Can N95 Respirators Be Reused after Disinfection? How Many Times?

The coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic has led to a major shortage of N95 respirators, which are essential for protecting healthcare professionals and the general public who may come into contact with the virus. Thus, it is essential to determine how we can reuse respirators and other personal protective equipment in these urgent times. We investigated multiple commonly used disinfection schemes on media with particle filtration efficiency of 95%. Heating was recently found to inactivate the virus in solution within 5 min at 70 °C and is among the most scalable, user-friendly methods

[RISK ASSESSMENT FOR AEROSOL INFECTION BY THE NEW CORONA VIRUS AND PROTECTION BY RESPIRATORS].

SARS-CoV-2 is dispersed from patients by talking, coughing and sneezing. The generated micro-droplets aerosols can travel up to 8 meters, stay suspended for long periods and preserve viral infectivity for a median of 2.7 hours. An unprotected person exposed to this cloud, might inhale a considerable amount of infectious viral doses, which will attach to the ACE 2 receptors on alveoli epithelium, resulting in infection. N95 respirators and surgical masks block 95% and 50-60% respectively of inhalable particles and protect the wearer from infection. Surgical masks and N95 without exhalation valv

Role of the K+-Cl- Cotransporter KCC2a Isoform in Mammalian Respiration at Birth.

In central respiratory circuitry, synaptic excitation is responsible for synchronizing neuronal activity in the different respiratory rhythm phases, whereas chloride-mediated inhibition is important for shaping the respiratory pattern itself. The potassium chloride cotransporter KCC2, which serves to maintain low intraneuronal Cl- concentration and thus render chloride-mediated synaptic signaling inhibitory, exists in two isoforms, KCC2a and KCC2b. KCC2 is essential for functional breathing motor control at birth, but the specific contribution of the KCC2a isoform remains unknown. Here, to add

Ultraviolet germicidal irradiation of influenza-contaminated N95 filtering facepiece respirators.

BACKGROUND: Safe and effective decontamination and reuse of N95 filtering facepiece respirators (FFRs) has the potential to significantly extend FFR holdings, mitigating a potential shortage due to an influenza pandemic or other pandemic events. Ultraviolet germicidal irradiation (UVGI) has been shown to be effective for decontaminating influenza-contaminated FFRs. This study aims to build on past research by evaluating the UVGI decontamination efficiency of influenza-contaminated FFRs in the presence of soiling agents using an optimized UVGI dose. METHODS: Twelve samples each of 15 N95 FFR m

The Connection of Life with Respiration: Edmund Goodwyn's unexplored treasure of cardiopulmonary physiology.

The advent of artificial ventilation was largely sparked by the popular belief that drowning and other causes of asphyxia could induce death-like states known as suspended animation. While the mystical nature of such states befuddled some physicians into the early 1900s, an English medical student by the name of Edmund Goodwyn (1756-1829) published a thesis in 1786, which demonstrated that suspended animation was simply the physical manifestation of extreme hypoxia. Goodwyn's work advanced one of the earliest arguments in favor of artificial ventilation for the treatment of asphyxia over alter

Microbial Community Response of an Organohalide Respiring Enrichment Culture to Permanganate Oxidation.

While in situ chemical oxidation is often used to remediate tetrachloroethene (PCE) contaminated locations, very little is known about its influence on microbial composition and organohalide respiration (OHR) activity. Here, we investigate the impact of oxidation with permanganate on OHR rates, the abundance of organohalide respiring bacteria (OHRB) and reductive dehalogenase (rdh) genes using quantitative PCR, and microbial community composition through sequencing of 16S rRNA genes. A PCE degrading enrichment was repeatedly treated with low (25 μmol), medium (50 μmol), or high (100 μmol) perm…

Development of three methods for extracting respiration from the surface ECG: a review.

BACKGROUND: Respiration rate (RR) is a critical vital sign that can be monitored to detect acute changes in patient condition (e.g., apnea) and potentially provide an early warning of impending life-threatening deterioration. Monitoring respiration signals is also critical for detecting sleep disordered breathing such as sleep apnea. Additionally, analyzing a respiration signal can enhance the quality of medical images by gating image acquisition based on the same phase of the patient's respiratory cycle. Although many methods exist for measuring respiration, in this review we focus on three E…

[Levels of exposure to respirable fibres at worksites for abatement of compact and friable asbestos].

BACKGROUND: Starting from a project aimed at assessing the carcinogenic risk in some industrial sectors covered by Local Health Authority No.1 (LHA) in Perugia (USL Umbria1, Italian acronym), worksites for abatement of materials containing asbestos (MCA) were examined in order to estimate respirable fibres exposure levels in workers. Abatement work is, indeed, a fast developing sector, but is not free from asbestos risks in the long-term, particularly carcinogenic risks; this kind of work therefore requires maximum effort in respecting prevention standards prescribed in the relative legislatio

An imaging method for oxygen distribution, respiration and photosynthesis at a microscopic level of resolution.

Biological samples are far from homogeneous, with complex compartmentation being the norm. Major physiological processes such as respiration do not therefore occur in a uniform manner within most tissues, and it is currently not possible to image its gradients in living plant tissues. A compact fluorescence ratiometric-based device is presented here, consisting of an oxygen-sensitive foil and a USB (universal serial bus) microscope. The sensor foil is placed on the sample surface and, based on the localized change in fluorescence signal over time, information about the oxygen consumption (resp…

[Change in sensitivity of the central respiration mechanism in the 21-hour bedrest conditions].

The investigation was aimed at studying the mechanisms for change in the respiration center sensitivity in consequence of 21-hr bed rest with head-end tilted at -15 degrees combined with liquid loss (lasix, 20 ml) and recovery (IV infucol and glucose). Time of maximal breath-holding, capillary and venous O2 and CO2 pressure values were measured in the baseline data collection period, during and shortly after BR. Data analysis showed that extension of the maximal breath-holding time both during inspiration and expiration was statistically significant in the initial 10 minutes of tilting. Compar…

Cheyne-Stokes respiration is not related to quality of life or sleepiness in heart failure.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: The effects of central sleep apnea in Cheyne-Stokes respiration on sleep-related symptoms and quality of life are not very well established. We aimed to investigate whether Cheyne-Stokes respiration is related to health-related quality of life. We also studied the impact on daytime sleepiness and nocturnal dyspnea. METHODS: Included were 203 consecutive patients, stabilized following in-hospital treatment for decompensated congestive heart failure. They underwent overnight cardiorespiratory sleep apnea recordings in hospital and answered a set of questions on symptoms and…

Method for contamination of filtering facepiece respirators by deposition of MS2 viral aerosols.

A droplet/aerosol loading chamber was designed to deliver uniform droplets/aerosols onto substrates. An ultrasonic nebulizer was used to produce virus-containing droplets from artificial saliva to emulate those from coughing and sneezing. The operating conditions were determined by adjusting various parameters to achieve loading density and uniformity requirements. The count median diameter and mass median diameter were 0.5-2 and 3-4 μm, respectively, around the loading location when 35% relative humidity was applied. The average loading density was ∼2×103 plaque-forming units/cm2 for 5-min lo

Changes in respiration mediate changes in fear of bodily sensations in panic disorder.

The purpose of the study was to examine whether changes in pCO(2) mediate changes in fear of bodily sensation (as indexed by anxiety sensitivity) in a bio-behavioral treatment for panic disorder that targets changes in end-tidal pCO(2). Thirty-five panic patients underwent 4 weeks of capnometry-assisted breathing training targeting respiratory dysregulation. Longitudinal mediation analyses of the changes in fear of bodily symptoms over time demonstrated that pCO(2), but not respiration rate, was a partial mediator of the changes in anxiety sensitivity. Results were supported by cross lag panel…

Toward understanding the risk of secondary airborne infection: emission of respirable pathogens.

Certain respiratory tract infections are transmitted through air. Coughing and sneezing by an infected person can emit pathogen-containing particles with diameters less than 10 microm that can reach the alveolar region. Based on our analysis of the sparse literature on respiratory aerosols, we estimated that emitted particles quickly decrease in diameter due to water loss to one-half the initial values, and that in one cough the volume in particles with initial diameters less than 20 microm is 60 x 10(-8) mL. The pathogen emission rate from a source case depends on the frequency of expiratory

Provocation of ventricular ectopy by cheyne-stokes respiration in patients with heart failure.

STUDY OBJECTIVES: Previous reports have suggested an association between Cheyne-Stokes respiration with central sleep apnea (CSR-CSA) and ventricular ectopy, but there has been relatively little evidence of a cause-effect relationship. The objective of this study was to determine whether CSR-CSA directly provokes ventricular ectopy and, if so, whether it is associated with any particular phase of the CSR-CSA breathing cycle. DESIGN: We compared the frequency of ventricular premature beats (1) between the apneic and hyperpneic phases of CSR-CSA, (2) between periods of CSR-CSA and periods of re…

Amphibian respiration and olfaction and their relationships: from Robert Townson (1794) to the present.

The present review examines the developments in the elucidation of the mechanisms of amphibian respiration and olfaction. Research in these two areas has largely proceeded along independent lines, despite the fact that ventilation of the nasobuccopharyngeal cavity is a basic element in both functions. The English naturalist Robert Townson demonstrated, in the 1790s, that amphibians, contrary to general belief, ventilated the lungs by a pressure-pump mechanism. Frogs and other amphibians respire by alternatively dilating and contracting the buccopharyngeal cavity. During dilatation, with the mo…
