Ontogenetic changes in magnitudes of integration in the macaque skull.

OBJECTIVES: Magnitudes of morphological integration may constrain or facilitate craniofacial shape variation. The aim of this study was to analyze how the magnitude of integration in the skull of Macaca fascicularis changes throughout ontogeny in relation to developmental and/or functional modules. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Geometric morphometric methods were used to analyze the magnitude of integration in the macaque cranium and mandible in 80 juvenile and 40 adult M. fascicularis specimens. Integration scores in skull modules were calculated using integration coefficient of variation (ICV) of …

Morphometric characteristics of anencephalic skulls - A comparative study.

Anencephaly is the most severe form of a neural tube defect resulting from the incomplete occlusion of the anterior neuropore in the fourth week of development and associated with a severely underdeveloped brain mass. As desmal ossification of the neurocranium is induced by the presence of soft tissues (brain), no bone develops as direct consequence of the missing brain. The cranial base, by contrast, is formed by chondral ossification, which is genetically determined, and thus present also in anencephaly. Morphometric characteristics of anencephalic skulls, however, have not yet been investig…

Severe skull deformity in a child with shunted hydrocephalus.

INTRODUCTION: We report a rare case of skull deformity in a child with shunted hydrocephalus. CASE REPORT: A 2.5-year-old boy with a history of cerebral palsy (CP), shunted hydrocephalus and seizures was admitted to our children's hospital with status epilepticus. This was initially controlled with anesthesia. He referred to us intubated. Head examination found a skull deformity (brachycephaly). Head CT revealed a remarkable deformity and bilateral chronic subdural hematomas. MRI demonstrated voluminous extra-axial masses over the cerebral convexities with high signal on T1 and T2 sequences i…

The Evolution of Modern Treatment for Depressed Skull Fractures.

Surgery for depressed skull fractures has developed over centuries to attain the consensus approaches currently used. This review outlines the last 200 years of development of surgical approaches to closed and open depressed skull fractures, fractures involving dural venous sinuses and ping-pong fractures involving infants. Early reports often dealt with only closed and open depressed skull fractures. However, experience has shown that each fracture category merits its own management strategies. Accepted approaches are based on observation only; there is little to no scientific evidence to sup…

The cochlea in skull base surgery: an anatomy study.

OBJECTIVE The object of this study was to examine the relationships of the cochlea as a guide for avoiding both cochlear damage with loss of hearing in middle fossa approaches and injury to adjacent structures in approaches directed through the cochlea. METHODS Twenty adult cadaveric middle fossae were examined using magnifications of ×3 to ×40. RESULTS The cochlea sits below the floor of the middle fossa in the area between and below the labyrinthine segment of the facial nerve and greater petrosal nerve (GPN) and adjacent to the lateral genu of the petrous carotid. Approximately one-third of

Properties and architecture of the sperm whale skull amphitheatre.

The sperm whale skull amphitheatre cradles an enormous two-tonne spermaceti organ. The amphitheatre separates this organ from the cranium and the cervical vertebrae that lie in close proximity to the base of the skull. Here, we elucidate that this skull amphitheatre is an elastic, flexible, triple-layered structure with mechanical properties that are conjointly guided by bone histology and the characteristics of pore space. We contend that the amphitheatre will flex elastically to equilibrate forces transmitted via the spermaceti organ that arise through diving. We find that collisions from sp…

Forces transmission to the skull in case of mandibular impact.

BACKGROUND: Forensic investigations have been reported regarding the loss of consciousness and cardiac arrests resulting from direct mandible impact. However, the mechanisms by which the forces are transferred to the skull through direct mandible impact remain unclear. We conducted a study regarding direct mandible impact on the level of energy required to create a mandible fracture and on the energy dispersion phenomenon to the skull and to the brain. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This study combines an experimental and numerical approach. Mandible strike was studied using experimental trials perfo…

Copper Beaten Skull! Can It be a Usual Appearance?

'Copper beaten' skull refers to the prominent convolutional markings seen in multiple bones of the skull. Underlying cause is thought to be related to increased intracranial pressure resulting from such processes as craniosynostosis, obstructive hydrocephalus and/or intracranial masses. However, the copper beaten appearance of the skull has poor sensitivity in detecting increased intracranial pressure as such an appearance can also be seen in normal patients. In this article, we have reported a case of a 5 years old child with classical features of beaten silver skull. How to cite this article…

[Skull fracture and cephalhematoma in a newborn--a case report].

Skull fractures and cephalhematoma in newborns belong to the group of birth injuries of the head and neck, accounting for 11.4 to 15% of the total number of birth injuries. We presented a fracture of the parietal bones in a newborn, associated with parietal cephalhematoma. The newborn had transient and mild neurological symptoms: vomiting and changes in muscle tone. Clinical examination confirmed a positive "ping-pong" phenomen, craniogram confirmed the fracture of parietal bones and shown cephalhematoma, as well as ultrasound (US) examinations of the brain showed peri-interventricular bleedin…

Frontal sinus drainage in Thai adult skulls.

OBJECTIVE: To study the pattern of the nasofrontal drainage in relation to the neighboring anatomical structures in adult Thai cadavers. MATERIAL AND METHOD: The anterior aspect of the frontal bone of the embalmed half-head was drilled to identify the presence of the frontal sinus i.e. 40 from only one side of each cadaver were chosen. A silicone base and catalyst were combined then injected into the frontal sinus, which flowed into the nasal cavity through its natural ostium, thereby creating a cast of the nasofrontal connection(s). After allowing five minutes for the silicone to set, the to
