OBJECTIVE: Evaluate the test-retest reliability of quadriceps corticospinal excitability and intracortical excitability using transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS).
DESIGN: A test-retest observational cohort study.
METHODS: Twelve healthy adults attended two laboratory sessions, seated with their knee at 90 degrees and fitted with electrodes on the rectus femoris (RF), vastus lateralis (VL) and vastus medialis (VM). TMS was used to assess the active motor threshold (AMT), motor evoked potential (MEP) amplitude, short-interval intracortical inhibition (SICI) and intracortical facilitation (

CONTEXT/OBJECTIVE: For persons with spinal cord injury, spasticity commonly interferes with activities of daily living such as transfers. El … ctromyographic measurements of involuntary muscle activity (spasm duration and magnitude) evoked in quadriceps muscles during transfers on two days. Impact of spasticity on daily life was measured with the Spinal Cord Injury Spasticity Evaluation Tool. Clinically-rated spasticity severity was measured with the Spinal Cord Assessment Tool for Spastic reflexes.

AIM: This randomized double blind controlled study is aimed at determining the effect of repeated vibratory stimuli focally applied to the contracted quadriceps muscles (repeated muscle vibration=rMV) on bone mineral density, leg power and balance of postmenopausal osteoporotic women.
METHODS: The study has been conducted on 40 voluntary postmenopausal osteoporotic women, randomised at 2 groups for rMV treatment and for control. The treatment group underwent rMV (100Hz, 300-500 μm; three applications per day, each lasting 10-minutes, for 3 consecutive days) applied to voluntary contracted qua…

At below-knee amputation for arterial insufficiency in 31 patients, the muscle blood flow of quadriceps and triceps surae was measured by clearance of 99mTc pertechnetate pre- and postoperatively. In 15 patients, myoplastic amputation was performed and in 16 patients the medullary cavity of the tibial stump was plugged with cortex of the removed bone as well. Plugging caused a two-third increase in muscle blood flow.

INTRODUCTION: The quadriceps femoris muscle is present in the anterior region of the thigh and is classically described as a muscle with four heads: rectus femoris, vastus lateralis, vastus medialis, and vastus intermedius. A few years ago, a "fifth head" was described and named the tensor of the vastus intermedius (TVI). The TVI belly is in line with the belly of the vastus lateralis, and its aponeurosis imposes considerable tension on the vastus intermedius, medializing its action, to play a significant role in knee extension.
OBJECTIVE: To perform a study of the TVI incidence in a Brazilia

Patellar tendinopathy is characterized by tendon pain which may reduce the level of performance. This study's main aim was to compare isokinetic knee strength and jump performances at the start of the sport season between players with patellar tendinopathy and those without. Secondary aims were to assess the relationship between knee strength and jump function. Sixty-two professional basketball players were enrolled (mean age: 25.0 ± 4.0). All players performed knee isokinetic measurements, single leg countermovement jumps, and one leg hop tests. Correlations between knee strength and jump per

PURPOSE: No therapeutic consensus has been established about proximal ruptures of the rectus femoris muscle. The objective of this literature review is to determine a therapeutic course of action.
METHODS: We conducted a literature review on the PubMed database using the following keywords (in French and English, respectively): "quadriceps/quadriceps", "droit antérieur/rectus femoris", "proximal/proximal", "chirurgie/surgical", "avulsion/avulsion". We collected 266 articles, 36 of them were selected, which were related to our topic: proximal rupture of the anterior rectus femoris. Patients wi

This report describes a severe injury to the proximal rectus femoris (RF) muscle in a 37-year-old recreational athlete. This injury is a relatively rare occurrence in both the general and elite athletic populations. Acute and long-term imaging and functional outcomes are described. This athlete was able to return to full activity without surgical intervention. Follow-up imaging demonstrated gross healing of both complete (or near complete) muscle and tendon tears. LEVEL OF EVIDENCE: V.

Congenital knee dislocation is an infrequent condition with unknown etiology. In some cases it occurs as an isolated condition, while in others it coexists with associated conditions or syndromes. The treatment of congenital knee dislocation is driven by the severity and flexibility of the deformity. The literature includes from serial casting or the Pavlik harness to quadriceps tendon plasty or femoral osteotomies. We report herein the case of a congenital dislocation treated with serial casting with a good outcome.

BACKGROUND: Centronuclear myopathy (CNM) is a rare inherited neuromuscular disorder characterized by centrally placed nuclei in striated muscle. In this report, we describe the histological changes in the extraocular muscle (EOM) from a CNM patient with a mutation in Dynamic 2 (DNM2).
MATERIALS AND METHODS: A 33-year-old Caucasian female presented with horizontal diplopia and left exotropia for 6 months prior to which she was asymptomatic. Her past medical history was significant for CNM, diagnosed based on a left quadriceps biopsy with onset of lower extremity weakness in her late 20s. She u

OBJECTIVES: The objectives of this study were (1) to explore US findings for muscle mass, muscle quality and muscle stiffness in SLE patients and healthy subjects; (2) to investigate the relationship between the US muscle findings and physical performance in SLE patients and healthy subjects.
METHODS: Quadriceps muscle thickness was used for assessment of muscle mass, muscle echogenicity (using a visual semi-quantitative scale and grayscale analysis with histograms) for assessment of muscle quality, and point shear-wave elastography (SWE) for assessment of muscle stiffness in 30 SLE patients …

This study aims to investigate the ability of parathyroid hormone (PTH)-related peptide-1/type I collagen (PTHrP-1/Col-I) scaffold material to induce ectopic osteogenesis in the quadriceps muscle pocket of Sprague-Dawley (SD) rats. A novel peptide PTHrP-1 was derived from PTH and used at different concentrations (0, 0.1, 0.3, and 0.5 mg/ml) to induce ectopic osteogenesis. Radiographic examinations (X-ray, CT, and 3D reconstruction), pathological observations (H&E, Masson, Von Kossa, ALP and TRAP staining), immunohistochemical staining (Col-I, OCN and Runx-2 in tissues), western blotting was us…

Impaired contraction steadiness of lower limb muscles affects functional performance and may increase injury risk. We hypothesize that haemophilic arthropathy of the knee and the strength status of quadriceps are relevant factors which compromise a steady contraction. This study addresses the questions if impaired steadiness of the quadriceps is verifiable in people with haemophilia (PWH) and whether a connection between the status of the knee joint and quadriceps strength exists. A total of 157 PWH and 85 controls (C) performed a strength test with a knee extensor device to evaluate their bil

Most of the existing research has focused on jump plyometrics, where landing reaction forces must be dissipated among lower limb articulations. In contrast, the investigation of resisted plyometrics without jumping, devoid of such landing forces, remains relatively limited. This study aimed to (i) investigate the impact of resisted plyometrics without jumping at two knee flexion angles (60 and 90 degrees) on vastus muscle activity relative to limb dominance and (ii) assess strength, power, and work during the concentric-eccentric phases of these exercises. Thirty-one healthy participants under

The detailed anatomy of the rectus femoris and corresponding injury appearances were first described in 1995. Since then, there has been little published to change our understanding of this complex anatomical area. More recent anatomical dissection work in 2004 and 2006 alluded to the presence of an altered configuration of the proximal tendon anatomy. Whilst widely accepted that the proximal rectus femoris muscle has two distinct tendon slips, the authors in 2006 described a third separate tendon slip arising from the anterior femoral capsule and this has been widely termed the 'capsular head
