Ventricular assist devices as destination therapy: psychosocial and ethical implications.

One of the candidate evaluation challenges is determining when and how psychosocial domains influence short- and long-term destination therapy ventricular assist device (DT-VAD) outcomes. There are very few DT-VAD studies and no validated instruments to identify psychosocial risk factors. General practice is to borrow from the transplant literature, which may not be applicable to this unique device application. We question the relevance of using transplant psychosocial evaluation for patients who are candidates for DT-VAD only, particularly because these patients require a certain level of cog

Impact of growing up with Fabry disease on achievement of psychosocial milestones and quality of life.

Little is known on the impact of growing up with Fabry disease (FD) on psychosocial development. Children with FD may suffer from severe recurrent pains in hands and feet, gastro-intestinal symptoms and heat intolerance. These symptoms may influence quality of life and may interfere with a normal psychosocial development. It is important to evaluate psychosocial outcomes of patients with FD into adulthood to be able to optimize support of children with FD. The current cross-sectional questionnaire study investigated psychosocial development and quality of life of 28 young adults with FD, aged

Patient-reported and caregiver-reported outcomes after limb salvage or amputation for pediatric bone and soft tissue sarcomas: a scoping review.

PURPOSE: Children diagnosed with bone tumors or soft tissue sarcomas often undergo limb salvage surgery or amputation, procedures that shape long-term functioning and quality of life (QOL). Patient-reported and caregiver-reported outcomes (PROs) provide essential insight into physical, psychosocial, and participation impacts, yet existing evidence is dispersed and methodologically heterogeneous. This scoping review mapped the PRO literature for children, survivors, and caregivers following cancer-related limb surgery and identified gaps limiting clinical care and research advancement. Psychosocial morbidity in children, and their families, awaiting heart or heart-lung transplantation.

Awaiting heart or heart lung transplantation is a time of extreme stress for child and family, but there has been little evaluation of the psychosocial morbidity in this population. This preliminary study monitored changes in the mental health status of these children and their families. Fifty-one children considered suitable for transplantation and their families were assessed at the time of acceptance onto the waiting list and 6 months later. Twenty-five percent of the children had a psychiatric disorder, and 60% had a degree of impairment in psychosocial functioning. These high levels of mo…

Adaptation to marital separation in later and earlier life.

In recent years, the divorce rate has increased markedly for people of all ages. Whereas the consequences of the divorce experience for those in young adulthood have received considerable attention, relatively little is known about their impact on older adults. This paper evaluates the psychosocial functioning of recently separated men and women (N = 310) ranging in age from 20 to the 70s. Included in the analyses were measures of morale, psychiatric symptoms, time perspective, self-reported physical health, social disruption, personal disruption, and divorce-induced upset. The older responden…

The family impact of caring for a child with juvenile dermatomyositis.

Background Juvenile dermatomyositis (JDM), a rare autoimmune disease, accounts for more than 80% of idiopathic inflammatory myopathy childhood cases, making it the most common idiopathic inflammatory myopathy among children. The average age of onset is approximately 7 years and commonly leads a chronic course. Symptoms of JDM include cutaneous features (Gottron's rash, heliotrope rash, or nail fold capillary changes), musculoskeletal features, calcinosis and lipodystrophy (a symmetrical deficit of subcutaneous fatty tissue), and acanthosis (thickening of the skin). Despite improvement in treat

Temporomandibular Disorder Diagnostic Groups Affect Outcomes Independently of Treatment in Patients at Risk for Developing Chronicity: A 2-Year Follow-Up Study.

AIMS: To evaluate whether a biobehavioral intervention would be more effective than a self-care intervention or no intervention in reducing psychosocial distress, reducing pain, and improving functioning in patients with an acute myofascial temporomandibular disorder (m-TMD). METHODS: Participants (n = 435) were from community dental clinics in the Dallas-Fort Worth Metroplex who were seeking treatment for their acute TMD symptoms and were recruited between 2008 and 2013. The participants were diagnosed using the Research Diagnostic Criteria for TMD (RDC/TMD) and assigned to a biobehavioral i

Resilient functioning is associated with altered structural brain network topology in adolescents exposed to childhood adversity.

Childhood adversity is one of the strongest predictors of adolescent mental illness. Therefore, it is critical that the mechanisms that aid resilient functioning in individuals exposed to childhood adversity are better understood. Here, we examined whether resilient functioning was related to structural brain network topology. We quantified resilient functioning at the individual level as psychosocial functioning adjusted for the severity of childhood adversity in a large sample of adolescents (N = 2406, aged 14-24). Next, we examined nodal degree (the number of connections that brain regions …

Comparative multidimensional psychosocial profiles of major depressive disorder patients with higher versus lower anhedonia burden: a cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: Anhedonia is a core symptom of major depressive disorder (MDD) and is linked to greater severity, poorer functioning, and elevated suicide risk, yet its broader psychosocial correlates in routine clinical settings remain insufficiently characterized. This study compared multidimensional psychosocial profiles between MDD patients with higher versus lower anhedonia burden. METHODS: In this cross-sectional study, outpatients aged 18-45 years with MDD were recruited between January and December 2024; 125 participants with complete and valid questionnaires were included in the final an
