[Analysis of diagnostic X-Ray units in Poland in view of patients' exposure to ionizing radiation].

An analysis of diagnostic X-ray units in Poland is presented. The air-kerma on the X-ray table was measured for X-ray parameters used routinely during lumbo-sacral spine radiography in a standard patient. The measurements were performed using TLD made of lithium-fluoride. The dose received by patients in different X-ray departments is sometimes higher than two orders of magnitude from 0.14 mGy to 72.11 mGy for the same examination. The dose can be significantly reduced if the cassettes with amplyfying foils, made from rare earth components, are used.

Differential induction of transcriptionally active p53 following UV or ionizing radiation: defects in chromosome instability syndromes?

Accumulation of p53 protein was seen in the nuclei of mammalian cells following DNA damage caused by ultraviolet radiation (UV), X-ray, or a restriction enzyme. Promoters containing p53-binding sites show a dramatic transcriptional response to DNA damage. The p53 response to X-ray is rapid, reaching a peak at 2 hr after radiation, but is very transitory and reduced in magnitude compared with that seen in response to UV. We find no substantive defect in the p53 response of cells from ataxia telangiectasia or xeroderma pigmentosum complementation group A patients. In contrast, 2 out of 11 primar

Ionizing radiation and genetic risks. I. Epidemiological, population genetic, biochemical and molecular aspects of Mendelian diseases.

This paper reviews the currently available information on naturally occurring Mendelian diseases in man; it is aimed at providing a background and framework for discussion of experimental data on radiation-induced mutations (papers II and III) and for the estimation of the risk of Mendelian disease in human populations exposed to ionizing radiation (paper IV). Current consensus estimates indicate that a total of about 125 per 10(4) livebirths are directly affected by one or another naturally occurring Mendelian disease (autosomal dominants, 95/10(4); X-linked ones, 5/10(4); and autosomal reces

[Indices of RNA metabolism in the brain stem of rats under superlethal exposure to ionizing radiation].

A study was made of the content of hnRNA, nuclear poly(A) RNA and biosynthesis of rlnRNA in truncus cerebri of rats divided into 3 groups by the forced swimming test 6-8 min and 60 min after a short-term exposure to sparsely ionizing radiation of 100 Gy. The observed changes in the nuclear RNA metabolism can subsequently lead to the impairment of the synthesis of proteins required for normal functioning of CNS, and to the development of CNS syndrome.

Changes in morphine self-administration after exposure to ionizing radiation: evidence for the involvement of endorphins.

Recent findings have implicated endogenous opiates in radiation-induced behavioral change. The present experiment further investigated this hypothesis by observing alterations in morphine self-administration after irradiation. Under the presumption that the release of endogenous opiates would decrease the need for exogenously supplied morphine, we hypothesized that after radiation exposure morphine-experienced mice would self-administer less of the opiate. C57BL/6J mice had continuous access to two drinking flasks which contained either water or morphine in saccharine water. Irradiated mice dr

Evidence for endorphin-mediated cross-tolerance between chronic stress and the behavioral effects of ionizing radiation.

C57BL/6J mice exhibit a naloxone-reversible locomotor hyperactivity after exposure to ionizing radiation. These data implicate endogenous opiates in this radiogenic behavioral change. Similarly, endorphins mediate analgesia produced by chronic stress (e.g., foot shock or restraint) and levels of plasma Beta-endorphin are elevated following exposure to acute stress. Therefore, the present study sought to determine if behavioral cross-tolerance could be obtained between endorphin-producing stressors and radiation exposure. Repeated pretreatment with foot shock or restraint subsequently inhibited

Ionizing radiation-mediated dendritic cell maturation exacerbates inflammatory response of bone marrow mesenchymal stem cells and impairs osteogenesis in radiation-induced jaw injury.

BACKGROUND: Radiation-induced jaw injury is one of the most severe complications after radiotherapy for head and neck cancer, which can disrupt patients' health and quality of life. Although the direct target of inflammation and suppressed bone regeneration activity by ionizing radiation (IR) has been phenomenally observed, the underlying mechanisms and potential therapeutic targets remain blurred. Osteoimmunology emphasizes that dendritic cells (DCs) may contribute to bone diseases. METHODS: In this study, we assessed phenotypic and functional alterations of DCs in a radiation-induced jaw in

Investigation of the photoionization properties of pharmaceutically relevant substances by resonance-enhanced multiphoton ionization spectroscopy and single-photon ionization spectroscopy using synchrotron radiation.

The photoionization properties of the pharmaceutically relevant substances amantadine, diazepam, dimethyltryptamine, etomidate, ketamine, mescaline, methadone, and propofol were determined. At beamline U125/2-10m-NIM of the BESSY II synchrotron facility (Berlin, Germany) vacuum ultraviolet (VUV) photoionization spectra were recorded in the energy range 7.1 to 11.9 eV (174.6 to 104.2 nm), showing the hitherto unknown ionization energies and fragmentation appearance energies of the compounds under investigation. Furthermore, (1+1)-resonance-enhanced multiphoton ionization (REMPI) spectra of sele

Insights into the Impact of Low-Dose Ionizing Radiation on Neurodegenerative Disease Progression in In Vivo Models.

The effective treatment of neurodegenerative diseases (NDDs), such as Alzheimer's disease, Parkinson's disease, and amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, remains a critical challenge in modern medicine. Given the limitations of current therapies, alternative strategies to slow neurodegeneration are urgently needed. This study presents a critical review of the current evidence regarding low-dose ionizing radiation (IR) as a promising modality for modulating neurodegenerative processes. This study examines current experimental data on the effects of low-dose IR (LDIR) on cellular protective and compens

Increased Sensitivity to Ionizing Radiation in a Relevant Subset of Patients with Cancer and Systemic Lupus Erythematosus.

It has long been hypothesized that systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) increases radiosensitivity, but recent studies have yielded mixed results. We studied individual radiosensitivity in 70 individuals with SLE using chromosomal aberrations as biomarkers of radiosensitivity. In total, 33 patients with SLE and 37 patients with SLE and additional oncologic diseases were compared with healthy individuals and with patients with rectal and breast cancer. Individual radiosensitivity was assessed by ex vivo irradiation of G0 blood lymphocytes followed by three-color fluorescence in situ hybridization

[DNA damage to somatic cells of mice exposed to nonylphenol and to a combination of ionizing radiation and nonylphenol].

BACKGROUND: Nonylphenol (NP) has been found in daily used products reach in polyvinyl chloride (PVC). The main routes of human exposure are consumption of contaminated food and water. Radiation comes from natural and man-made sources, and is used in medicine, science and industry. Both agents are widely present in environment, therefore human exposure to their combined effect seems to be highly probable. OBJECTIVE: The aim of the study was the estimation of the effects of subchronic exposure of male mice to nonylphenol alone and in a combination with ionizing radiation on the induction of DNA

Involvement of Oct-1 in the regulation of CDKN1A in response to clinically relevant doses of ionizing radiation.

CDKN1A is a cyclin-dependent kinase inhibitor that plays a critical role in cell cycle checkpoint regulation. It is transcriptionally induced by TP53 (p53) following exposure to ionizing radiation (IR). Induction of CDKN1A after irradiation is closely related to IR-sensitivity of tumor cells, but the underlying mechanisms remain obscure because conventional reporter gene systems respond poorly to IR unless hyperlethal doses are used. Here, we performed a promoter analysis of the CDKN1A gene following irradiation with clinically relevant doses of IR using the adeno-associated virus-mediated rep

The study of the effects of low-level exposure to ionizing radiation using a bio-indicator system.

The object of the present study was to apply the high sensitivity of a botanical mutagenicity test (Tradescantia stamen-hair mutation bioassay), in "in situ" bioassays to determine the responses induced by the exposure to low levels of ionizing radiation. Mutagenesis was evaluated during 28 days, in an environment that presented gamma radiation exposure rates of 1.6 (control), 25.0 and 75.0 microR min(-1). From the results we observed that there was no linear response throughout the exposure time when compared mutagenic events and gamma radiation exposure rates were compared. The results obtai

[Neuropsychologic analysis of memory peculiarities in patients exposed to ionizing radiation as a result of the Chernobyl accident].

A sharp decrease in the ability to remember a number of random words was revealed in the main group in comparison with the control one. The interference tests showed significant abnormality. Word recall is much lower in main group than in the control group. Decrease in short-term and long-term visual memory was not displayed. The investigation has shown the presence of symptoms of the affected left temporal area in the form of acoustic-mnestic aphasia elements, signs of control disorder of higher nervous regulation, mnestic activity programming derangement, increase in the impediment to word t
