Role of Oligodendrocytes and Myelin in the Pathophysiology of Autism Spectrum Disorder.

Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is an early neurodevelopmental disorder that involves deficits in interpersonal communication, social interaction, and repetitive behaviors. Although ASD pathophysiology is still uncertain, alterations in the abnormal development of the frontal lobe, limbic areas, and putamen generate an imbalance between inhibition and excitation of neuronal activity. Interestingly, recent findings suggest that a disruption in neuronal connectivity is associated with neural alterations in white matter production and myelination in diverse brain regions of patients with ASD. This

Neuroanatomy of autism.

Autism spectrum disorder is a heterogeneous, behaviorally defined, neurodevelopmental disorder that occurs in 1 in 150 children. Individuals with autism have deficits in social interaction and verbal and nonverbal communication and have restricted or stereotyped patterns of behavior. They might also have co-morbid disorders including intellectual impairment, seizures and anxiety. Postmortem and structural magnetic resonance imaging studies have highlighted the frontal lobes, amygdala and cerebellum as pathological in autism. However, there is no clear and consistent pathology that has emerged

[Social jetlag: possibilities of micronutrient support].

The concept of social jetlag refers to asynchronous communication of a person's biological clock with tempo of modern living, which occurs mainly as a result of intensive work. At the core of social jetlag is sleep deprivation or chronic sleep restriction caused by social factors: pervasive use of electronic solutions and networks, intensive round the clock operation, chronic diseases. The aim of the work was to determine vitamins, minerals, and other micronutrients, the availability of which is important for supporting the organism in case of circadian rhythm sleep disorders and sleep restric

Robust Autism Spectrum Disorder-Related Spatial Covariance Gray Matter Pattern Revealed With a Large-Scale Multi-Center Dataset.

Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a complex neurodevelopmental disorder and its underlying neuroanatomical mechanisms still remain unclear. The scaled subprofile model of principal component analysis (SSM-PCA) is a data-driven multivariate technique for capturing stable disease-related spatial covariance pattern. Here, SSM-PCA is innovatively applied to obtain robust ASD-related gray matter volume pattern associated with clinical symptoms. We utilized T1-weighted structural MRI images (sMRI) of 576 subjects (288 ASDs and 288 typically developing (TD) controls) aged 7-29 years from the Autism B

Comparative analysis of emotional facial expression recognition and empathy in children with prader-willi syndrome and autism spectrum disorder.

BACKGROUND: Prader-Willi Syndrome (PWS) is a rare neurodevelopmental disorder that is often comorbid with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). Due to the close association between these two conditions, and recognizing that Theory of Mind (ToM) is related to social behaviors in ASD, there is a growing interest in studying the reciprocity of social communication between these two groups. METHOD: The primary objective of this study was to compare how children (n = 45) with PWS (n = 15), ASD (n = 15), and a control group (n = 15) respond to emotion recognition of facial expressions and empathy, which

Phoniatric aspects in cleft lip patients.

Multidisciplinary care for patients with clefts includes surgical correction of the facial disfigurement and optimizing the quality of speech to improve the social integration of the affected patient. This work summarizes the knowledge of communicational aspects of cleft lip (CL) patients. Cleft-type speech characteristics can be described as "passive" obligatory errors resulting from the anatomical defect and "active" compensation efforts. Long-lasting phonological deficits in patients with clefts may be due to the fact that their development is affected by abnormal learned neuromotor pattern

[Neurobiological Markers of Autism Spectrum Disorders in Infancy].

The article aims to systematically review recent studies on early symptoms of autism developmental dis- orders. Autism spectrum disorders is a group of neurodevelopmental disorders that is characterized by impairment of communication and social interaction. Nevertheless, the earliest detected features of ASD are impairments of attention disengagement and orientation to novel stimulus, perception abnor- malities of stimuli of magnocellular visual pathway and executive control deficit. The role of attention impairment for manifestation of other symptom of ASD including social deficit is discusse

The Impact of Dynamic Seating on Classroom Behavior of Students with Autism Spectrum Disorder.

OBJECTIVE: Children with autism have sitting and on-task behavior problems in class. In this study, the effect of three alternative classroom-seating devices such as regular classroom chairs, therapy balls, and air cushions were examined on students' classroom behavior. MATERIALS & METHODS: 15 students with autism participated in this A1-B-A2-C multiple treatments study from Mashhad's Tabasom School, Mashhad, Iran in 2014. Students' behaviors were video recorded in three phases: sitting on their common chairs during phase A, air-sit cushioned in phase B, and ball chairs in phase C. Sitting ti

Characterization of Courtesy Stigma Perceived by Parents of Overweight Children with Bardet-Biedl Syndrome.

BACKGROUND: A child's obesity is generally perceived by the public to be under the control of the child's parents. While the health consequences of childhood obesity are well understood, less is known about psychological and social effects of having an obese child on parents. We set out to characterize stigma and courtesy stigma experiences surrounding obesity among children with Bardet-Biedl syndrome (BBS), a multisystem genetic disorder, and their parents. METHODS: Twenty-eight parents of children with BBS participated in semi-structured interviews informed by social stigmatization theory,

Autistic features in Cohen syndrome: a preliminary report.

Cohen syndrome is a rare, genetic, connective-tissue disorder, with the genetic abnormality linked to chromosome 8q22. Its physical features (particular facial characteristics; body, limb, and visual abnormalities; height and weight problems) have been well documented but little is known about the psychological and behavioural development of individuals with the condition. Suggestion of a dual diagnosis of autism in a small minority of individuals led to a more detailed survey of parents belonging to the Cohen Syndrome Support Group, based in the UK. Thirty-three individuals, 18 males and 15 f

Anxiety and depression in a community sample: the influence of comorbidity on social functioning.

The main aim of the present study was to examine whether the well-established association between depression and social dysfunction still remains when effects of a coexistent anxiety disorder are eliminated from the data. As these effects strongly depend on the proportion of depressed subjects suffering simultaneously from an anxiety disorder, we first examined the frequency of mixed and pure depressive disorders and that of pure anxiety disorders (control subjects) in a community sample (n = 483). Using DIS/DSM-III criteria (reference period 6 months), pure anxiety disorders were most frequen

Altered white matter fractional anisotropy and social impairment in children with autism spectrum disorder.

Individuals with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) have severe difficulties in social interaction and communication, as well as restricted and/or stereotyped patterns of behavior. Previous studies have suggested that abnormal neural connectivity might be associated with higher information processing dysfunction involving social impairment. However, the white matter structure in ASD is poorly understood. To explore this, we conducted a voxel-based, whole-brain diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) analysis to determine fractional anisotropy (FA), λ(1), λ(2) and λ(3) in high-functioning children with ASD

Rett syndrome in adults with severe intellectual disability: exploration of behavioral characteristics.

Rett syndrome is a genetically linked form of autism spectrum disorder (ASD) accompanied by intellectual disability (ID). The disorder is also characterized by cardiorespiratory dysregulation, disturbance in muscle tone, reduced brain growth and scoliosis. Over 300 studies have been published on the disorder, most of which has focused on identification of causative factors, which appears to be the result of mutations of gene MECP2. Rarely have adults with Rett syndrome been studied, and behavioral characteristics in these individuals are largely unknown. The present study aimed to extend what

Reduced medial periventricular diffusion markers are associated with depressive symptoms and social deficits in ASD.

The glymphatic system is a candidate mechanism in autism spectrum disorder (ASD), linked to altered cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) dynamics, perivascular space (PVS) enlargement, and neuroinflammation, yet its relation to brain structure and clinical outcomes remains unexamined. We analyzed multimodal MRI (T2 FLAIR, T1, diffusion) in 58 adult males (29 ASD, 29 TD) from ABIDE-II, quantifying regional DTI-ALPS indices, free water metrics, white matter hyperintensities, and PVS and CSF volumes. ASD showed a more pronounced anterior peak in the DTI-ALPS anterior-to-posterior profile (group × position:

The Brief Observation of Symptoms of Autism: Validation study in a Latin American sample.

Autism spectrum disorder presents as a multifaceted condition characterized by pronounced impairments in social communication and behavioral patterns. Diagnosis hinges upon the expertise of clinicians, comprehensive developmental history, and observation of specific behavioral markers. However, in low-income countries, access to screening tools and standardized diagnostic tests for autism spectrum disorder remains profoundly limited. Moreover, the COVID-19 pandemic has exacerbated these challenges, rendering diagnostic protocols impractical. In response to these barriers, the Brief Observation
