Acute Q fever in children presenting with encephalitis.

We describe the cases of three children with encephalitis associated with Coxiella burnetii infection. Neurologic features ranged from status epilepticus and coma to headache and pseudotumor cerebri syndrome. Patients had good response to antibiotic treatment with doxycycline and recovered fully. Q fever should be included in the differential diagnosis of children with encephalitis, and routine serological testing should be considered, especially in endemic areas.

Q fever outbreak at a cosmetics supply factory.

Q fever is a zoonotic disease that is most commonly associated with outbreaks in slaughterhouses. We describe an outbreak of 4 cases occurring in a factory that processes ovine fetal products for the cosmetics industry. It is important that industries typically not associated with risk of Q fever are made aware of potential health risks that workers might be exposed to so further outbreaks might be prevented.

Role of goats in epizootiology and epidemiology of Q fever.

Numerous data show that the epizootics of Q fever in goats can be particularly related to cases of this disease in humans. The aim of the study was to examine 98 goat serum samples from the farm where abortions, early parturition and parturition of weak goatlings were noted. The microaglutination method was used in this study. Serum dilution 1:8 was defined as a positive titre. An outbreak of Q fever in an urban area in Israel.

Reported here is an outbreak of 21 cases of Q fever that were diagnosed during 5 months in the spring and summer of 2001 at Rambam Medical Center, Haifa, Israel. An epidemiological investigation and a case-control study were conducted to identify risk factors associated with acquisition of the disease in this outbreak. Serum samples from people exposed to sheep at a research facility were evaluated by a commercial laboratory and resulted in an overall Coxie … tested in parallel at CDC. Upon final analysis, only the attending veterinarian was confirmed as a Q fever case. A murmur of aortic regurgitation was discovered in an asymptomatic patient who had suffered from an acute Coxiella Burnetti infection several months before hand. Q fever endocarditis in Israel and a worldwide review.

The worldwide epidemiology and population-based incidence of Q fever endocarditis (QFE) have been less well studied than those for uncomplicated Q fever. An exhaustive literature review revealed 408 patients with QFE reported between 1949 and 1994, mostly from 3 large geographic areas. From 1992 till the end of 1994, three epidemics of Q fever among people have been recognised in Poland. In 1992 the outbreak of Q fever was detected at the farm near Jawor in Legnica district. Hemophagocytosis: a complication of acute Q fever in a child.

We describe an 11-year-old boy with acute Q fever complicated by hemophagocytosis. In addition to pancytopenia, the boy presented with hyponatremia, hypofibrinogenemia, and changes in lipid metabolism. Examination of a bone marrow aspirate revealed striking hemophagocytosis. All of the pathological changes were caused by an activated macrophage system. We also discuss the possible role that pathogenetic mechanisms play in these changes.
