AREAS COVERED: Driven by evidence supporting

Decreased insight, but not self-stigma or belief about medicine, is associated with greater severity of delusions in a sample of long-stay patients with schizophrenia: a cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: There are, to date, limited and inconsistent findings concerning the relationship between insight and psychotic symptoms, despite some evidence in favor of the clinical and therapeutic relevance of the insight construct. We aimed to add to the pool of the available data in this area, by examining the correlations between the severity of insight and positive psychotic symptoms (delusions and auditory hallucinations), while accounting for self-stigma and attitudes towards medication, in a sample of long-stay inpatients with schizophrenia. METHODS: A cross-sectional study was conduct

Structural Imaging in OCD.

Anatomical imaging in OCD using magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) has been performed since the late 1980s. MRI research was further stimulated with the advent of automated image processing techniques such as voxel-based morphometry (VBM) and surface-based methods (e.g., FreeSurfer) which allow for detailed whole-brain data analyses. Early studies suggesting involvement of corticostriatal circuitry (particularly orbitofrontal cortex and ventral striatum) have been complemented by meta-analyses and pooled analyses indicating additional involvement of posterior brain regions, in particular parieta
