This paper presents five cases of steroid resistant vernal keratoconjunctivitis which were treated with cromolyn sodium. Four of the five patients had an associated punctate keratitis which cleared in this treatment. Topical application of cromolyn in the form of 4%aqueous solution appears to be an effective means for treating vernal keratoconjunctivitis .The drug is well tolerated and is without significant ocular side effects. The sodium and potassium content of human senile cataractous lenses was investigated by flame photometry. A parallelism was found between the severity of the senile cataractous disorder and the increase of sodium and decrease of potassium content of lenses. The changes in ion concentration were not entirely continuous; gaps were found for both cations in a certain concentration range. The involvement of lens proteins in maintaining the gradients for sodium and potassium is also discussed.

Control subjects voluntarily overbreathed to produce end-tidal PCO2 levels similar to those found in patients suffering from neurotic or endogenous non-retarded depression. Red cell sodium content was found to decrease during overbreathing in all the subjects. The changes were similar to those usually reported for depressed patients. The results imply that red cell sodium levels are in part dependent on respiratory behaviour. They suggest a need for considerable caution in interpreting red cell sodium values from psychiatric patients.

In a group of hypertensive patients it has been shown that moderate sodium chloride restriction has a hypotensive effect that is similar to that produced by thiazide diuretics. Blood pressure changed in relation to body weight in individual patients, and appeared to correlate with their sodium balance. Serial measurements were made of total body calcium and sodium, using whole body neutron activation analysis, in six patients being treated for osteomalacia. All showed a rise in total body calcium ranging from 3 to 30%; this continued for up to 24 months after the start of treatment, though complete healing had apparently occurred after 6 months on the basis of histological examination of biopsy specimens of bone. As the total body calcium rose there was a fall in the non-exchangeable sodium pool in bone.

Thirty-one of 256 cases of chronic destructive pneumonia who were judged, by the severity of illness and haemoptysis, to have lung gangrene, were managed with intravenous sodium cephalothin. Five patients died, two in relation to emergency pneumonectomy. In comparison with results of management of this disease in previous, similar patients, the results are encouraging.
