Bulimia nervosa: 5-year social outcome and relationship to eating pathology.

From an original sample of 50 patients, 32 female patients with bulimia nervosa were followed up for a minimum length of 5 years. Standardized interviews were employed to assess eating attitudes and behavior as well as social status both at entry and at completion of the follow-up period. All participants completed the Social Problem Questionnaire at follow-up. Social outcome was found to parallel eating disorder outcome. Being in a satisfactory stable relationship was associated with good eating disorder outcome. Being in a stable relationship was not related to eating disorder outcome. Good …

All You Need Is Facebook Friends? Associations between Online and Face-to-Face Friendships and Health.

Positive social relations are known to have a beneficial impact on health, however, little is known about the links of health with online relationships. In this study, we compare face-to-face and virtual friendships in their association with health. By building on previous results of studies conducted on the well-being of college students, we expect to find stronger associations of face-to-face friendships with health than of those established through Facebook. Furthermore, we expect to test the mediating role of social capital variables in this process. Two large-scale studies conducted in co

Condition severity and psychosocial functioning in pre-adolescents with spina bifida: disentangling proximal functional status and distal adjustment outcomes.

OBJECTIVE: To examine relations between condition severity and psychosocial functioning in 70 8- and 9-year-old pre-adolescents with spina bifida by testing several direct, indirect, and mediated effects models for proximal functional status and distal adjustment outcomes. METHODS: Proximal functional status outcomes (e.g., degree of involvement in activities, scholastic competence, athletic competence, attentional problems) and distal adjustment outcomes (e.g., behavior problems, social competence) were assessed with mother, father, and teacher report. Severity variables included spinal lesi

Prenatal exposure to maternal social disadvantage and psychosocial stress and neonatal white matter connectivity at birth.

Early life adversity (social disadvantage and psychosocial stressors) is associated with altered microstructure in fronto-limbic pathways important for socioemotional development. Understanding when these associations begin to emerge may inform the timing and design of preventative interventions. In this longitudinal study, 399 mothers were oversampled for low income and completed social background measures during pregnancy. Measures were analyzed with structural equation analysis resulting in two latent factors: social disadvantage (education, insurance status, income-to-needs ratio [INR], ne

Clinical characteristics and treatment outcomes of patients with major depressive disorder and comorbid anxiety disorders - results from a European multicenter study.

This naturalistic European multicenter study aimed to elucidate the association between major depressive disorder (MDD) and comorbid anxiety disorders. Demographic and clinical information of 1346 MDD patients were compared between those with and without concurrent anxiety disorders. The association between explanatory variables and the presence of comorbid anxiety disorders was examined using binary logistic regression analyses. 286 (21.2%) of the participants exhibited comorbid anxiety disorders, 10.8% generalized anxiety disorder (GAD), 8.3% panic disorder, 8.1% agoraphobia, and 3.3% social

'Why did you not tell me?': perspectives of caregivers and children on the social environment surrounding child HIV disclosure in Kenya.

OBJECTIVE: We sought to better understand how social factors shape HIV disclosure to children from the perspective of caregivers and HIV-infected children in Kenya. DESIGN: We conducted a qualitative study using focus group discussions (FGDs) to gain perspectives of caregivers and children on the social environment for HIV disclosure to children in western Kenya. FGDs were held with caregivers who had disclosed the HIV status to their child and those who had not, and with HIV-infected children who knew their HIV status. METHODS: FGD transcripts were translated into English, transcribed, and

Women in couples antenatal HIV counseling and testing are not more likely to report adverse social events.

BACKGROUND: Couple counseling has been promoted as a strategy to improve uptake of interventions to prevent mother-to-child HIV transmission (pMTCT) and to minimize adverse social outcomes associated with disclosure of HIV status. OBJECTIVES: We tested whether women counseled antenatally as part of a couple were more likely to accept HIV testing and nevirapine in a pMTCT program, and whether they would be less likely to experience later adverse social events than women counseled alone. METHODS: A pMTCT program that included active community education and outreach to encourage couple counseli

Social Class Discrimination and Academic Success: A Person-Centered Approach Among Adolescents Disadvantaged in Social Class.

INTRODUCTION: Prior research indicates that social class is strongly associated with academic outcomes such as GPA. However, little work explores the role that social discrimination plays in this relation. This study examined the link between social class discrimination and academic outcomes among high school students. METHOD: Participants were 956 working class adolescents (ages 13-18; 55% boys, 65% Latine) in the western United States. Using latent profile analysis, we identified four patterns of discrimination from five sources (teachers, classmates, friends, other teenagers, and community

Marxist concepts of alienation in relation to health: a narrative review of the evidence.

Public health scholars are increasingly interested in the Marxist concept of alienation to explain the existence of health inequities. Marx's use of the term stresses the crucial role of political economic structural factors in creating alienation. This article reports on a narrative review of literature that used Marx's theory of alienation and focuses on the mental and/or physical health effects of alienation. Our search resulted in 34 relevant articles. Collectively, they demonstrate the ongoing relevance of the concept of alienation to the creation of health inequities in contemporary soci

The Social Determinants of Health in Pediatric Concussion: A Scoping Review.

INTRODUCTION: In North America, concussions are a common injury in the pediatric population. Much of the research to date has focused on biological aspects of concussion. Consideration of psychological, social and ecological factors, specifically the social determinants of health (SDH), relevant to concussion is essential to advancing the field of pediatric concussion. OBJECTIVES: Using the WHO Conceptual Framework for Action on the Social Determinants of Health, we performed a scoping review to (1) identify and describe the research areas studied in the literature on SDH and pediatric concus

Addressing the Harms of Structural Racism on Health in Incarcerated Youth Through Improved Nutrition and Exercise Programs.

Every year, hundreds of thousands of youth across the country enter the juvenile legal system. A significantly disproportionate number of them are youth of color. While youth arrests have declined over the past several decades, racial disparities have increased and persist at every stage of the system. Many youth of color enter the juvenile legal system with a history of trauma and stress that compromises their health and well-being. Arrest, prosecution, and incarceration exacerbate these poor health outcomes. This paper examines several of the health impacts of structural racism in the polici

Marital Status, Living Arrangement, and Survival among Individuals with Advanced Prostate Cancer in the International Registry for Men with Advanced Prostate Cancer.

BACKGROUND: Studies have shown improved survival among individuals with cancer with higher levels of social support. Few studies have investigated social support and overall survival (OS) in individuals with advanced prostate cancer in an international cohort. We investigated the associations of marital status and living arrangements with OS among individuals with advanced prostate cancer in the International Registry for Men with Advanced Prostate Cancer (IRONMAN). METHODS: IRONMAN is enrolling participants diagnosed with advanced prostate cancer (metastatic hormone-sensitive prostate cancer

The reproductive geography of miscarriages. Social identities, places, and reproductive inequalities.

Increasing epidemiological evidence demonstrates the correlation between toxic contamination and miscarriages, and the disproportionate exposure of marginalised and racialised groups to environmental burdens. Yet, the debate on environmental reproductive health is still largely underpinned by a reductionist biomedical understanding of the health-place relationship that overlooks the interplay between social identities and places. In this article, I argue that understanding the role that places play in shaping reproductive inequalities, beyond the simplistic recognition of the environment as a

Multiplicative Impact of Adverse Social Determinants of Health on Outcomes in Lupus Nephritis: A Meta-analysis and Systematic Review.

OBJECTIVE: Social determinants of health (SDoH) likely contribute to outcome disparities in lupus nephritis (LN). Understanding the overall burden and contribution of each domain could guide future health equity-focused interventions to improve outcomes and reduce disparities in LN. Objectives of this meta-analysis were to 1) determine the association of overall SDoH and specific SDoH domains on LN outcomes and 2) develop a framework for the multidimensional impact of SDoH on LN outcomes. METHODS: We performed a comprehensive search of studies measuring associations between SDoH and LN outcom

Cognitive Reappraisal Impairs Negative Affect Regulation in the Context of Social Rejection for Youth With Early-Stage Borderline Personality Disorder.

Application of emotion regulation strategies might be susceptible to the context of social rejection for individuals with borderline personality disorder (BPD). This study compared the ability of 27 outpatient youths (15-25 years old) with early-stage BPD and 37 healthy controls (HC) to apply expressive suppression and cognitive reappraisal in standard and socially rejecting laboratory contexts. BPD youths were largely as able as HCs to regulate negative affect across instruction and contexts. However, cognitive reappraisal in the context of social rejection heightened BPD negative facial expr

Living Alone During Old Age and the Risk of Dementia: Assessing the Cumulative Risk of Living Alone.

OBJECTIVES: This study examines the association between living alone during old age and dementia. Whereas most previous studies on this topic utilize measures of living alone status that were obtained at a single point in time, we compare this typical approach to one that measures long-term exposure to living alone among older adults and assesses whether dementia is more likely to occur within individuals with more accumulated time living alone. METHODS: Data come from the Health and Retirement Study, with a follow-up period of 2000-2018. A total of 18,171 older adults were followed during th

Role of family factors in provision and perception of social support for older people in Iran: a cross-sectional survey.

BACKGROUND: Iran has experienced a very fast fertility transition. The process of demographic transition, coupled with modernization, has had considerable consequences for the structure and function of families. There is rising concern in Iran about a potential decline in family care and support for older people as a result of these changes. The main aim of this study was to provide a benchmark by examining current associations between family factors and older people's social support, both perceived and received. METHODS: A cross-sectional survey of a random sample of 644 people aged 60 + yea

Editorial: Social Determinants of Maintaining Nutrition in Older Adults with Advanced Dementia.

Dysphagia is recognised as part of the frailty syndrome, especially for those at the end of life. There is a tension in management between the need to optimize nutrition status as part of the management of oral frailty, and respecting the wishes of patients and/or family members in the form of advance care planning and advance directives regarding to artificial nutrition and hydration. Management will likely be influenced by many social determinants, rather than solely be based on evidence from clinical research.
