Gustatory dysfunction after mandibular zoster.

Varicella zoster, limited to the mandibular nerve, is rare. Classical symptoms are pain, hypesthesia and vesicular eruption restricted to the third trigeminal segment (V3). Little is known on taste affection after mandibular nerve zoster. We report two cases of patients suffering from mandibular zoster associated with subjective taste disorder. In both cases, gustatory measures confirmed ipsilateral hemiageusia of the anterior two-thirds of the tongue. After 2 months, the symptoms regressed and psychophysical measures came back to normal values, whereas post-zoster neuralgia lasted for more th

Adenoviral vector-mediated rescue of the OMP-null behavioral phenotype: enhancement of odorant threshold sensitivity.

Mice from which the olfactory marker protein (OMP) gene has been deleted demonstrate a number of neurophysiologic and behavioral defects that suggest OMP is an important component in olfactory signal transduction and is critically involved in odor processing. Recently, the potential pleiotropic effects of gene deletion were addressed by adenoviral vector-mediated rescue of the neurophysiologic defects, in vivo. As a complement to this study, the authors used a recombinant adenoviral vector to transiently introduce OMP into olfactory sensory neurons of adult OMP-null mice and, using psychophysi

fMRI activation in response to illusory contours and salient regions in the human lateral occipital complex.

Regions in the human Lateral Occipital Complex (LOC) show fMRI responses to illusory surfaces. We show that the LOC activation is due to the globally completed region and occurs even when the region is not bounded by illusory contours (ICs). Kanizsa-type stimuli were modified by rounding the corners of the "pacmen" inducers and misaligning them slightly. The impression of an enclosed, salient region (SR) remained, although ICs were no longer perceived (psychophysical data). fMRI activity was elevated for both the IC and SR stimuli, compared to their control stimuli. The LOC response to salient

Alpha 2-adrenergic receptor sensitivity in panic disorder: I. GH response to GHRH and clonidine stimulation in panic disorder.

Baseline levels of GH and somatomedin C (SmC) and GH responses to GHRH (1 microgram/kg b.w.) and to clonidine (150 micrograms) were measured in 10 outpatients with panic disorder before and after 30 days of 2-2.5 mg of alprazolam therapy, and in 10 psychophysically healthy controls. Basal levels of GH were normal in the patients and those of SmC significantly elevated, both before and after therapy. Basal GH responses to GHRH stimulation were normal and did not change change after alprazolam treatment. Basal GH responses to clonidine stimulation were blunted in the patients and improved after

Photopic sensitivities to ultraviolet and visible wavelengths and the effects of the macular pigments in human aphakic observers.

Psychophysical spectral sensitivities were obtained from aphakic human subjects in the photopic range. The foveal spectrum has a primary peak near 550 nm and a secondary peak about 0.7 log units lower around 380 nm. Off fovea, beyond most of the macular pigment, the curve is quite broad. While the peak is in the green, the gradual drop-off to 330 nm varies over only half a log unit. The two curves were compared in order to obtain an estimate of the macular pigments' spectrum. The macular pigments' curve has peaks at 460 and 490 nm as expected. It is broad and extends into the UV. These data su

Retinitis pigmentosa: Diagnosis and management.

Retinitis pigmentosa (RP), the most common inherited retinal dystrophy (IRD), results in profound visual disability at advanced stages. This large family of genetic disorders, funneling into the same end-stage phenotype, is the subject of significant research and progress. With gene therapy already available for RPE-65 Leber's congenital amaurosis, in essence, RP manifesting at infancy, and many more gene and other therapeutic options in the pipeline, a better understanding of this condition is essential. Here we describe the disorder's phenotype, clinical course with emphasis on its effect on

Neural encoding of real world face perception.

Social perception unfolds as we freely interact with people around us. We investigated the neural basis of real world face perception using multi electrode intracranial recordings in humans during spontaneous interactions with friends, family, and others. Computational models reconstructed the faces participants looked at during natural interactions, including facial expressions and motion, from brain activity alone. The results highlighted a critical role for the social vision pathway, a network of areas spanning parietal, temporal, and occipital cortex. This network was more sharply tuned to

Progressive cone and cone-rod dystrophies: clinical features, molecular genetics and prospects for therapy.

Progressive cone and cone-rod dystrophies are a clinically and genetically heterogeneous group of inherited retinal diseases characterised by cone photoreceptor degeneration, which may be followed by subsequent rod photoreceptor loss. These disorders typically present with progressive loss of central vision, colour vision disturbance and photophobia. Considerable progress has been made in elucidating the molecular genetics and genotype-phenotype correlations associated with these dystrophies, with mutations in at least 30 genes implicated in this group of disorders. We discuss the genetics, an

Back on the scent: the olfactory system in CNS demyelinating diseases.

Olfactory dysfunction is recognised across an ever broadening spectrum of neuropsychiatric conditions including central nervous system (CNS) demyelinating diseases such as multiple sclerosis (MS) and neuromyelitis optica (NMO). In this review, we unravel the striking evidence highlighting how olfactory loss is a common clinical feature in MS and NMO. We provide an overview of the supportive psychophysical, electrophysiological, radiological and pathological data that point to the anatomical substrate of olfactory deficits in these diseases. The pattern of underlying pathology affecting the olf

Vestibular-Somatosensory Interactions: A Mechanism in Search of a Function?

No unimodal vestibular cortex has been identified in the human brain. Rather, vestibular inputs are strongly integrated with signals from other sensory modalities, such as vision, touch and proprioception. This convergence could reflect an important mechanism for maintaining a perception of the body, including individual body parts, relative to the rest of the environment. Neuroimaging, electrophysiological and psychophysical studies showed evidence for multisensory interactions between vestibular and somatosensory signals. However, no convincing overall theoretical framework has been proposed

How low can you go: spatial frequency sensitivity in a patient with pure alexia.

Pure alexia is a selective deficit in reading, following lesions to the posterior left hemisphere. Writing and other language functions remain intact in these patients. Whether pure alexia is caused by a primary problem in visual perception is highly debated. A recent hypothesis suggests that a low level deficit - reduced sensitivity to particular spatial frequencies - is the underlying cause. We tested this hypothesis in a pure alexic patient (LK), using a sensitive psychophysical paradigm to examine her performance with simple patterns of different spatial frequency. We find that both in a d

Depressive disorder and alopecia.

Psychophysical dermatitis is frequently manifested in patients that suffer from psychiatric illnesses and disorders as well as in patients that suffer from depressive disorders. These diseases occur or worsen after acute stress that may trigger them. Difficulties in expressing feelings or impossibility to verbalise them are connected to somatic diseases. In order to emphasize their importance, we will present a case of a 58 years old woman who has been suffering from alopecia areata that developed after her husband's death. The patient doesn't function well since then - she is socially isolate

Macular function in tilted disc syndrome.

Tilted disc syndrome can cause visual field defects due to an optic disc anomaly. Recent electrophysiological findings demonstrate reduced central outer retinal function with ophthalmoscopically normal maculae. We measured macular sensitivity with the microperimeter and performed psychophysical assessment of mesopic rod and cone luminance temporal sensitivity (critical fusion frequency) in a 52-year-old male patient with tilted disc syndrome and ophthalmoscopically normal maculae. We found a marked reduction of sensitivity in the central 20 and reduced rod- and cone-mediated mesopic visual fun

Precursor effects on behavioral estimates of frequency selectivity and gain in forward masking.

The experiments presented in this paper explore the hypothesis that cochlear gain is reduced, in a frequency-specific manner, over the course of a sound (called a "precursor") which was designed to activate the medial olivo-cochlear reflex (MOCR). Psychophysical tuning curves (PTCs) and off-frequency growth of masking (GOM) functions were measured with two precursors. The on-frequency precursor condition, which was hypothesized to activate the MOCR at the signal frequency, produced a PTC with a lower best frequency in all subjects consistent with less gain. This same condition produced a GOM f

Loss of olfactory function after exposure to barbituric acid.

In this case report a patient with anosmia due to occupational exposure to barbituric acid will be presented. Occupational exposure to high concentrations of barbituric acid resulted in bloody nasal secretion and nasal itching with immediate onset following exposure. After several days of exposure, a progressive loss of smell resulted in anosmia. Psychophysical and electrophysiological assessment of olfactory function with the "Sniffin Sticks" test and event-related potentials based on air dilution olfactometry confirmed the patients' reports. After 2 years no recovery is remarked. Toxic anosm

[Examination of the sense of smell].

Olfactory disorders are common. Functional anosmia is present in about 5-6% of the general population, while from the age of about 55 years the olfactory sense is restricted in about 25% of cases. A precise examination is necessary to describe the patient's symptoms and ascertain possible reasons for them. As far as diagnosis and possible treatment of olfactory or gustatory disorders are concerned, the main advantage allowing progress is the availability of standardised methods of testing the chemical senses. In this article procedures for orthonasal and retronasal psychophysical examination o

[Dysfunction of the magnocellular pathway in Alzheimer's disease].

Visual disturbances are a common feature of Alhzeimer's disease. They are related primarily to visuo-spatial deficits. The pathways mediating visuo-spatial and form identification are at least partially segregated in the brain. The magnocellular pathway has characteristics which make it more suitable for detecting dynamic form, motion and depth. We assessed by means of psychophysical and electrophysiological testings the properties of the parvo and the magnocellular pathways. We found contrast sensitivity deficits for the low and middle spatial frequencies, a significant reduction of the ampli

Visual localization in dyslexia.

Individuals with specific reading disability (SRD) may exhibit visual psychophysical abnormalities that include prolonged visual persistence, decreased luminance contrast sensitivity, lower flicker fusion thresholds, abnormal metacontrast masking, and lower motion detection sensitivity. These abnormalities could result from impairment of the magnocellular division of the visual afferent pathway to the cortex. The authors predicted that an impairment of this pathway would also cause abnormalities in ability to localize visual stimuli. This prediction was tested in 2 experiments. Results of both

Auditory perceptual and visual-spatial characteristics of gaze-evoked tinnitus.

Auditory perceptual and visual-spatial characteristics of subjective tinnitus evoked by eye gaze were studied in two adult human subjects. This uncommon form of tinnitus occurred approximately 4-6 weeks following neurosurgery for gross total excision of space-occupying lesions of the cerebellopontine angle and hearing was lost in the operated ear. In both cases, the gaze-evoked tinnitus was characterized as being tonal in nature, with pitch and loudness percepts remaining constant as long as the same horizontal or vertical eye directions were maintained. Tinnitus was absent when the eyes were
