Racial discrimination accelerates age-related increases in serum neurofilament light chain among African American women: examination of change from midlife to older adulthood.

OBJECTIVES: Neurofilament light (NfL) is a biomarker of neurodegeneration that increases with age, yet the trajectory of this increase and its susceptibility to psychosocial stressors remain unclear. Racial discrimination is a psychosocial stressor disproportionately experienced by African Americans (AAs) that may accelerate neurodegenerative processes. METHODS: This study analyzed 15 years of longitudinal data from AA women to examine the relationship between racial discrimination reported at midlife and age-related changes in serum NfL (sNfL) levels. Because it is typically a chronic stress

"Dark skin girls are unworthy of protection": Black girls perceptions of colorism and its influence on psychological and sexual development.

OBJECTIVES: Black girls are at elevated sexual risk due to the combined effects of sexual development, adultification, gendered racist stere … ges and mistreatment that harm Black girls' development. Pain-Related Injustice Appraisals, Sickle Cell Stigma, and Racialized Discrimination in the Youth with Sickle Cell Disease: A Preliminary Investigation.

Despite the fact that perceptions of racialized discrimination, health-related stigma, and pain-related injustice have been associated with worse patient functioning, little is known about their unique relationships in Black youth living with sickle cell disease (SCD). In this study, we (1) examined the prevalence of perceptions of racialized discrimination, perceptions of health-related stigma, and pain-related injustice appraisals and (2) investigated how the aforementioned variables were uniquely related to functioning (i.e., functional disability, depressive, and anxiety symptoms) in Black

Everyday Discrimination Is Associated With Higher Odds of Hospitalizations Among Older African Americans.

BACKGROUND: Everyday discrimination-experiences of being treated unfairly based on background characteristics like race-is linked to poor physical and mental health throughout the lifespan. Whether more experiences of discrimination are associated with higher odds of being hospitalized in older African Americans has not been explored. METHODS: Community-dwelling participants from 3 longitudinal cohort studies (N = 446, age 65+ years) with discrimination scores and ≥12 months of linked Medicare claims were included. Hospitalizations were identified using Medicare fee-for-service claims, availa

The racialization of pit bulls: What dogs can teach us about racial politics.

Many have argued that discrimination against pit bulls is rooted in the breed's association with Black owners and culture. We theoretically and empirically interrogate that argument in a variety of ways and uncover striking similarities between the racialization of pit bulls and other racialized issues (e.g., poverty and crime) in public opinion and policy implementation. After detailing the reasons to expect pit bulls to be racialized as Black despite dog ownership in the U.S. generally being raced as white, the article shows: (1) Most Americans associate pit bulls with Black people. (2) Anti

Racial Discrimination and Alcohol Problems: Examining Interactions with Genetic Risk and Impulsivity among African American Young Adults.

Experiences of racial discrimination have been shown to increase risk for alcohol problems. Some individuals may be particularly vulnerable to the negative effects of racial discrimination. However, little research has examined interaction effects between racial discrimination and individual characteristics, such as genetic predispositions and personality, in relation to alcohol outcomes. This study examined whether genetic risk and dimensions of impulsivity moderate the association between racial discrimination and alcohol problems among African American young adults (n = 383, Mage = 20.65, S

Perceptions of healthcare accessibility and medical mistrust among Black women living with HIV in the USA.

Black women living with HIV in the USA frequently endure structural racism, racial biases and discrimination in healthcare that affect their access to care. To explore their experiences in healthcare settings as they relate to HIV-treatment accessibility and medical mistrust we used intersectionality and structural intersectionality as guiding frameworks. Four focus groups were conducted with 20 low-income Black women living with HIV in a large urban region. Using thematic analysis, we identified four themes: (1) multilevel stigma and discrimination; (2) medical mistrust of providers across mu…

Intersections of personal vs. collective trauma during the COVID-19 pandemic: the hijacking of the human imagination.

This paper explores how the deadly shadow of COVID-19 passing over the Earth constitutes a collective trauma that frequently opens up or 'triggers' un-remembered personal trauma, and it provides clinical examples of these intersections. The paper further explores how the human imagination, which we normally utilize to make meaning out of traumatic experience, can be hijacked by fear - leading to avoidance of suffering and to illusory formulations and alternative realities such as conspiracy theories. Alternatively, the imagination can be employed in more realistic and creative ways - leading t

Skin lightening: causes and complications.

Skin bleaching, also known as skin lightening, is the deliberate lightening of an individual's skin tone without medical supervision. The causes are complex, multifactorial and often intertwined, although the unifying themes centre around a belief that lighter skin denotes an individual of higher status, socioeconomic background or physical beauty, than their darker-skinned counterpart. Skin lightening is achieved using agents that block the production of melanin and often contain drugs such as hydroquinone, superpotent topical steroids or mercury. These drugs can cause serious local and syste

Testing invariance of ethnic-racial discrimination and identity measures for adolescents across ethnic-racial groups and contexts.

Ethnic-racial discrimination experiences, ethnic-racial identity (ERI) development, and attitudes toward other ethnic-racial group contact all make important contributions to individuals' health and well-being. Absent from the literature is systematic examination of whether these constructs may be measured equivalently for adolescents from different ethnic-racial groups living in different contexts. In 2 large ethno-racially diverse samples of high school students in the Southwestern (N = 2,136) and Midwestern (N = 1,055) United States, the current study tested invariance of 4 widely used meas

Collective ethnic-racial identity and health outcomes among African American youth: Examination of promotive and protective effects.

OBJECTIVES: Racial discrimination is associated with numerous negative health outcomes, including increased risk for depression and anxiety symptoms and substance use. Positive affect toward of one's ethnic or racial group (i.e., ethnic-racial identity affirmation) has been shown to buffer the negative effects of racial discrimination on health outcomes. The extent to which one believes his or her group is valued by others (i.e., positive collective ethnic-racial identity) has also been proposed to be protective. However, to date a limited body of research has examined the moderating effect of

[The biopolitical production "impaired" subjects within the scope of "Action T4" - a re-reading of "I accuse"].

The history of the Nazi "euthanasia programme" named "Aktion T4" has been examined from a biopolitical perspective for some time. However, these studies have not focused on the analytics of biopolitical practices of subjectivization as an essential element of the Foucaultian concept. The use of such a theoretical approach can be used in combination with new and substantial empirical research results. The Heidelberg DFG research programme evaluated the "T4" medical records statistically in order to conclusively determine which features had significant importance for selection by the "T4" expert

Cultural Adaptation of Overdose Education Programs: Recommendations from Black Americans with Lived Experience of Opioid and Stimulant Use.

Black Americans have experienced disproportionate overdose deaths due to structural barriers inflicted by systemic racism, particularly among individuals who co-ingest opioids and stimulants. Despite efforts to improve overdose prevention resources on a national level, Black Americans continue to have lower access to naloxone for overdose reversal, are less likely to have received naloxone training, and have lower engagement in other overdose prevention strategies. Community engaged and culturally informed approaches are needed to ensure equitable provision of overdose education and naloxone d…
