Social anxiety is associated with poorer peer functioning for girls but not boys with ADHD.

There is mixed evidence for whether or not co-occurring anxiety is associated with poorer peer functioning in children with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), which may be partly due to studies typically using a global measure of anxiety and failing to consider possible sex differences. The present study examined child-reported social anxiety in relation to peer functioning and whether this association differs by sex in 93 children (66% male; ages 8-12) with ADHD. Children, parents, and teachers completed a measure of social acceptance, and teachers also completed measures of aso

Social and emotional impact of anterior drooling in school-age children and young people with neurodevelopmental disabilities.

PURPOSE: Anterior drooling is a common comorbidity in children and young people (CYP) with neurodevelopmental disabilities. This study aimed to assess the social and emotional impact of drooling in CYP with a developmental age (DA) of 6 years and older, in whom this impact may differ from those with a lower DA due to their developing sense of self and awareness of their position within social groups. METHODS: Questionnaire data collected for routine clinical care were used to assess parental perceptions of the impact of drooling on (1) social interaction; (2) satisfaction with social interact…

Effects of reduction in shoulder pain on quality of life and community activities among people living long-term with SCI paraplegia: a randomized control trial.

OBJECTIVE/BACKGROUND: People with spinal cord injury (SCI) paraplegia can develop shoulder problems over time, which may also cause pain. Shoulder pain may complicate or interfere with a person's daily activities, social events, and their overall quality of life (QOL). The purpose of this study was to examine changes in social interaction and QOL after an exercise treatment for shoulder pain in people with SCI paraplegia. DESIGN: Fifty-eight participants with SCI paraplegia who were also experiencing shoulder pain were selected and randomized to either an exercise treatment or a control group…

Exploring How Social Communication Ability Is Affected by Disability, Context and Experience for Adolescents Transitioning to Adulthood.

BACKGROUND: Effective social communication is adapted to the context, the setting and the people involved. It is less clear how measures of adolescent social communication ability reflect these aspects of context. Social communication ability emerges from children's early experiences in varied contexts. Evidence is mixed on whether prior experience in the workplace, post-secondary education or independent living, is associated with social communication ability for those settings. AIMS: The purpose of the study was to empirically evaluate the associations between measures of adolescents' socia

Socialsatiation: Social anxiety alters belongingness dynamics?

BACKGROUND: Social interactions and stable individual differences shape an individual's sense of belongingness -a core need of being accepted by others. Indeed, a sense of belonging is postulated-and found-to affect and be affected by socializing. A diminished sense of belonging and reduced socializing characterizes social anxiety (SA). However, the impact of SA on the temporal dynamics between socializing and belongingness remains unclear. METHOD: Using ecological momentary assessment (EMA), we examined the impact of SA on socializing-belongingness dynamics. Participants (N = 116) provided r…

Interaction Frequency, Interaction Satisfaction, and Physical Frailty by Living Arrangement among Community-Dwelling Older Adults.

BACKGROUND: Living alone and limited social interaction are associated with frailty, while low satisfaction with interactions is associated with negative health outcomes. However, the effects of living arrangements, interaction frequency, and interaction satisfaction on physical frailty remain unclear. This study examined the associations among living arrangements, the frequency and satisfaction of social interactions, and physical frailty among community-dwelling older adults. METHODS: A cross-sectional study was conducted among 5,538 community-dwelling adults aged 60 or older living in Aich…

Trajectories of Social Anxiety in Children: Influence of Child Cortisol Reactivity and Parental Social Anxiety.

Few studies have examined the interactive effect of intra- and extra-individual vulnerability factors on the trajectory of social anxiety in children. In this study, we examined the joint influence of familial vulnerability (i.e., parental social anxiety) and child biological stress vulnerability (i.e., cortisol reactivity) on trajectories of social anxiety. Children (N = 112 (57 males), M age = 8.14 years, S.D. = 2.25) were followed over three visits spanning approximately three years. Parental social anxiety was assessed using the Social Phobia and Anxiety Inventory, children's behavior and

The Influence of Robot Facial Expression and Inclusion Behavior on Rapport and Trust in Older Adults: Mixed-Factorial Experimental Study.

BACKGROUND: The World Health Organization framework for healthy aging emphasizes that the capacity to establish and sustain relationships is a vital component of functional ability. Social robots offer valuable support for this relational aspect, although their effectiveness is contingent upon the quality of the interactions. While it is established that facial expressions and inclusive behaviors can influence rapport building, the combined effects of these elements on older adults remain unexamined. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to investigate the main and interaction effects of robot facial e

Psychological Well-Being During the Second Wave of COVID-19 Pandemic: The Mediation Role of Generalized Anxiety.

INTRODUCTION: The outbreak of the COVID-19 has largely impacted individuals' health and lifestyles. This study aimed to investigate people's psychological well-being during the second phase of the COVID-19 pandemic. METHODS: We selected six indicators of psychological well-being: fear of COVID-19, loneliness, social interaction anxiety, generalized anxiety, PTSD, and depression. A sample of 231 Italian participants (56.3% women), with a mean age of 32.7 (SD=12.61), completed an online survey from February to March 2021, during the so called "second wave". It included the Fear of COVID-19 Scal…

Genetic Modeling of Dyadic Behavioral Traits: Implications for Estimation and Interpretation of Variance Components.

Studying the genomic control of dyadic social interactions is gaining traction in animal genetics. However, genetic modeling of social interactions poses several challenges, one of which is whether social interactions should be treated as dyadic traits or as aggregated traits at the individual level. In this study, we systematically compared two approaches: dyadic models using dyadic traits and marginal models using marginally aggregated traits and we derived the algebraic relationships between their variance components. In the application, we used a published dataset on post-mixing aggression…

Social Networks and Longitudinal Neuropsychiatric Symptom Trajectories across the Cognitive Continuum.

INTRODUCTION: Neuropsychiatric symptoms (NPSs) significantly contribute to caregiver burden and the risk of institutionalization in patients with cognitive dysfunction. Although social isolation is linked to cognitive decline, its associations with longitudinal NPS trajectories are poorly understood. This study explores the association between social network characteristics and longitudinal NPS trajectories across the cognitive continuum. METHODS: We conducted a retrospective observational study of 618 adults (aged ≥ 50) evaluated at a memory clinic between 2017 and 2024. Social networks were

Attenuated attention engagement and sensorimotor resonance to social events in first-episode adolescent depression: Evidence from EEG oscillations.

BACKGROUND: Depressive symptoms may disrupt social brain development during adolescence, resulting in adverse long-term quality of life. Yet, little is known regarding the cognitive and neural changes during the processing of social interactions in adolescents with first-episode depression, particularly from an allocentric perspective. METHODS: We used electroencephalography (EEG) to assess two neural indicators during the observation of others' interactions, including sensorimotor mu suppression and occipital alpha-band activity, in 22 adolescents with first-episode major depressive disorder…

Intergenerational transmission of social anxiety: the role of social referencing processes in infancy.

Responses to an unfamiliar adult were examined in infants of mothers with social phobia (N= 79) and infants of nonanxious comparison mothers (N= 77) at 10 and 14 months in a social referencing paradigm. On each occasion, a female stranger first interacted with the mother and then approached and interacted with the infant. Over time, infants of mothers with social phobia showed increasing avoidance of the stranger, particularly when they were behaviorally inhibited. In boys, maternal social phobia was associated with increasing fearful responses. Infant avoidance was predicted by expressed mate

The social environment and IL-6 in rats and humans.

Inflammatory cytokine levels predict a wide range of human diseases including depression, cardiovascular disease, type 2 diabetes, autoimmune disease, general morbidity, and mortality. Stress and social experiences throughout the lifecourse have been associated with inflammatory processes. We conducted studies in humans and laboratory rats to examine the effect of early life experience and adult social position in predicting IL-6 levels. Human participants reported family homeownership during their childhood and current subjective social status. Interleukin-6 (IL-6) was measured from oral muco

Overcoming Health Fears: How do online peers help patients with chronic pain?

This study investigates how online interactions influence anxiety levels in patients with chronic musculoskeletal pain by examining the impact of social interactions within online health communities. We used actor-oriented modelling to analyse the online interactions of 200 users with musculoskeletal pain in an English-speaking online health community over three years. This method focuses on how people make decisions and interact within a network. We examined the behaviours and network dynamics of influential users with different anxiety levels to see how they engage socially online and if the…

In tune with AI: Singing as a social surrogate to ease loneliness and foster social connection.

As social isolation becomes increasingly prevalent in the digital era, this research investigates the potential of AI-facilitated co-experiences to alleviate loneliness through two experiments with healthy Chinese adults. In Experiment 1 (N = 180), we examined beliefs about three imagined activities (co-singing, co-running, and co-diagnosing) with human versus AI partners by assessing anticipated loneliness change, social presence, companionship, and empathy. Results supported the hypothesis of positive AI-mediated co-experience, albeit weaker than human, with co-singing/co-running anticipated

Feeling socially connected to others is linked to better emotion regulation in adolescent girls' daily lives: An ecological momentary assessment study.

Developing effective emotion regulation ability to manage negative emotion (NE) is critical during adolescence. Social baseline theory posits social connectedness may impact adolescents' everyday emotion regulation. This study examined the relation between social connectedness and NE after a negative social interaction (emotion regulation) and whether contextual factors moderate the association. Adolescent girls (N = 114; Mage = 12.26, SD = 0.8) from a midsized Midwestern U.S. city (67.5% White, 19.3% Black/African American, 9.6% biracial, 1.8% Asian, 1.8% Native American/other race; 8.8% Lati…
