PURPOSE: Albinism involves the mutation of one or more of the genes associated with melanin synthesis and has many ramifications for vision. This study focuses on the refractive implications of albinism in the context of emmetropization.
METHODS: Refractive, biometric, and visual acuity data were collected for a group of 25 albino individuals that included the following: 18 oculocutaneous (13 tyrosine positive, 5 tyrosine negative); 7 ocular (2 autosomal recessive, 5 sex-linked recessive). The paper considers the results of studies into an accommodative response in 75 patients with aphakia and pseudophakia following 3 months of cataract surgery. In pseudophakia, there is no objective recording of changes in both refraction and accommodation on producing an accommodative stimulus of varying size and at varying rates. An ocular survey was done on 6,153 children in 30 community schools in the Madang Province of Papua New Guinea over a two year period. Trachoma was diagnosed in 19.6% of subjects but was mild and asymptomatic in most. 9.6% of trachoma patients had moderate to severe disease, but only 5.3% required treatment. AIM: The FDA approved isotretinoin for moderate and severe nodulo-cystic acne, in which it proved effective. However, this misled the dermatologists into using isotretinoin for mild cases as well. Accommodation was studied in 449 diamond sorters aged 17 to 51 engaged in this work for 1 to 34 years with emmetropic and hypermetropic refraction. Questionnaires helped detect subjects who had no complaints of vision (group A) and those with asthenopia complaints (group B). The axial chromatic aberration of the eye was measured in 58 persons varying from 10 to 80 years of age. It was found that the chromatic aberration diminished significantly after the onset of presbyopia.
