INTRODUCTION: Mucocutaneous involvement in systemic amyloidosis occurs in 29 to 40 p. 100 of cases. Nail abnormalities are infrequent in AL amyloidosis. We report an original case of AL amyloidosis associated with cutaneous and integument alterations and scleroderma-like infiltration of the face.
CASE REPORT: A 73 year-old woman was hospitalized because of weight loss and asthenia. She had been treated 4 years earlier with chemotherapy for a IgG-type multiple myeloma with complete resolution of the underlying monoclonal gammapathy. Cutaneous examination showed nail dystrophy of all fingernail

OBJECTIVE: To describe a unique case of scleroderma (SSc) presenting as multiple keloidal nodules and early-onset osteoarthritis (OA), and to summarize the clinical and serological data for 13 similar patients reported in the English literature since 1966.
METHODS: MEDLINE review of the literature over a 35-year period (1966-2002) revealed 13 cases of nodular SSc. We describe a case of nodular SSc in a 40-year-old African-American male with localized SSc who developed progressive skin thickening and keloidal nodules on the arms, hands, chest, abdomen, and thighs with advanced osteoarthritis o

Linear scleroderma "en coup de sabre" (LScs) is associated with neurological complications, the pathogenesis of which is uncertain. A 27 year old woman is reported on who developed epilepsy and focal neurological signs in association with LScs. Brain MRI demonstrated predominantly ipsilateral relapsing and remitting grey and white matter lesions. Analysis of CSF and pathology obtained at brain biopsy provides evidence of an inflammatory process which may be amenable to immunosuppressive treatment.

Although scleromyxedema has been associated with neoplasm in rare instances, the literature showed no evidence of association with seminoma. We report a 43-year-old man who presented with a scleromyxedema and relapsed seminoma. The skin lesions of scleromyxedema cleared completely on treatment of seminoma with chemotherapy.

Linear scleroderma 'en coup de sabre' is characterized by atrophy and furrowing of the skin of the frontoparietal region. In most cases it occurs as a single, paramedian line that may be associated with hypoplasia of underlying structures and hemiatrophy of the face. Rarely, lesions form two lines, either both on the same side or bilaterally. We describe an 18-year-old male with an unusual tri-linear pattern of scleroderma 'en coup de sabre' following Blaschko's lines.

A 38-year-old woman with systemic lupus erythematosus had developed a cutaneous lesion of linear scleroderma on the forehead 4 years after the diagnosis of lupus erythematosus. This case of coexistence of the two diseases can be regarded as a clinical variant of the connective tissue disease-overlap syndrome.

A case of melorheostosis with osteopoikilosis and linear scleroderma is reported. The authors emphasize the rarity of the disease, the complexity of the therapeutic approach to the patient.

In linear scleroderma, a rare form of circumscribed scleroderma, the lesions are arranged in a band-shaped linear distribution and both the superficial and the deeper layers of the skin are attached to the underlying structures. This disease must principally be differentiated from eosinophilic fasciitis (Shulman's syndrome). On the basis of the clinical and laboratory data, systemic scleroderma can be excluded in nearly all the cases. Nevertheless, patients with linear scleroderma might develop systemic scleroderma or other systemic diseases of the connective tissue even after years. As a cons

Systemic sclerosis is a rare systemic autoimmune disease characterized by microvascular impairment and fibrosis of the skin and other organs with poor outcomes. Toxic causes may be involved. We reported the case of a 59-year-old woman who developed an acute systemic sclerosis after two doses of adjuvant chemotherapy by docetaxel and cyclophosphamide for a localized hormone receptor + human epithelial receptor 2-breast cancer. Docetaxel is a major chemotherapy drug used in the treatment of breast, lung, and prostate cancers, among others. Scleroderma-like skin-induced changes (morphea) have bee

Antibodies from 5 patients with systemic sclerosis reacted with an antigen localized to the metaphase chromatin, the cleavage furrow and the midbody of anaphase and telophase HEp-2 cells. The titer of antimidbody antibodies ranged from 1:160 to 1:1280. Four patients had systemic sclerosis and one had idiopathic Raynaud's phenomenon. In situ biochemical characterization of the antigen revealed that it was resistant to DNase I, micrococcal nuclease and RNase A, but was sensitive to trypsin treatment. The antigen remained insoluble in 400 mM acetic acid but was extracted from the cells with 400 m

Immune-driven fibrotic skin diseases, including scleroderma/systemic sclerosis (SSc) and chronic graft-versus-host disease (GVHD), cause skin stiffening that has a major impact on patient quality of life and associated patient mortality. Therapies to improve sclerotic skin resulting from these diseases are largely ineffective. We previously showed that epiregulin (EREG), a dendritic cell type 3-derived epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) ligand, is elevated in the skin and lungs of patients with SSc and required for the maintenance of skin fibrosis. Here, we developed a fully human anti-ER
