The social evolution of sleep: sex differences, intragenomic conflicts and clinical pathologies.

Sleep appears to be essential for most animals, including humans. Accordingly, individuals who sacrifice sleep are expected to incur costs and so should only be evolutionarily favoured to do this when these costs are offset by other benefits. For instance, a social group might benefit from having some level of wakefulness during the sleeping period if this guards against possible threats. Alternatively, individuals might sacrifice sleep in order to gain an advantage over mate competitors. Here, we perform a theoretical analysis of the social evolutionary pressures that drive investment into sl

Evaluating the Validity of Sleep Disturbance Scale for Children in Attention-deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder.

INTRODUCTION: Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is prevalent in children and strongly associated with sleep disorders, emphasizing the clinical importance of diagnosing sleep disorders in these patients. Here, we aimed to assess the validity of the sleep disturbance scale for children (SDSC) in children with ADHD. METHODS: This cross-sectional study, conducted between 2020 and 2021, involved 204 children diagnosed with ADHD and 202 healthy children as controls. Participants were recruited using convenience sampling from schools, community centers, and pediatric clinics. Demograp

Sleep characteristics in milk-intolerant infants.

We have shown that there is a relation between allergy to cow's milk and chronic sleeplessness in infants. In the present report we describe the sleep characteristics of children with allergy-related sleep disruption. We compared the polygraphic characteristics of nine infants studied before and after the exclusion of milk from the diet. The infants had a mean age of 18.3 +/- 13.3 and 25.4 +/- 12.7 weeks at the first and the second recording, respectively. Diagnosis of allergy was based on clinical observation. Sleep normalized after milk was withdrawn, deteriorated after a challenge with milk

Insights from studying human sleep disorders.

Problems with sleep are one of the commonest reasons for seeking medical attention. Knowledge gained from basic research into sleep in animals has led to marked advances in the understanding of human sleep, with important diagnostic and therapeutic implications. At the same time, research guided by human sleep disorders is leading to important basic sleep concepts. For example, sleep may not be a global, but rather a local, brain phenomenon. Furthermore, contrary to common assumptions, wakefulness, rapid eye movement (REM) and non-REM sleep are not mutually exclusive states. This striking real

Rhythmic feet movements while falling asleep.

During the wake-sleep transition and sleep, diverse motor phenomena such as hypnagogic foot tremor may occur in the lower extremities. We investigated the relevance of this phenomenon in 375 consecutive subjects examined polysomnographically in a sleep disorders center. Rhythmic feet movements while falling asleep (RFM) were found in 28 subjects (7.5%). RFM occurred mostly as single, short series with a duration of between 10 and 15 seconds. They had a high night-to-night variability and were detected as rhythmic, oscillating movements of the whole foot or toes. Surface electromyographic (EMG)

Respiratory motor activity: influence of neuromodulators and implications for sleep disordered breathing.

Sleep, especially rapid-eye-movement sleep, causes fundamental modifications of respiratory muscle activity and control mechanisms, modifications that can predispose individuals to sleep-related breathing disorders. One of the most common of these disorders is obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) that affects approximately 4% of adults. OSA is caused by repeated episodes of pharyngeal airway obstruction that can occur hundreds of times per night, leading to recurrent asphyxia, arousals from sleep, daytime sleepiness, and adverse cardiovascular and cerebrovascular consequences. OSA is caused by the ef

[Sleep Disorders and Autonomic Nervous System Dysfunction].

Parasympathetic nervous system activity dominates during non-rapid eye movement (REM) sleep, whereas the sympathetic nervous system is dominant during REM sleep. The balance between the sympathetic and parasympathetic nervous systems reduces the heart rate and blood pressure during non-REM sleep and increases these parameters during REM sleep and wakefulness. Heart rate variability analysis, a non-invasive method of autonomic nervous system analysis, may be useful in screening for obstructive sleep apnea and also to predict orthostatic hypotension secondary to autonomic disturbances in patient

Sleep disorders in people with type 2 diabetes and associated health outcomes: a review of the literature.

Sleep disorders are linked to development of type 2 diabetes and increase the risk of developing diabetes complications. Treating sleep disorders might therefore play an important role in the prevention of diabetes progression. However, the detection and treatment of sleep disorders are not part of standardised care for people with type 2 diabetes. To highlight the importance of sleep disorders in people with type 2 diabetes, we provide a review of the literature on the prevalence of sleep disorders in type 2 diabetes and the association between sleep disorders and health outcomes, such as gly

[Sleepiness among adolescents: etiology and multiple consequences].

Over the past century a dramatic decline in sleep duration among adolescents, such as more than one hour of sleep loss per night, has been reported. A debt in sleep duration could lead to sleep deprivation, a major risk factor associated with daytime sleepiness. Sleepiness refers to the inability to maintain an adequate level of alertness during the day which may result in more or less being able to control falling asleep at inappropriate times. This literature review updates on sleepiness regarding its characteristics, etiology and consequences on adolescents. Studies revealed that from 25 %

Evaluation of periodic limb movements in a putative animal model of restless leg syndrome.

Restless leg syndrome (RLS) is a major healthcare burden with increasing prevalence. It has been demonstrated that periodic limb movements (PLM) can occur as an isolated phenomenon, but they are often associated with this syndrome and are the only symptom of this disorder that can be measured electrophysiologically. The aim of this study was to examine the sleep-wake behavior and the presence of limb movement in a rat model of RLS induced by lesioning the A11 dopaminergic nuclei with the neurotoxin 6-hydroxydopamine (6-OHDA). Rats were implanted with electrodes for electrocorticography and ele

Morning Bright Light Treatment for Sleep-Wake Disturbances in Primary Biliary Cholangitis: A Pilot Study.

Patients with Primary Biliary Cholangitis (PBC) exhibit delayed sleep-wake habits, disturbed night sleep and daytime sleepiness/fatigue. Such combination of symptoms is reminiscent of delayed sleep-wake phase disorder (DSPD), which benefits from morning light treatment. The aim of the present pilot study was to test the effect of morning light treatment in a group of 13 well-characterized patients with PBC [all females; (mean ± SD) 53 ± 10 years]. Six healthy individuals (4 females, 57 ± 14 years) and 7 patients with cirrhosis (1 female, 57 ± 12 years) served as controls and diseased controls,

Marked blood pressure fluctuations during narcoleptic attacks alternating with abnormal wakefulness: effects of treatment with clonidine.

A middle-aged man was admitted to our department because of sleep-wake cycle disorders (alternating hypersomnia and sleeplessness), bipolar behavioural disturbances and marked fluctuations in blood pressure and heart rate. Neither evident precipitating stimuli nor an obvious cause for his illness were found. When tests that normally activate intrinsic autonomic responses were performed, two distinct circulatory patterns were recognized. During hypersomnia (phase A), cardiovascular reflex activity was blunted or abolished and orthostasis could not be maintained. The clinical, biochemical, behav

A motor signature of REM sleep behavior disorder.

BACKGROUND: The purpose of this study was to determine if there was a common pattern in movements during REM sleep behavior disorder (RBD). METHODS: We blindly compared video-monitored movements during RBD (n = 136 clips) and wakefulness/arousal (n = 53 clips) in patients with Parkinson's disease (n = 29) and without parkinsonism (idiopathic RBD, n = 31; narcolepsy, n = 5). RESULTS: The scorers accurately guessed the sleep/wake stage of 94% of video clips. Compared with wake movements, RBD movements were faster and more often repeated, jerky, and pseudohallucinatory, not self-centered, never

Machine-learning classification of bipolar disorder incorporating wearable-derived core body temperature and actigraphy-derived sleep indices.

AIM: This study aimed to classify patients with bipolar disorder (BD) and normal controls (NCs) using machine-learning models that incorporate wearable-derived core body temperature (CBT) and actigraphy-derived sleep indices. METHODS: We enrolled 23 euthymic patients with BD and 43 NCs. Sleep parameters were collected via wrist actigraphy for 14 days, and CBT was measured with a wearable device for 3 days to estimate the CBT nadir and its phase differences with sleep indices. Models were constructed with a base model using CBT- and sleep-derived features, and an extended model that included s

Neuroregulation of histamine of circadian rhythm disorder induced by chronic intermittent hypoxia.

Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is characterized by intermittent hypoxemia, sleep fragmentation, and excessive daytime sleepiness. OSA patients are at an elevated risk for circadian rhythm disturbances. Histamine is known to regulate the sleep-wake cycle predominantly via histamine H1 receptors. We utilized a C57BL/6 mouse model exposed to chronic intermittent hypoxia (CIH) for three weeks to assess alterations in circadian rhythmicity. Sleep architecture and voluntary wheel-running activity were evaluated. Additionally, c-fos expression and mPer2 levels in the frontal cortex (FC) and the suprac

[Melatonin: a new wonder drug?].

Melatonin, the hormone of the pineal gland is secreted during the night. It provides temporal information on diurnal and seasonal variation to the brain and the body. It is not a "classical" sleeping pill, and it should not be taken as such. The sole sufficiently investigated indication in humans is the treatment of certain sleep disorders from the group of sleep-wake-rhythm disturbances. These manifest themselves by sleep time of the day, i.e. in shift workers, after flights across time zones and in some blind and aged persons. None of the other promises, i.e. that melatonin conserves youth,

Effects of social isolation on sleep during the COVID-19 pandemic.

The current COVID-19 pandemic is a public health emergency that has seriously affected mental health in the general population. Both, studies on previous epidemics and those conducted during the current pandemic have reported a wide range of psychosocial consequences and multiple psychological symptoms as a result of said outbreaks, and among these problems, sleep/wake cycle alterations stand out. Publications addressing this phenomenon have consistently reported that nearly a third of people who experience social isolation develop insomnia, which, in turn, is an important predictor for mental

Therapeutic Use of γ-Hydroxybutyrate: History and Clinical Utility of Oxybates and Considerations of Once- and Twice-Nightly Dosing in Narcolepsy.

Narcolepsy is a rare and chronic hypersomnolence disorder characterized by excessive daytime sleepiness, disrupted nighttime sleep, sleep paralysis, and hypnagogic hallucinations and occurs with or without cataplexy. Orexin neuron loss has been implicated in the underlying pathophysiology of narcolepsy type 1 through dysregulation of sleep/wake patterns and rapid eye movement sleep. γ-Aminobutyric acid (GABA) has been shown to play a role in modulation of orexin neuronal activity during transitions from wakefulness to sleep. γ-Hydroxybutyrate (GHB), an endogenous analog of GABA, has demonstrat
