The effect of two synthetic corticosteroids on the cysticerci of Taenia ovis in sheep has been investigated. Dexamethasone given from four days before infection had no effect on the number of cysticerci recovered but did enhance their survival. When betamethasone was used there was an increase in the number of cysts compared with controls. Corticosteroids given for 12 days after infection did not increase the number of viable cysticerci recovered at autopsy three months later but when treatment was continued until the time of autopsy, a very high proportion of cysticerci were viable.

Squamous-cell carcinoma of the vulva was observed in 3.1% of Merino ewes up to 3 years old. It is suggested that this high incidence of tumours was related to increased exposure of the perineal region to direct sunlight. It occurred in a group of sheep where short docking of tails and a radical surgical procedure to reduce cutaneous myiasis (Mules' operation) both led to greater exposure of the perineal region. The perineum was also subject to scarring from the operation and to application of organophosphate compounds to control cutaneous myiasis.

The test of spontaneous rosettes with sheep erythrocytes was used to estimate the rosette forming lymphocytes (RFL) in the peripheral blood from normal subjects and from patients with various lymphocytoses. Fluorescence microscopy was employed to study Dictyocaulus infection in 15 experimentally infected lambs each given 2000 D. filaria larvae. Studied were also the sera of 10 control lambs and of 20 sheep and goats infected with other helminths. Antibodies were established after the 14th day in 53 per cent of the lambs, the 20th day in 86.6 per cent, and the 27th day in all animals infected with the parasite.
