National Immunization Coverage Survey Saudi Arabia, 1991.

A nationwide survey was carried-out aiming at determination of immunization coverage level against the six killer diseases of childhood (tuberculosis, diphtheria, pertussis, tetanus, poliomyelitis, and measles). Variations between geographical zones, urban-rural settings, age, education and mother's employment, father's education, and child's birth order were studied. The standard WHO cluster technique was used. The sample (1102 children) was restricted to Saudi children 1-2 years old. Interviewers were exposed to training and methods of calibration, and involved in a pilot survey. Nationally,

[Situational anxiety in myasthenia gravis].

Neuromuscular block can cause anxiety. These known experimental results lead to the expectation of conditioned phobic reactions in myasthenia gravis. A sample of 240 patients with the disease do not show the theoretically expected results in the Fear-Survey-Schedule. But interindividual variation of anxiety corresponds to some clinical parameters, relevant for the disease. Patients with facial muscular symptoms have higher values on social phobia but no higher scores on a depression-scale. Opposite to the facial-feedback theory, this result supports the hypothesis, that intersubjective feedbac

The propensity for schedule-induced polydipsia is related to differences in conditioned avoidance behaviour and in defense reactions in a defeat test.

In line with previous research showing that animals predisposed to develop schedule-induced polydipsia when submitted to intermittent distribution of food show differential behavioural and neurochemical characteristics, the present experiments investigated the nature of defense reactions to aversive situations in rats that do or do not develop schedule-induced polydipsia. It was found that rats that engage in excessive drinking during intermittent feeding display more rapid active avoidance learning in a 2-way shuttle-box and show less freezing when confronted with an aggressive resident male

Infants' discrimination of moving and stationary objects.

An operant technique was used to train 10-wk.-old infants on a simultaneous discrimination task with a checkerboard cube and a bull's-eye sphere presented in a stationary form. Discrimination testing with the objects in motion and with the objects stationary indicated that infants are able to discriminate between simultaneously presented objects whether stationary or in motion. The results are contrasted to T. G. R. Bower's assessment of infants' utilization of features in perceiving moving objects.

Congenital cardiac disease in childhood x socioeconomic conditions: a relationship to be considered in public health?

INTRODUCTION: Congenital heart defects, cardiac malformations that occur in the embryonic period, constitute a serious health problem. They cover a proportion of 8-10 per 1000 live births and contribute to infant mortality. OBJECTIVE: To identify the socioeconomic status of children undergoing cardiac surgery at the Hospital Universitário da Universidade Federal do Maranhão, in São Luis, the existence of material elements that contribute to worsening conditions. METHODS: We conducted a retrospective study with a quantitative approach, descriptive and reflective, from the interviews conducted

Effects of Classical Music on Behavioral and Physiological Stress Markers in Socially Isolated Prairie Voles.

Chronic social stressors negatively affect behavioral, physiological, and neuroendocrine functioning. Interventions such as listening to music may alter behavioral and physiological responses to social stressors. This study investigated the effects of music exposure (vs. ambient noise) during chronic social isolation on physiological and behavioral outcomes in socially monogamous prairie voles. Potential sex differences in responses to chronic social isolation with and without music exposure were also examined. Music exposure significantly reduced validated anxiety- and depression-related beha

Dimensions of social inequality in the health of women in England: occupational, material and behavioural pathways.

This paper examines the role of behavioural and psychosocial risk and protective factors in explaining social inequalities in the general self-assessed health of women. Using path analysis, data from the Health Survey for England (1993) are used to demonstrate how different dimensions of social position (working conditions, general social advantage and material deprivation) have distinct pathways to ill-health. Smoking, diet, alcohol consumption, exercise, social support and job strain were all related to poorer health, but not always in the predicted direction. The effects of social position

Analysis of a parent-initiated social media campaign for Hirschsprung's disease.

BACKGROUND: Social media can be particularly useful for patients or families affected by rare conditions by allowing individuals to form online communities across the world. OBJECTIVE: Our aim in this study was to conduct a descriptive and quantitative analysis of the use of a social media community for Hirschsprung's Disease (HD). METHODS: In July 2011, a mother of a child with HD launched the "Shit Happens" campaign. The campaign uses social media (blogs, Twitter, and Facebook) to engage other families affected by HD. Internet analytics including Google Analytics and Facebook Insights were

Beauty in the eye of the beholder: Attention to attractive faces dissociates across covert and overt measures.

Attractive faces attract attention. Here, we examined how facial attractiveness influenced covert and overt social attention. Participants discriminated targets occurring after one of 32 different face-object cue pairs, which varied in the degree of attractiveness. Experiment 1 measured covert social attention in manual responses while maintaining central fixation. No evidence of attentional preference for faces was found. Experiment 2 measured overt social attention in eye movements while maintaining natural viewing conditions. A reliable oculomotor preference for attractive faces was found.

Effects of environmental deprivation on negative symptoms of schizophrenia: a nationwide survey in Japan's psychiatric hospitals.

Research into the effects of environmental deprivation on negative symptoms of schizophrenia is limited, and few attempts have been made to differentiate secondary symptoms caused by the social environment. Japan's mental health system allows us to examine the extent to which understimulating social environments in hospitals contribute to negative symptoms of institutionalized patients while controlling for other factors. A random sample of inpatients of diagnosed with schizophrenia and hospitalized for 1 year or longer was drawn from the universe of inpatients attending a convenience sample o

Affiliative behavioural phenotype and microglial activation predict social decision-making following immune activation.

Social animals are faced with a critical decision when sick: to affiliate or withdraw. The behavioural response during an immune challenge varies by individual and species. However, the social and biological factors leading to variation in this decision during an immune challenge are unknown. Here, we explore the affiliative behavioural phenotype, "huddlers" and "non-huddlers," as a social predictor, and microglial activation and peripheral cytokine expression as biological predictors of social decision-making during an immune challenge. To measure social decision-making, we recorded social ap

Exploring the Action-Perception Loop in Children Born Very Preterm: Associations Between Biological Motion Perception, Motor Coordination, and Behavioral Outcomes.

PURPOSE: Children born very preterm (VPT < 32 weeks' gestation) are at elevated risk for neurodevelopmental difficulties, including social functioning, motor coordination, and perceptual processing, domains that also show overlap with autism-related profiles. Biological motion (BM) perception, which supports the extraction of social information from movement, may represent one important pathway through which early motor and perceptual functioning relate to later socio-emotional development. METHODS: We examined BM perception, motor coordination, and behavioral outcome in 64 VPT and 31 full-te

Vagally mediated heart rate variability, stress, and perceived social support: a focus on sex differences.

Higher vagally mediated heart rate variability (vmHRV), reflecting vagal activity as indexed by heart function and lower stress vulnerability, is associated with higher perceived social support. Seeking social support is an adaptive stress response, and evolutionary theories suggest that females use this strategy more than males. The current study investigated the hypothesis that higher vmHRV is related to higher perceived social support under conditions of higher, relative to lower, stress, and that this association is most prominent in females. A healthy student sample (n = 143; 82 males, 61
