Social Circus for People with Disabilities: A Video Analysis through the Lens of the MOHO.

BACKGROUND: Social circus is a branch of circus that primarily focuses on personal and community development, rather than an elite level of professional artistry required of traditional circus. Social circus engages participants in circus activities such as juggling and acrobatics with therapeutic aims such as building confidence or developing life skills. While there is a growing body of literature around social circus, there is currently limited literature exploring the interface between social circus and occupational therapy theory. OBJECTIVE: This study is aimed at examining existing exam

Microevolutionary divergence and plasticity of laryngeal shape in the house mouse (Mus musculus).

The morphology of the larynx is essential for vocalization, respiration, and airway protection, yet the sources of phenotypic variation within species are not well understood. This study investigated whether genetic background exerts a stronger influence than environmental factors on laryngeal morphology in two house mouse strains. Using geometric morphometrics, we analyzed the size and shape of 79 laryngeal specimens and examined the effects of body size, genetics, obesity, exercise, and social housing. Our results demonstrate that genetic background significantly shapes laryngeal structure.

Validation of the psychoactive substance refusal Self-Efficacy Questionnaire (PSRSEQ) in adolescent case-clients of social workers in Hong Kong.

BACKGROUND: Self-efficacy is a key concept in various behavioral theories. Refusal self-efficacy is important in understanding issues related to psychoactive substance use. To facilitate related research, this study translated and validated the Chinese version of the 14-item Psychoactive Substance Refusal Self-efficacy Questionnaire (PSRSEQ) among adolescents. There is a debate about whether such a refusal self-efficacy scale should be unidimensional or multidimensional. METHODS: A survey was conducted among 601 adolescent case-clients of social workers in Hong Kong from July 2021 to June 202

SmellSpace: An Odor-Based Social Network as a Platform for Collecting Olfactory Perceptual Data.

A common goal in olfaction research is modeling the link between odorant structure and odor perception. Such modeling efforts require large data sets on olfactory perception, yet only a few of these are publicly and freely available. Given that individual odor perception may be informative on personal makeup and interpersonal relationships, we hypothesized that people would gladly provide olfactory perceptual estimates in the context of an odor-based social network. We developed a web-based infrastructure for such a network we called SmellSpace and distributed 10 000 scratch-and-sniff registra

The impact of shelter-in-place during the COVID-19 pandemic on social support for mental health recovery: A prescribing-oriented qualitative study of patient perspectives.

The COVID-19 pandemic created unprecedented challenges for social connectivity and mental health, especially during mandated shelter-in-place periods. For patients engaged in mental health treatment, the social impact of their shelter-in-place experience remains an area of active investigation. This is particularly relevant in the context of social prescribing, a growing area of clinical intervention where healthcare providers actively refer patients to local social resources or activities to enhance mental health and wellbeing. Here, we investigated patient perspectives on their social suppor

Behavioral tests for the assessment of social hierarchy in mice.

Social hierarchy refers to the set of social ranks in a group of animals where individuals can gain priority access to resources through repeated social interactions. Key mechanisms involved in this process include conflict, social negotiation, prior experience, and physical advantages. The establishment and maintenance of social hierarchies not only promote group stability and well-being but also shape individual social behaviors by fostering cooperation and reducing conflict. Existing research indicates that social hierarchy is closely associated with immune responses, neural regulation, met

Social Determinants of Emergency Department Utilization, Overuse, and Access Barriers Among Adults: A Systematic Review.

Emergency departments (EDs) are facing increasing adult demand, and socially driven patterns of repeated, avoidable, or nonurgent use remain insufficiently synthesized across healthcare settings. ED utilization is influenced not only by clinical need but also by broader social and structural conditions that shape access to healthcare. This systematic review examined the social determinants associated with ED utilization, overuse, repeated attendance, and access barriers among adults. A structured search of major biomedical and health services databases was conducted, and eligible studies were

Obesity and Intersectionality: Brazil's Experience in Advancing Equity through Transformative Public Policies.

Obesity and food and nutrition insecurity are increasingly understood as syndemic outcomes of enduring social inequalities. In Brazil, these conditions disproportionately affect Black women in socially vulnerable contexts, due to the intersection of gender, race/ethnicity, and low socioeconomic status. In response, Brazil has launched the new Intersectoral Strategy for Obesity Prevention, which frames obesity as a multidetermined condition shaped by social, economic, cultural, and environmental factors. Grounded in intersectionality and rights-based governance, the Strategy is structured aroun

The Clinical Sequelae of the COVID-19 Pandemic: Loneliness, Depression, Excessive Alcohol Use, Social Media Addiction, and Risk for Suicide Ideation.

BACKGROUND: Depression, loneliness, and alcohol use disorder are associated with suicide ideation. The ongoing COVID-19 pandemic has challenged our social structures with social distancing and isolation policies implemented worldwide, severely restricting social interactions. Studies regarding the effects of the pandemic are starting to shed light on the harmful psychological effects of these policies. AIMS: This study aims to identify whether the increase in suicidal ideation among college students (mostly young adults) during the pandemic was due to the known risk factors of loneliness, dep…

Changes in services and structure in community residential treatment facilities for substance abuse patients.

OBJECTIVE: This study examined the extent to which community residential facilities that contract with the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) to treat substance abuse patients are providing more services and structure to meet the needs of a client population with increasingly severe problems. METHODS: A nationwide sample of 249 community residential facilities with VA contracts was surveyed in 1995 and again in 1998. RESULTS: In 1998 facilities were more likely than they were in 1995 to have psychiatrists and psychologists available to patients as well as specialized counseling and psychoed

Group sports games for social anxiety in university students: a randomized controlled trial revealing gender-specific efficacy.

BACKGROUND: Social anxiety is a prevalent issue among college students, with many experiencing chronic anxiety in social situations and a strong fear of negative evaluation. This condition can severely impair both occupational and social functioning, leading to significant consequences. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to evaluate the efficacy of Therapeutic Group Sports Games (TGSG) for reducing social anxiety. The TGSG intervention incorporates Yalom's therapeutic principles into structured sports activities. METHODS: A total of 105 college students with elevated social anxiety were randomly as

Large-Scale Neuroimaging and Genetic Analyses of the Human Thalamus in Loneliness.

BACKGROUND: Although loneliness is prevalent and significantly impacts society globally, its neural and genetic bases remain poorly understood. The thalamus, which receives sensory information from the environment, may have a more significant role in social interactions than previously recognized. Here, we integrate neuroimaging and genetic approaches to characterize structural differences within the thalamus associated with loneliness. METHODS: We obtained thalamic nuclei volumes on brain scans from 45,834 individuals (age range: 45-82 years) in the UK Biobank and grouped them into 6 anatomi

In the eye of the beholder - validating the visual social anxiety scale (VSAS) in social anxiety disorder.

The Visual Social Anxiety Scale (VSAS) is a novel picture-based self-report measure of social anxiety that shown promising psychometric properties among non-selected participants. The present study aimed to validate the VSAS among individuals with clinically diagnosed social anxiety disorder (SAD) and establish clinical cutoff scores. One-hundred-and-three adults with SAD completed the VSAS with a battery of additional self-report measures of social anxiety, depression, and general anxiety. Internal consistency, convergent and discriminant validities, were assessed. Clinical cutoff scores were

Exploring the role of the DSM-5 performance-only specifier in adolescents with social anxiety disorder.

The DSM-5 social anxiety disorder section has recently added the performance-only specifier for individuals whose anxiety is limited to speaking or performing in public. The impact of the DSM-5 performance-only specifier remains a neglected area. The sample comprised 44 healthy controls and 50 adolescents with a clinical diagnosis of SAD (20% met criteria for the performance-only specifier). Findings revealed that adolescents with the specifier had a later age of onset; lower levels of depression, social anxiety symptomatology and clinical severity; and a lesser degree of comorbidity relative

Male-Biased Social Deficits in Chd8+/R2219* Mouse Model of Autism Linked to Hippocampal Abnormalities.

Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a neurodevelopmental condition with a 4:1 male bias, yet the biological basis for this sex difference remains poorly understood. Heterozygous mutations in the chromatin remodeler CHD8 confer high risk for ASD, with phenotypes influenced by sex and genetic background. Here, we generated Chd8+/R2219* mice carrying a CRISPR-Cas9-generated mutation orthologous to a human variant. These mice recapitulated core ASD features, including macrocephaly and autistic-like behaviors. Notably, social deficits showed a male preponderance, directly mirroring the human sex bias

Mapping the landscape of social behavior.

Social interaction is integral to animal behavior. However, lacking tools to describe it in quantitative and rigorous ways has limited our understanding of its structure, underlying principles, and the neuropsychiatric disorders, like autism, that perturb it. Here, we present a technique for high-resolution 3D tracking of postural dynamics and social touch in freely interacting animals, solving the challenging subject occlusion and part-assignment problems using 3D geometric reasoning, graph neural networks, and semi-supervised learning. We collected over 110 million 3D pose samples in interac

Inhibition of Rac1 in ventral hippocampal excitatory neurons improves social recognition memory and synaptic plasticity.

Rac1 is critically involved in the regulation of the actin cytoskeleton, neuronal structure, synaptic plasticity, and memory. Rac1 overactivation is reported in human patients and animal models of Alzheimer's disease (AD) and contributes to their spatial memory deficits, but whether Rac1 dysregulation is also important in other forms of memory deficits is unknown. In addition, the cell types and synaptic mechanisms involved remain unclear. In this study, we used local injections of AAV virus containing a dominant-negative (DN) Rac1 under the control of CaMKIIα promoter and found that the reduc

Critical Commentary: Cities in a post-COVID world.

This paper examines the effect of the COVID-19 pandemic and its related economic, fiscal, social and political fallout on cities and metropolitan regions. We assess the effect of the pandemic on urban economic geography at the intra- and inter-regional geographic scales in the context of four main forces: the social scarring instilled by the pandemic; the lockdown as a forced experiment; the need to secure the urban built environment against future risks; and changes in the urban form and system. At the macrogeographic scale, we argue the pandemic is unlikely to significantly alter the winner-

Examining the Structure of Negative Affect Regulation and Its Association With Hedonic and Psychological Wellbeing.

The present study examines the structure of negative affect regulation strategies by confirmatory factor analysis. A total of 264 students (n = 187 women, 65 men) (M = 24 years; SD = 9.32) took part in this study. Results show a good fit indices for a three facets model: (1) modification of situation (problem-directed action, seeking emotional and instrumental social support, psychological abandonment and social isolation); (2) attentional deployment and cognitive change (distraction, acceptance, gratitude, rumination, reappraisal, spirituality, and social comparison); and (3) response modific
