Mycoplasmal mastitis in dairy herds.

Mycoplasmal bovine mastitis is potentially a highly contagious disease that can cause severe economic problems in affected herds. The purchase of replacement heifers and cows are frequently the origin of mycoplasmal mastitis outbreaks in previously Mycoplasma-free herds. Purchased cows and heifers should be quarantined and tested for mycoplasmal mastitis before admission to the regular herd. Detection of Mycoplasma-infected cows by culture of milk is straightforward, although there are problems of sensitivity for its detection in milk samples that are inherent to the nature of the disease and …

[The construction of epidemic station in Leipzig until the beginning of the present century].

Among three large medieval foundations: St George's Hospital (opened in 1212 as a shelter for the homeless and terminally sick), St John's Hospital (first mentioned as a leprosarium in 1278) and St James' Hospital (probably opened at the end of 15 c. as a shelter for the terminally sick) only St George's and St James' survived the changeable fortunes of Leipzig (though the latter was at a number of occasions destroyed and rebuilt at a different site). Particularly at the times of war and epidemics they were used as field hospitals. E.G. St James' since 1566 was used as a quarantine for the pla…

A clash of epidemics: Impact of the COVID-19 pandemic response on opioid overdose.

Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) will have a lasting impact on public health. In addition to the direct effects of COVID-19 infection, physical distancing and quarantine interventions have indirect effects on health. While necessary, physical distancing interventions to control the spread of COVID-19 could have multiple impacts on people living with opioid use disorder, including impacts on mental health that lead to greater substance use, the availability of drug supply, the ways that people use drugs, treatment-seeking behaviors, and retention in care. The degree to which COVID-19 will im…

ENCEPHALITOZOON CUNICULI INFECTION IN A BLACK-FOOTED FERRET (MUSTELA NIGRIPES) KIT.

A 47-day-old black-footed ferret (Mustela nigripes) kit was found dead in June 2016. Histologic examination revealed pyogranulomatous tubulo … ribed as an opportunistic pathogen in immunocompromised individuals. The source of infection in the quarantine facility remains unknown, although two groups of frozen feeder rat kidneys tested positive for E. cuniculi genotype II via PCR. Feeding whole prey to various zoo taxa carries some potential disease transmission risk.

Regulatory systems for prevention and control of rabies, Japan.

Japan is one of the few rabies-free countries. Although 3 imported cases of human rabies were seen in 1970 and 2006, no other cases have been reported for approximately 50 years. The elimination of rabies in Japan is attributed to not only its geographic isolation but also to effective prevention and control measures, such as registration and vaccination of domestic dogs, required quarantine of susceptible imported animals, and national plans of action based on scientific research. Countermeasures against rabies have been upgraded; an improved management system for domestic dogs under the amen…

Introducing reptiles into a captive collection: the role of the veterinarian.

The successful introduction of reptiles into a captive collection depends on providing optimal husbandry and veterinary attention. An important role of the veterinarian in this process is the prevention of disease introduction, which may affect both the introduced and the resident animals. This review focuses on preventive veterinary medicine in reptiles, emphasising quarantine measures, disinfection and entry control for infectious agents. Agents discussed include those that are likely give rise to severe clinical problems on introduction into a collection of reptiles, or, in the case of Salm…

An epizootic of blindness and encephalitis associated with a herpesvirus indistinguishable from equine herpesvirus I in a herd of alpacas and llamas.

Blindness characterized by dilated unresponsive pupils and funduscopic evidence of varying degrees of vitritis, retinal vasculitis, retinitis, chorioretinitis, and optic neuritis developed in 21 alpacas and 1 llama within a 30-day period. The animals were part of a group of approximately 100 animals imported from Chile one year earlier. The animals had spent 6 months in quarantine and then, for the 6 months preceding the epizootic, were housed at an exotic animal import-export farm, where the disease developed. Four of the affected animals also had signs of neurologic dysfunction. A herpesviru…

Australia's notifiable disease status, 2009: annual report of the National Notifiable Diseases Surveillance System.

In 2009, 65 diseases and conditions were nationally notifiable in Australia. States and territories reported a total of 236,291 notifications of communicable diseases to the National Notifiable Diseases Surveillance System, an increase of 48% on the number of notifications in 2008. This increase was largely due to cases of influenza A(H1N1) pandemic 2009. In 2009, the most frequently notified diseases were vaccine preventable diseases (101,627 notifications, 43% of total notifications), sexually transmissible infections (73,399 notifications, 31% of total notifications), and gastrointestinal d

The Impact of Lockdown, Patient Classification, and the Large-Scale Case Screening on the Spread of the Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) in Hubei.

The coronavirus disease (COVID-19) which emerged in Wuhan, China, in December 2019, is widely controlled now in China. However, the global epidemic is still severe. To study and comment on Hubei's approaches for responding to the disease, the paper considered some factors such as suspected cases (part of them are influenza patients or common pneumonia patients, etc.), quarantine, patient classification (three types), clinically diagnosed cases, and lockdown of Wuhan and Hubei. After that, the paper established an SELIHR model based on the surveillance data of Hubei published by the Hubei Healt…

Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) in Americans Aboard the Diamond Princess Cruise Ship.

BACKGROUND: The Diamond Princess cruise ship was the site of a large outbreak of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). Of 437 Americans and their travel companions on the ship, 114 (26%) tested positive for severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2). METHODS: We interviewed 229 American passengers and crew after disembarkation following a ship-based quarantine to identify risk factors for infection and characterize transmission onboard the ship. RESULTS: The attack rate for passengers in single-person cabins or without infected cabinmates was 18% (58/329), compared with 63% …

Contrasting effects of the COVID-19 lockdown on urban birds' reproductive success in two cities.

The ubiquitous activity of humans is a fundamental feature of urban environments affecting local wildlife in several ways. Testing the influence of human disturbance would ideally need experimental approach, however, in cities, this is challenging at relevant spatial and temporal scales. Thus, to better understand the ecological effects of human activity, we exploited the opportunity that the city-wide lockdowns due to the COVID-19 pandemic provided during the spring of 2020. We assessed changes in reproductive success of great tits (Parus major) at two urban habitats affected strikingly diffe
