Introduction: Lower airway malacia (LAM) is characterized by a reduction in the cross-sectional luminal area during quiet respiration. There is no gold standard diagnostic test; however, flexible fiberoptic bronchoscopy (FFB) is most frequently utilized. The exact prevalence and incidence of LAM are unknown. This study aimed to determine the prevalence rates of pediatric patients diagnosed with LAM, offer a detailed understanding of their demographic and clinical characteristics, and investigate distinctions between two specific types of LAM, namely, tracheomalacia (TM) and bronchomalacia (BM)

Forty four patients with tuberculous pleurisy or pulmonary tuberculosis complicated by pleurisy were examined. The examination was made before or in the first days after antituberculous chemotherapy. Along with routine methods used to examine patients with tuberculosis, a complex study of external respiration function involved spirometry, air flow/volume on forced expiration, body plethismography, esophageal probing of respiratory mechanics. Analysis indicated that RD was significantly more frequently observed in tuberculous pleurisy concurrent with infiltrative tuberculosis (81%) than in the

Sleep-disordered breathing (SDB) has a higher prevalence in patients with heart failure than in the general middle-aged population. Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA), one of the forms of SBD, promotes poorly controlled hypertension, coronary events, and atrial fibrillation events that can lead to acutely decompensated heart failure (ADHF), and evidence suggests that untreated OSA increases mortality in patients with heart failure. Cheyne-Stokes respiration and central sleep apnea (CSA) have long been associated with heart failure and, in many patients, can coexist with OSA. In this article, we pro

We report a case of anesthesia for elective outpatient third molar extraction in a juvenile with Leigh disease, a progressive neurodegenerative disorder related to respiratory chain deficiency. This syndrome usually presents in infancy and is characterized by nervous system dysfunction and respiratory abnormalities. Anesthesia has been reported to aggravate respiratory symptoms and frequently precipitate respiratory failure. Preoperative swallowing difficulty or respiratory symptoms should be carefully diagnosed, because they can be a warning sign of postoperative complications or mortality. A

Background: Novel coronavirus disease (COVID-19) morbidity is not restricted to the respiratory system, but also affects the nervous system. Non-invasive neuromodulation may be useful in the treatment of the disorders associated with COVID-19. Objective: To describe the rationale and empirical basis of the use of non-invasive neuromodulation in the management of patients with COVID-10 and related disorders. Methods: We summarize COVID-19 pathophysiology with emphasis of direct neuroinvasiveness, neuroimmune response and inflammation, autonomic balance and neurological, musculoskeletal and neur

The hyoid bone is a small horseshoe-shaped bone located between the mandible and the shoulder girdle. It is classified as a sesamoid bone which means it is a freely floating bone. However, it is anything but freely floating. The hyoid bone is a vestigial structure and is found as part of the tongue in lower animal forms. The hyoid bone is attached to the base of the skull, the mandible, the tongue, the larynx, and the scapular belt. Even though the hyoid bone is an important structure, it has not received the attention that it deserves. It participates in the function of speech, respiration, m

Sixteen patients with painful tender swelling in the region of the sternocostal joint (SCJ) are reported and analysed against the background of a review of 106 previously reported patients with Tietze's syndrome. Seven patients fulfilled all the diagnostic criteria for Tietze's syndrome. The radiographic findings and/or the history of these patients suggested that local strain generated by respiration is a pathogenetic factor. Nine patients had a systemic arthritic disorder, skin disease, or psoriasis in their family. They differed from the 7 patients with local involvement and from those revi

Reported findings regarding sleep and sleep disorders in the elderly often conflict. Differences in results across studies may arise from selection of subjects, definitions and recording conditions. Our purpose was to test a method to study elderly, both healthy and demented, under the most natural conditions, without disturbing a fragile sleep. Using clinical parameters and a non-disturbing recording method, we evaluated sleep quality in patients with carefully diagnosed dementia and compared the results to a group of healthy subjects between 50 and 70 years of age. Healthy subjects awoke les

Sleep-disordered breathing, broadly characterized by obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) and central sleep apnea (CSA), is an increasingly recognized public health burden. OSA, consisting of apneas or hypopneas associated with respiratory efforts in the face of upper airway narrowing or collapse, is a common disorder that can be effectively treated with continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP). OSA not only results in daytime sleepiness and impaired executive function, but also has been implicated as a possible cause of systemic disease, particularly of the cardiovascular system. CSA, which may co

Although breathing seems like a simple action, many individuals encounter difficulties under ever-changing and complex circumstances, which can become increasingly problematic as the individuals age. In this Review, we comprehensively assess the ageing respiratory system. We begin with the physiological structural changes and their effect on lung function associated with ageing, before exploring the genetic and molecular factors that contribute to the loss of respiratory function with age. Defining how biological ageing manifests in the respiratory system and understanding disease-driven hallm

Spinocerebellar ataxia type 1 is a neurodegenerative disease characterized by motor dysfunction and premature death usually from compromised swallowing and respiration. Using plethysmography, we characterized respiration in the conditional f-ATXN1146Q/2Q SCA1 model. We found a progressive elevation of baseline respiration that impairs ability of f-ATXN1146Q/2Q mice to increase breathing during challenge. To delineate regions contributing to respiratory dysfunction, f-ATXN1146Q/2Q mice were crossed with Nestin-Cre and Acta1-Cre mice, respectively. Respiration improved by removing mATXN1 from ne

Anemia may increase the risk of tissue hypoxia in preterm infants. This could lead to respiratory center depression and an increased risk for apnea. Heart rate and breathing pattern were recorded in 30 preterm infants (gestational age 30.0 +/- 2.3 weeks, postnatal age 46.6 +/- 20.8 days, and weight 1,438 +/- 266 g) before and after a transfusion of 10 mL/kg of packed RBCs. All infants were stable clinically, breathing room air, and free of prolonged apneic episodes. After transfusion, hematocrit levels increased from 27.0% +/- 2.5% to 35.8% +/- 4.7%. Heart rate decreased from 157.2 +/- 13.6 be

This analysis of thirteen cases of lower airway foreign body aspiration in children reveals a high incidence of aspiration into the left main bronchus, and an increased incidence in older children. Early indentification of nonradio opaque foreign bodies such as food and plastic toys is difficult in the absence of a positive history. Suggestions are offered for prevention, early detection, and treatment.

Type II Arnold-Chiari malformation (ACM) is an abnormality in which the cerebellum, pons, and medulla oblongata are displaced downward into the spinal cord. Type II ACM is often complicated by respiratory depression, sleep-disordered breathing, and deglutition disorder as a result of medullary dysfunction and impairment of the lower cranial nerves. Bending and stretching of the neck is restricted, and anesthetic management is problematic in patients with the disorder. We performed dental treatment twice under intravenous sedation in a patient with intellectual disability with type II ACM compl

A histiocytic proliferative disorder was identified in six closely related Bernese mountain dogs. Clinical signs included anorexia, weight loss, stertorous respiration, and conjunctivitis with marked chemosis. Multiple cutaneous nodules were distributed over the entire body but were especially prevalent in the scrotum, nasal apex, nasal planum, and eyelids. Lesions consisted of perivascular infiltrates of large histiocytes as well as minor populations of lymphocytes, neutrophils, and eosinophils. Histiocytes were further characterized by enzyme histochemistry and electron microscopy. Necropsy
