Unfinished Tasks and Unsettled Minds: A Diary Study on Personal Smartphone Interruptions, Frustration, and Rumination.

Personal smartphone use at work stretches the boundary between professional and personal life, leading to a more fragmented workday. This study investigates how interruptions from personal smartphone use during work hours affect employees' performance and well-being. Our primary aim is to clarify the pathways through which personal smartphone interruptions impact employee well-being, as reflected in work-related rumination after work (affective rumination, problem-solving pondering, and psychological detachment). Integrating propositions of social role theory and action regulation theory, we h…

A smartphone application as a promising tool for large-scale collection of participant data on fertility treatment.

In Japan, there is a registry for fertility treatment (the JSOG registry), which is a system that only registers select clinical data related to assisted reproductive technology (ART). This system does not include patient-derived data, so innovative tools that can complement the shortcomings of the existing registry may be useful. In this study we explored the potential of using a smartphone application platform to collect clinical data from patients directly. We recruited participants using the smartphone application “Luna Luna” and requested information that is typically gathered during a me…

Effect of smartphone breathalyzer feedback on willingness to drive in moderately intoxicated individuals: A randomized trial.

OBJECTIVE: The present study examined the impact of smartphone breathalyzer feedback on individuals' decisions to drive when they are moderately intoxicated. Although the legal driving limit for blood alcohol concentration (BAC) in the United States is < 0.08%, crash risk begins to increase at moderate BACs ≥ 0.04%. METHOD: We conducted a laboratory-based, randomized controlled trial in 20 adult drivers aged 21-39 with a history of binge drinking. Participants were given sex- and weight-based doses of alcohol over 90 min with a target peak BAC of 0.10%. Smartphone breathalyzer measurements we…

Non-contact measurement of glucose in urine by smartphone-based laser refractometry for diabetes monitoring.

Diabetes mellitus is a global health issue affecting millions of people and requires regular glucose level monitoring. Current non-invasive methods, such as urinalysis (including colorimetry and biosensors), are primarily laboratory-based and lack user-friendliness, limiting their practicality for continuous glucose monitoring. Although promising, research on smartphone-integrated laser refractometry for glucose detection remains limited. To address this gap, a non-contact, smartphone-based laser refractometer for glucose monitoring was developed. This prototype measures the refractive index o…

Non - Invasive, smartphone image-based screening for sickle cell disease at the point-of-need.

Leveraging the increasing accessibility of smartphones in healthcare settings, we developed a smartphone app aimed at enhancing sickle cell disease (SCD) screening, particularly in resource-limited settings. Our application provides accurate and non-invasive SCD screening with instant results at the point-of-need. The app operates by analyzing patient fingernail images via a smartphone image to gauge anemia severity and by using targeted inquiries to identify SCD-related symptoms. These inputs collectively generate an SCD IMage and Patient profile-based Likelihood Estimation (SIMPLE) score, wh…

Gait variability, fractal dynamics, and statistical regularity of treadmill and overground walking recorded with a smartphone.

BACKGROUND: The nonlinear variability present during steady-state gait may provide a signature of health and showcase one's walking adaptability. Although treadmills can capture vast amounts of walking data required for estimating variability within a small space, gait patterns may be misrepresented compared to an overground setting. Smartphones may provide a low-cost and user-friendly estimate of gait patterns among a variety of walking settings. However, no study has investigated differences in gait patterns derived from a smartphone between treadmill walking (TW) and overground walking (OW)…
