[Botulism: the first epidemic outbreak in Peru].

The first occurrence of Botulism described in Perú took place in Huancayo city, in November 1988. Twelve persons became ill, two of them died. All of them ate "salchipapas" a very popular meal in the country done with fried potatoes, hot dogs, eggs and dressed with mayonnaise) in a restaurant near their working place. Six of the twelve patients were immediately taken to Lima and admitted in Edgardo Rebagliati Martins National Hospital from the Social Security Peruvian Institute, and treated by the International Medicine Department. We studied five of the six patients; they all had similar symp…

Attachment Anxiety, Avoidance, and Disorganization: Latent Profiles of Attachment and Their Associations With Hypomentalization, Depressive Symptoms, and Suicidality.

OBJECTIVES: Disorganized attachment is an important concept in contemporary attachment theory, where it plays a significant role in understanding vulnerability to distress and psychopathology. Although latent class analysis of attachment has been conducted several times, disorganization has not been included in them as a dimension of attachment alongside anxiety and avoidance. The study aimed to: identify latent profiles of attachment, including attachment disorganization; and examine differences between attachment profiles in levels of mentalization difficulties, depressive symptoms and suici

Access to, use of, and experiences with social alarms in home-living people with dementia: results from the LIVE@Home.Path trial.

BACKGROUND: Social alarms are considered an appropriate technology to ensure the safety and independence of older adults, but limited research has been conducted on their actual use. We, therefore, explored the access, experiences, and use of social alarms among home-bound people with dementia and their informal caregivers (dyads). METHODS: From May 2019 to October 2021, the LIVE@Home.Path mixed-method intervention trial collected data from semi-quantitative questionnaires and qualitative interviews conducted among home-dwelling people with dementia and their informal caregivers in Norway. Behavioural changes and perceived criminal offending: an exploratory study of accounts from carers of people living with dementia.

Many people with dementia, especially those with younger age of onset and frontotemporal dementia, experience changes in behaviour and personality, including disinhibition, socially inappropriate behaviour and aggression. These behaviours can lead to contact with law enforcement personnel where there are criminal offending concerns. To date, little research has explored carers' experiences of such situations. This article reports on an exploratory interview study, conducted in Australia, with nine carers of people with dementia and two people living with a diagnosis. The study revealed behavio

The Impact of Specialized Medical Equipment Needs on Shelter Accessibility for Homeless Patients.

Housing insecurity is a well-recognized social determinant of health, with poverty and homelessness significantly impacting health outcomes. When faced with unstable housing, health often becomes a lower priority for patients. We present the case of a 52-year-old homeless, morbidly obese female who arrived at the emergency department with worsening dyspnea. She required Bilevel Positive Airway Pressure (BiPAP) support for acute-on-chronic hypercapnic respiratory failure. Her discharge planning was complicated by the need for a BiPAP machine, which limited her options for placement in a receivi

The significance of mothers' attachment representations for vagal responding during interactions with infants.

Little is known about the significance of mothers' attachment for neurobiological responding during interactions with infants. To address this gap, this study examined links between mothers' (N = 139) attachment representations and dynamic change in respiratory sinus arrhythmia (RSA) while interacting with infants in the Still-Face Procedure (SFP). Mothers higher on secure base script knowledge (SBSK) exhibited greater RSA reactivity during the SFP characterized by lower RSA during normal play, higher RSA during the still-face, and lower RSA during reunion. Findings indicate that mothers highe

MicroRNAs: a light into the "black box" of neuropediatric diseases?

Although there have been tremendous advances in the diagnosis and treatment of pediatric brain diseases in the last few decades, the causes and pathogenesis of these diseases remain to be elucidated. Pediatric central nervous system (CNS) diseases create both short- and long-term impairments and disabilities and are therefore one of the leading causes for emotional, financial, and social burden to patients, their families, and their social network. The significant pediatric morbidity and mortality rates caused by CNS diseases call for equally significant efforts toward a better understanding o

Attachment organization in a sample of incarcerated mothers: distribution of classifications and associations with substance abuse history, depressive symptoms, perceptions of parenting competency and social support.

We report attachment classifications in a sample of pregnant women incarcerated in a state prison with a nursery program. Analyses were based on 69 women serving sentences for felony crimes who were followed from the birth of their child to completion of the prison nursery co-residence. They completed the Adult Attachment Interview shortly after entering the program and scales measuring depression, perceived parenting competency, and social support at study entry (Time 1) and program completion (Time 2). Incarcerated mothers had higher rates of insecure attachment than previous low-risk commun

Psychosexual health's impact on non-suicidal self-injury of college students.

To explore the correlation between Psychosexual Health development (APDS) and non-suicidal self-injury behaviors (NSSI) in adolescence, and investigate the mediating effects by adult attachment (AAS) and social supports (SSRS) between them. This study employs a missed design with quantitative pretests and tracing post-tests involving 1193 college students majoring in preschool and primary education. The participants are first-year (freshmen) and second-year students (sophmore), primarily women, at a higher vocational college in Shaanxi, utilizing APDS, AAS, SSRS and the NSSI questionnaires to

Technical, Medical and Ethical Challenges in Networks of Smart Active Implants.

Networks of distributed interactive micro-implants could enhance the treatment of otoneurological conditions such as tinnitus or restore impaired complex physiological/ motor functions such as gastrointestinal motility or grasping. For this, an electrical stimulation of neural and muscular tissue is a key prerequisite. Challenges in the development of such interactive micro-implants are the complex human-machine interface, the wireless power supply, and the long-term stability of implants as well as secure and safe signal transmission. This paper addresses all these topics as well as the ethic

Supportive housing: an evidence-based intervention for reducing relapse among low income adults in addiction recovery.

Within the ranks of the homeless are individuals coping with substance addiction and/or chronic physical or mental disability. Their special needs often pose significant barriers to successfully re-integrate into society. For these individuals, simply securing a roof overhead may not be an adequate solution. Supportive housing combines housing with access to on-site social services to assist persons coping with disabling physical and behavioral health conditions. This study examined whether an association could be found between length of residency in supportive housing and subjective well-bein

Masculinity, resources, and retention in care: South African men's behaviors and experiences while engaged in TB care and treatment.

RATIONALE: Globally, the prevalence of tuberculosis (TB) disease is significantly higher among men compared to women. This is compounded by men's poorer uptake of TB testing and treatment, and worse outcomes for smear conversion and successful treatment completion compared to women; in South Africa specifically, TB accounts for a large portion of sex-specific life expectancy differences. OBJECTIVE: To understand men's unique barriers to accessing care and their needs while engaged in TB treatment, we conducted a qualitative study with men currently in or who recently completed TB treatment to

Suicide protective factors among trans adults.

A recent study indicated a suicide attempt rate of 41 % among trans (e.g., trans, transgender, transexual/transsexual, genderqueer, two-spirit) individuals. Although this rate is alarming, there is a dearth of literature regarding suicide prevention for trans individuals. A vital step in developing suicide prevention models is the identification of protective factors. It was hypothesized that social support from friends, social support from family, optimism, reasons for living, and suicide resilience, which are known to protect cis (non-trans) individuals, also protect trans individuals. A sam
