The general health and nutritional status of 105 refugee children from Chile and the Middle East were examined shortly after the arrival in Stockholm. A chronic medical condition was present in 10% and there were clinical signs of caries in 57% of the children. Iron deficiency was found in 15% of Chileans and 6% of Middle Easterners, but no other nutritional deficiencies were discovered. Stunting and wasting was rare and a significant catch-up growth was observed in both groups in a follow-up 18 months after resettlement. Obesity was common in the Chilean group on arrival in Sweden and increas

Chadian refugees, most of whom are free from onchocerciasis, settled recently in a camp in a savanna area of the northern Cameroon where the prevalence is about 80% and the blindness rate is 4% of the adult population. In view of the risks of onchocerciasis facing the immigrants, the authors carried out an entomological survey in this region aimed at determining the modes of transmission and assessing the possibilities for the control of this disease. After a three-month survey in the study area, it appears clearly that 1) transmission takes place only during the rainy season, 2) the main vect…

This research evaluated a stress management, coping skills model of adjustment in the analysis of depression in a sample of Laotian refugees living in the southeastern United States. Stressful events and experiences during emigration and a lack of English proficiency were associated with depressive symptoms, while demographic variables and social support were not. English proficiency also significantly reduced the impact of acculturative stressors on depression, suggesting that language skill may act as a stress buffer in the new cultural environment.

BACKGROUND: The COVID-19 vaccination of Ukrainian refugees (UR) should be a top priority.
METHODS: Between May and July 2023, we conducted a cross-sectional study that surveyed consecutive UR registering at a refugee center in Zielona Gora, Poland, about COVID-19 vaccination and influencing factors. A self-administered, anonymous questionnaire was used.
RESULTS: Response rate was 83.4%. A total of 837 Ukrainians participated in the study, including 41.6% males. The largest age group (31.6%) was between 31 and 40 years old. Most respondents (61.2%) had previously lived in Ukrainian cities wit…

The global refugee crisis has exacerbated health disparities, particularly among middle-aged and older refugees, yet limited research exists on this vulnerable group, especially in low-income countries. This study investigates the predictors of health accessibility among middle-aged and older Afghan refugees in Pakistan in light of the social determinants of health, operationalized across four dimensions: health spending, health provider facilities, health information, and health communication. Using microdata from the 2022 Health Access and Utilization Survey (n = 423) at the household level,…

BACKGROUND: The mental health of refugees in transit-an inherently unstable and high-risk context-remains underresearched in the field of refugee research. This study aimed to address this gap by providing insights into the mental health of refugees in transit, identifying vulnerable subgroups, and documenting mental health trends over a seven-year period.
METHODS: Seven annually repeated cross-sectional studies with comparable methodologies were conducted, with data collected from 2017 to 2023. Official population data were used to weight the sample for each year by gender, age, and geograph…

BACKGROUND: Unintentional home injuries are a major public health burden in Canada, with racialized and newcomer communities experiencing disproportionate risk. However, limited research has examined the lived experiences and structural determinants of home-injury risks within these populations. Authors in this study examined how recent Afghan immigrants and refugees in Vancouver, British Columbia, experience and navigate home-injury risks within resettlement contexts.
METHODS: Using a community-based participatory research approach, we partnered with a Community Advisory Board, who were Afgh…

BACKGROUND: The Syrian conflict has displaced over 14 million people since 2011, with Lebanon hosting over 1.5 million Syrian refugees, the highest per capita worldwide. Displaced Syrians living in informal settlements face significant unmet surgical needs, yet data on their access to care remains limited. To identify potential surgical conditions among displaced Syrians in Lebanon and assess access to and barriers to surgical care.
METHODS: Cross-sectional, cluster-sample survey has been conducted over a period of 9 months (August 2020-April 2021). Household- and individual-level data were c…

INTRODUCTION: The ongoing Ukrainian conflict constitutes a grave humanitarian emergency, with refugees facing significant language and cultural barriers hindering access to health care. The UCRAID (Ukrainian Citizen and refugee electronic support in Respiratory diseases, Allergy, Immunology and Dermatology) initiative was launched to support Ukrainian refugees through the MASK-air® and CRUSE® apps. The UCRAID@Apulia study aimed to assess the feasibility of UCRAID via a joint medical and socio-linguistic approach.
METHODS: A multidisciplinary, cross-sectional study was conducted from July 2023…

Refugees and migrants experience disproportionately high rates of depression, anxiety, and post-traumatic stress disorder due to pre-migration trauma and post-resettlement challenges. Although the World Health Organization (WHO) QualityRights framework emphasizes person-centered and rights-based mental health care, its practical application in migrant and refugee mental health settings remains underexplored. This scoping review maps existing evidence on person-centered mental health care (PCC-MH) for migrants and refugees, identifies key barriers and facilitators, and describes existing interv…

BACKGROUND: The majority of the world's refugees and asylum-seekers live in transit settings. Despite this, little is known regarding the psychological factors that influence mental health in these contexts. Understanding the psychological mechanisms underlying psychopathology for refugees living in transit settings can inform policy and intervention. One promising mechanism that has been linked to psychopathology in trauma survivors is non-acceptance of positive and negative emotions.
METHODS: We investigated the temporal relationship between non-acceptance of positive emotions, non-acceptan…

PURPOSE: This study is the first to examine the prevalence of metabolic syndrome (MetS) and its four components (hypertension, dyslipidaemia, dysglycaemia and obesity) in a population of trauma-affected refugees. We also examined whether MetS was associated with age, sex and medication use.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Data were collected from a cohort of refugees with PTSD who participated in a randomised controlled trial (RCT) at the Competence Centre for Transcultural Psychiatry (CTP), Denmark. The cohort comprised 110 men and 109 women (mean age = 44 years, SD = 10.4) predominantly from the Mid…

To date, several biological alterations associated with the refugee status have been investigated. However, none of them has focused on the allostatic load (AL) index that is a collective measure of biological responses to stress. Therefore, the present study aimed to assess the AL index and its correlates in 60 Ukrainian refugees who migrated to Poland after the Russian invasion. The AL index was measured in 60 Ukrainian refugees and 50 controls matched for age and sex. It was based on sex-specific distributions of 15 biomarkers (cardiovascular markers, anthropometric measures, inflammatory m…

BACKGROUND: The health and well-being of refugees are critically compromised by harsh living conditions, which foster the emergence of infectious diseases and the misuse of antimicrobial agents. This multi-centre, cross-sectional, community-based study investigated the prevalence of urine carriage of bacteria and the associated antimicrobial resistance patterns of the isolates among Syrian refugees living in makeshift camps in Lebanon, an East Mediterranean country.
METHODS: We used multi-variable logistic regression models to identify the risk factors associated with bacteriuria in this vuln…

BACKGROUND: While treatment of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) in refugees is generally effective, many refugees remain symptomatic after treatment. Coping styles could be relevant to PTSD treatment response and as such may be a potential focus of PTSD treatment.
AIMS: The study aims to examine 1) if baseline coping styles are related to treatment response after EMDR therapy or stabilization, and 2) if coping styles change during these treatments.
METHOD: Seventy-two refugees with PTSD were randomly allocated to 12 hours of EMDR therapy or stabilization. A coping questionnaire (COPE-eas…
