Collet-Sicard syndrome is a rare syndrome that involves paralysis of 9th to 12th cranial nerves. We report an uncommon case of schwannoma of the hypoglossal nerve in a 39-year-old woman presented with slurred speech, hoarse voice, and swallowing difficulty. Physical examination revealed decreased gag reflex on the right side, decreased laryngeal elevation, tongue deviation to the right side, and weakness of right trapezius muscle. MRI revealed a mass lesion in the right parapharyngeal space below the jugular foramen. The tumor was surgically removed. It was confirmed as hypoglossal nerve schwa

BACKGROUND: Whole-body vibration (WBV) induces reflex muscle activity and leads to increased muscle strength. However, little is known about the physiological mechanisms underlying the effects of whole-body vibration on muscular performance. Tonic vibration reflex is the most commonly cited mechanism to explain the effects of whole-body vibration on muscular performance, although there is no conclusive evidence that tonic vibration reflex occurs. The bone myoregulation reflex is another neurological mechanism used to explain the effects of vibration on muscular performance. Bone myoregulation

OBJECTIVE: Although the mixed orbicularis oculi muscle lacks the muscle spindles required to induce reflex contraction of its slow-twitch fibers, the mechanoreceptors in Müller's muscle function as extrinsic mechanoreceptors to induce reflex contraction. We hypothesize that strong stretching of these mechanoreceptors increases reflex contraction of the orbicularis oculi slow-twitch muscle fibers, resulting in blepharospasm.
METHODS: We examined a 71-year-old man with right blepharospasm and bilateral aponeurosis-disinserted blepharoptosis to determine whether the patient's blepharospasm was w

To clarify the neuro-muscular function of a lower extremity after reconstruction of anterior cruciate ligament (ACL), we studied the alteration of H reflex and Silent period (SP) from the soleus muscle in a patient with ACL reconstruction. Subject was an eighteen year-old male and high school basketball player after a reconstruction of right ACL. Recording of H reflex and SP was started at one month after operation, and ended at six months post operation with a test at every month. As a result of this study, the amplitude ratio of H/M(max) was increased at post four months after ACL reconstruc

Graded 30 s manoeuvers were used to elicit cardiovascular responses in conscious instrumented rabbits by applying pressures from 2.5 to 20 mm Hg (Valsalva Pressure, VP) to the animal's respiratory valve and to a sphygmomanometer cuff wrapped around its thorax and abdomen. In normal rabbits the Valsalva-like manoeuvers elicited VP-related rises in total peripheral resistance (TPR), heart rate and in right atrial pressure (RAP), VP-related fall in cardiac output (CO) and no change in mean arterial pressure (MAP). The rises in TPR and heart rate and the maintenance of MAP were reflexly mediated,

The spontaneously hypertensive rat (SHR) is the most commonly used model of attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), displaying the main symptoms of the disorder which are responsive to psychostimulant treatments. Research to date has focused on behavioural tests investigating functioning of the striatum or prefrontal cortex in these rats. However, there is now evidence that the superior colliculus, a structure associated with head and eye movements, may also be dysfunctional in ADHD. Therefore, the aim of this study was to investigate whether the SHR demonstrated impairment in collicu

HYPOTHESIS: To evaluate the effects of hyperandrogenism on otoacoustic emission levels and the medial olivocochlear reflex in adult female subjects.
BACKGROUND: Women have a hearing advantage over men. Otoacoustic emission levels tend to be higher in female subjects, in both newborns and adults. This discrepancy has been presumed to result from prenatal androgen exposure in male subjects.
METHODS: The study involved 37 polycystic ovary syndrome patients who were referred from the endocrinology department and 26 healthy volunteers. All participants who showed normal otoscopic findings, hearin

We describe a patient with swelling and pain in his right hand, which persisted for 1 year after minimal trauma. We think this represents a case of "clenched fist syndrome," a conversion disorder with unique somatic features that is easily mistaken for reflex sympathetic dystrophy syndrome. Included is a comparison of other psychological illnesses in which unusual physical findings involve the hand.

A 25-year-old man first noticed atrophy of right upper arm at the age of 15. This symptom progressed for the following 3 years and then became stable. As he noted difficulty in elevating his right arm above the shoulder level, at the age of 25 he was admitted to our hospital. On neurological examination, he had right scapula alata, moderate atrophy and weakness of right triceps muscle. Right triceps reflex was absent. Other neurological examinations were normal. Needle electromyography revealed neurogenic patterns in the muscles of the C5-T1 segments. Cervical MRI and CT myelography revealed m

The frequency specificity of the binaural interaction in brainstem auditory evoked potentials (BAEP) was investigated in ten normal-hearing young adults. A novel stimulus paradigm was devised to reduce the influence of the acoustic reflex (middle ear muscle contraction) on the BAEP, and to minimize the effect of variations in noise level. Sequences of six stimuli (rarefaction clicks or Gaussian-shaped tone pulses with carrier frequencies of 1, 2, 4 and 6 kHz) were periodically presented in the following order: right monaural, left monaural, binaural, left monaural, right monaural, binaural, wi

A 5-year-old female spayed domestic short hair cat was presented 2 weeks after a history of unknown trauma. The examination of the head revealed facial asymmetry. Vision tests, including menace responses, were negative. Pupillary light reflexes and dazzle reflexes were negative in both eyes. The posterior segment of the eye could not be visualised due to miosis, hyphaema and fibrin. Ultrasound and computed tomography were performed to assess the eyes in detail. Based on computed tomography and ultrasound, a right ocular globe rupture, left ocular lens luxation and rupture and bilateral vitreal

OBJECTIVE: We describe the case of a woman with Bell's Palsy-induced blepharospasm (BPIB) of the right eye that appeared simultaneously with a complete left facial nerve palsy. The involuntary spasm was relieved by passive lowering of the upper eyelid on the paretic side.
METHODS: The recovery curve of the blink reflex was evaluated on the non-paretic side in baseline conditions, after subcutaneous apomorphine and placebo administration and 8 months later, at recovery from the palsy.
RESULTS: We found increased recovery of the test-R2 responses at short interstimulus intervals at baseline, w

Suppression of transient-evoked otoacoustic emissions was recorded from 29 members of the Louisiana Philharmonic Orchestra and 28 non-musician control subjects matched for age and gender. Binaural broad band noise was used as the suppressor stimulus in a forward masking paradigm. Results showed musicians to have significantly more suppression than non-musicians for both the right and left ears. Two possible explanations for this functional difference between groups are that moderately loud music serves as a sound conditioning stimulus and that music can be a mechanism for strengthening central

The patient was a 26-year-old male who was noted to have asymmetry on the face, upper limbs, and trunk, and who showed no pursuit eye movements and no changes in the facial expression from birth. The patient developed transient global amnesia and was hospitalized. Neurological examination established atrophy of the right face, and left trunk involving the upper limb, and bilateral oculomotor and abducens nerve palsy. In auditory brainstem response, waves III to V were bilaterally obscured, and the blink reflex disclosed disturbances of peripheral facial nerve and the brainstem, suggesting deve

1. Ventricular tachycardia generates complex changes in baroreceptor input to the central nervous system: arterial baroreceptors are unloaded while cardiopulmonary receptors are stimulated. In humans with heart diseases, muscle sympathetic nerve activity increases during ventricular tachycardia. This suggests that arterial baroreceptor-mediated sympathoexcitation overrides cardiopulmonary receptor-mediated sympathoinhibition. However, the relative roles of each reflex are difficult to determine in humans. 2. We measured efferent renal sympathetic neural responses to simulated ventricular tachy

The exercise pressor reflex (EPR), a neurocirculatory control mechanism, is exaggerated in hypertensive humans and rats. Disease-related abnormalities within the afferent arm of the reflex loop, including mechano- and metabosensitive receptors located at the terminal end of group III/IV muscle afferents, may contribute to the dysfunctional EPR in hypertension. Using control (WKY) and spontaneous hypertensive (SHR) rats, we examined dorsal root ganglion (DRG) gene and protein expression of molecular receptors recognized as significant determinants of the EPR. Twelve lumbar DRGs (6 left, 6 right

Radiologic, endoscopic and histomorphologic studies have suggested the presence of a sphincter at the cecocolonic junction (CCJ), while some investigators have denied its existence. To investigate the physiologic activity at the CCJ, the right colon was exposed during right hemicolectomy for early colonic cancer in 11 patients (mean age 43.6+/-12.3 years; 8 men). Three manometric catheters were introduced through colotomy to be separately located in the cecum, CCJ and ascending colon. We determined the CCJ pressure response to cecal and colonic distension by means of a balloon filled with sali

UNLABELLED: Stab-like localized chest pain, aggravated by breathing, is compatible with pleuritic pain or with aching related to chest wall abnormalities. Local tenderness inflicted by palpation helps to differentiate pleuritic from musculoskeletal chest pain and serves as a principal accessory manoeuvre in the algorithm of chest pain evaluation. Herein, we report the case of a 27-year-old patient with pulmonary thromboembolism and right lower lobe consolidation/atelectasis. The patient presented with right-sided chest pain, radiating to the shoulder, related to pleural irritation, yet associa

A 44-year-old man was admitted, complaining of weakness of his left limbs. On admission, he was oriented and cooperative. He showed positive Barré sign only on the left leg. Deep tendon reflexes were unremarkable; pathological reflexes were negative. There was no cerebellar ataxia or sensory deficit. Immediately after admission, monoplegia of the left leg progressed. He was started on heparin infusion therapy. His paralysis had been resolved by the 5th day. MRI of the brain demonstrated an infarction involving the body of the corpus callosum, the right cingulate gyrus, and the right paracentra

BACKGROUND: The angles alpha and kappa are widely discussed for centring refractive procedures, but they cannot be determined with ophthalmic instruments. The purpose of this study is to investigate the Chang-Waring chord (position of the Purkinje reflex PI relative to the corneal centre) derived from an optical biometer before and after cataract surgery and to study the changes resulting from cataract surgery.
METHODS: The analysis was based on a large dataset of 1587 complete sets of preoperative and postoperative IOMaster 700 biometry measurements from two clinical centres, each containing
