Atypical Inter-Brain Synchrony Network Couples With Behavioral and Linguistic Impairments in Autism Spectrum Disorder.

Social difficulty is a core phenotype of autism spectrum disorder (ASD), yet its mechanisms remain poorly understood due to insufficient integration of interpersonal neural dynamics with real-world behavioral and linguistic impairments. This study elucidated this integrated mechanism by investigating inter-brain synchrony (IBS) networks between 44 children with ASD and 48 typically developing children and their caregivers. Using functional near-infrared spectroscopy during puzzle-solving and free-talking tasks, an interpretable graph neural network identified ASD-specific atypical IBS subnetwo

Ethics of Personalised Medicine: Importance of the Multidisciplinary Approach in KidneySign Project.

This article explores the ethical and societal issues in developing personalised medicine (PM) as part of the KidneySign project, which aims to mobilise translational big data to validate a proteomic signature of renal fibrosis with prognostic value. This research offers hope for improved management of chronic kidney disease, including diagnosis and treatment. This article examines how the human and social sciences can be mobilised within a biomedical research project to identify and prevent concomitant ethical, legal and social issues. This point of view defends a multidisciplinary approach t

[The role of the prefrontal cortex in the sensory problems of children with autism spectrum disorder and its involvement in social aspects].

INTRODUCTION: In persons with autism spectrum disorders (ASD), aberrant sensory perceptions could be as characteristic and disruptive as the presence of anomalies in social communication and interaction or restricted and repetitive interests. Most of them present sensory modulation disorders (hyper- or hypo-responsiveness) in several sensory channels. Furthermore, there is a deficit in the integration of the information from a number of sensory systems (for example, auditory and visual). All this would worsen the core symptoms related with communication and increase the appearance of behaviour

Social signal processing for studying parent-infant interaction.

Studying early interactions is a core issue of infant development and psychopathology. Automatic social signal processing theoretically offers the possibility to extract and analyze communication by taking an integrative perspective, considering the multimodal nature and dynamics of behaviors (including synchrony). This paper proposes an explorative method to acquire and extract relevant social signals from a naturalistic early parent-infant interaction. An experimental setup is proposed based on both clinical and technical requirements. We extracted various cues from body postures and speech

Preparing for the unexpected: the pivotal role of social and behavioral sciences in trials of biomedical HIV prevention interventions.

A range of efficacies have been reported for biomedical HIV prevention interventions, including antiretroviral treatment, male circumcision, preexposure prophylaxis, microbicides, and preventive vaccines. This range of efficacies probably results from the influence of multiple inputs and processes during trials, including the strength and target of the intervention, host factors, target population characteristics, level of HIV exposure, and intervention dose. Expertise in social and behavioral sciences, in conjunction with basic science, clinical research, epidemiology, biostatistics, and comm

Pharmacotherapy of social anxiety disorder.

INTRODUCTION: Social anxiety disorder (SAD) is one of the most common psychiatric disorders, with a lifetime prevalence of 5-12%. Fears of scrutiny and embarrassment in social and public situations are accompanied by anxiety symptoms, avoidance behavior, and impairment in social and work functioning. Several classes of medication, as well as cognitive-behavioral therapies, have evidence for efficacy in the treatment of SAD, but only a minority of individuals with the disorder receives treatment. AREAS COVERED: This review focuses on the evidence-based treatment of SAD with medications includi

Issues emerging from the London Learning Disability Plan.

This article gives an overview of the draft of the London Learning Disability Plan developed by the Department of Health, Social Services Inspectorate and the National Health Service Executive. The London Plan is founded on a social model of disability in which there is not only a strong focus on health and social care, but also an integration with housing, education, employment, leisure and other relevant organizations. It advocates integrated commissioning and delivery of specialist learning disability services that will require both health services and nurses to change existing structures a

[Professional guidance problems in spastic hemiparesis school children].

People with physical handicap adapt themselves with more difficulties to professions that require manual abilities. For these youngsters, the professional guidance plays a major role. Their desire is to become independent from the social point of view, independent which is linked with a professional activity. If the youngsters with physical handicaps are correctly orientated, they become socially independent and they perform their professional duties with great correctness. In order to fulfill this goal we must understand the nature of the motric problems. This knowledge is obtained by using a

The Role of Social Support in Concussion Rehabilitation: A Prospective Mixed Methods Study of Canadian University Athletes' Return to Sport.

CONTEXT: Social support is an important consideration during athletes' rehabilitation following a concussion. Yet, its influence during the return-to-sport (RTS) strategy has been underexplored. DESIGN: Concussed athletes' experiences with social support during RTS were explored prospectively using an explanatory sequential mixed methods design. METHODS: University rugby, basketball, and track and field athletes (N = 8) from a single Canadian institution, 19-23 years of age (mean = 20.63, SD = 1.51), completed concentric circles maps, the Perceived Available Support in Sport Questionnaire, a

Network analysis highlights socio-demographic patterns of stone tool-using primates.

While the nutritional benefits and social learning of tool use in primates have been widely studied, far less is known about how tool use is associated with social life. We investigated the social aspects of tool use in a hybrid population of long-tailed macaques (Macaca fascicularis aurea × M. f. fascicularis) on Koram Island, Thailand, comprising both stone tool users and non-users. To assess potential socio-demographic patterns, we examined whether tool use differed between sexes and whether it was related to variation in dominance rank. Using social network analyses, we assessed whether to

A deficit in face-voice integration in developing vervet monkeys exposed to ethanol during gestation.

Children with fetal alcohol spectrum disorders display behavioural and intellectual impairments that strongly implicate dysfunction within the frontal cortex. Deficits in social behaviour and cognition are amongst the most pervasive outcomes of prenatal ethanol exposure. Our naturalistic vervet monkey model of fetal alcohol exposure (FAE) provides an unparalleled opportunity to study the neurobehavioral outcomes of prenatal ethanol exposure in a controlled experimental setting. Recent work has revealed a significant reduction of the neuronal population in the frontal lobes of these monkeys. We

Interpersonal motor coordination Modulates Visuo-Tactile integration.

Visuo-tactile cross-modal congruence effects (CCEs) refer to impaired tactile processing when task-irrelevant visual cues are presented close to the body but in a spatially incongruent location. This interference extends to visual cues appearing far from the body and on distant objects when individuals are reaching toward those objects or observing someone else grasping them. These effects highlight the impact of motor processes on cross-modal integration. However, it remains unclear whether real-time interpersonal interactions, which require continuous prediction of others' actions, influence

Environment Enrichment Strategies for Pre- and Post-Term Infants: A Summarized Communication From Pediatric Physical Therapists.

PURPOSE: Environmental enrichment (EE) represents a dynamic approach to enhance infants' cognitive and motor development through augmented environment with stimulating, novel opportunities. Despite the recognized benefits of EE on neuromotor outcomes, its integration into early physical therapy interventions for infants at risk of neuromotor delays and disabilities remains under-defined and inconsistently applied in standard practice. This gap underscores the necessity for comprehensive guidance to systematically incorporate EE into early intervention programs and daily routines. SUMMARY OF K

Perceived stigma and community integration among clients of assertive community treatment.

Facilitating the integration of persons with psychiatric disabilities is an important goal of community programs. In addition to limitations such as inadequate housing, poverty, and unemployment, a common barrier to community adjustment identified by people with psychiatric disabilities is their perception of being stigmatized. This study examined the relationships between perceived stigma and community integration in 95 clients of assertive community treatment (ACT) teams, using sequential multiple regression procedures. Findings indicate that despite their physical presence in the community

Towards optimizing the service pathway "back to work" for people with acquired brain injury.

INTRODUCTION: Rising costs and increasing complexity place growing pressure on healthcare and social security systems worldwide. For people with acquired brain injury (ABI), successful return to work (RTW) depends not only on medical recovery but also on timely, coordinated support across healthcare, social security, vocational integration, and employment systems. Although Switzerland provides comprehensive healthcare and social protection, services relevant to RTW remain highly fragmented, posing substantial challenges for sustainable employment after ABI. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed (1) to

Programming maternal and child overweight and obesity in the context of undernutrition: current evidence and key considerations for low- and middle-income countries.

The goals of the present targeted review on maternal and child overweight and obesity were to: (i) understand the current situation in low- and middle-income countries (LMIC) with regard to recent trends and context-specific risk factors; and (ii) building off this, identify entry points for leveraging existing undernutrition programmes to address overweight and obesity in LMIC. Trends reveal that overweight and obesity are a growing problem among women and children in LMIC; as in Ghana, Kenya, Niger, Sierra Leone, Tanzania and Zimbabwe, where the prevalence among urban women is approaching 50
