Leiomyoma originating from axilla: A rare case report and differential diagnosis.

INTRODUCTION: Leiomyoma is a form of benign tumor originated in hypertrophy of the smooth muscles, which is most prevalent in the uterus and gastrointestinal tract. However, Leiomyoma originating from smooth muscle at the vessels lying on deep soft tissue is very rare. CASE REPORT: Our case was a rare case of leiomyoma originating from the axillary region, which was initially diagnosed as a fibroadenoma on radiological examination. The mass was separated from surrounding tissues and totally resected. Pathologically, hematoxylin-eosin-stained biopsy tissue showed the typical findings of leiomy

Radiosensitive hemangiopericytoma in the soft palate.

Hemangiopericytomas are uncommon neoplasms of vascular origin, and rarely arise in the pharynx. We report a case of a 78-year-old female with hemangiopericytoma in her soft palate exhibiting prominent radiosensitivity. Hemangiopericytomas are considered to be radioresistant and wide local excision is a treatment of choice, but their nature is widely variable. In treating aggressive hemangiopericytomas, radiation therapy can be selected.

Aggressive fibromatosis. A rare cause for lumbar bulging.

A 21-year-old male patient was treated for idiopathic scoliosis in a general orthopedic practice. Despite treatment a steady increase of lumbar bulging was noted. An extensive soft tissue tumor was found to be the cause of this. The tumor was resected locally at the orthopedic department and was found to be histologically an aggressive fascial fibromatosis. Radiologically the vertebral column showed hemihypertrophy of the pedicles and transverse processes of Th 10 through Th 12 on the ipsilateral side. Since the resection could not be considered radical, local radiation was applied with teleco

Magnetic resonance imaging of the chest: a diagnostic comparison with computed tomography and hilar tomography.

Computed tomography (with and without contrast enhancement) provides excellent diagnostic accuracy for the evaluation of the chest. Oblique (55 degrees) and anteroposterior hilar tomography is accurate for the evaluation of hilar nodes and masses. Magnetic resonance techniques provide excellent differentiation of vascular and nonvascular structures and therefore should be useful in the hilum and mediastinum. Magnetic resonance imaging was used in 55 patients with known pathologic conditions in the mediastinum, hilum, and lungs to determine the accuracy and efficacy of this technique compared w

Fabricating an obturator using rapid prototyping to design the framework: a case report.

Congenital or acquired maxillary defects cause various esthetic and functional problems. Maxillary deficiency can be prosthetically restored with an obturator. Computer-aided design/computer-assisted manufacture technology, which had been used exclusively in fixed prosthodontics, is now being more widely used in other fields, including removable prosthodontics, after the introduction of software and availability of a comprehensive solution for designing and manufacturing a removable partial denture (RPD). The rapid prototyping (RP) technique enables precise fabrication of the RPD framework in

Correction of facial and mandibular asymmetry using a computer aided design/computer aided manufacturing prefabricated titanium implant.

Patients with significant craniofacial asymmetry may have functional problems associated with their occlusion and aesthetic concerns related to the imbalance in soft and hard tissue profiles. This report details a case of facial asymmetry secondary to left mandible angle deficiency due to undergoing previous radiotherapy. We describe the correction of the bony deformity using computer aided design/computer aided manufacturing custom-made titanium onlay using novel direct metal laser sintering. The direct metal laser sintering onlay proved a very accurate operative fit and showed a good aesthet

Heinz-Lippmann disease as an underrecognized cause of chronic venous insufficiency-associated cutaneous ulcers: Clinical and imaging findings.

Venous insufficiency is a frequent cause of consultation in primary care settings. Heterotopic ossification, consisting of an abnormal formation of true bone in extraskeletal soft tissues, is an underrecognized complication of chronic venous insufficiency that may cause torpid ulcers. We report a case of 78-year-old woman, with a long-standing history of venous insufficiency and tibial fracture, showing a non-healing ulcer associated with subcutaneous calcifications of the left lower extremity. Gold standard of imaging diagnosis are both plain radiographs and computed tomography but also magne

Diagnostic approach to retromolar trigone cancer by multiplanar computed tomography reconstructions.

Neoplasms of retromolar trigone have important peculiarities due to their spatial relationships with the surrounding structures. Tumours that involve this area can extend to nearby muscles; adipose spaces; and other anatomic structures, such as the soft palate, the tonsillar fossa, the parapharyngeal space, and the floor of the mouth. In spite of a relatively quick diagnosis, the real extent of these tumours is typically underestimated at clinical examination. Our purpose was to propose a systematic approach to the use of multiplanar computed tomography reconstructions to evaluate normal retro

Facial changes in patients with skeletal class III deformity after bimaxillary surgery: an evaluation based on three-dimensional photographs registered with computed tomography.

The objective of this study was to evaluate facial soft and hard tissue changes, individually and relative to each other, in patients with skeletal class III deformity after bimaxillary surgery using three-dimensional (3D) photos obtained by white light scanning. Thirty patients with skeletal class III deformity who underwent bimaxillary surgery were selected. Each patient underwent white light scanning and spiral computed tomography (CT) within two weeks before (T0) and six months after surgery (T1). The 3D photos were registered with CT soft tissue models for T0 and T1, and the skeletal area

Beyond Soft Hands: Efficient Grasping With Non-Anthropomorphic Soft Grippers.

Grasping and manipulation are challenging tasks that are nonetheless critical for many robotic systems and applications. A century ago, robots were conceived as humanoid automata. While conceptual at the time, this viewpoint remains influential today. Many robotic grippers have been inspired by the dexterity and functionality of the prehensile human hand. However, multi-fingered grippers that emulate the hand often integrate many kinematic degrees-of-freedom, and thus complex mechanisms, which must be controlled in order to grasp and manipulate objects. Soft fingers can facilitate grasping thr

Hard- and soft-tissue symmetry comparison in patients with Class III malocclusion.

OBJECTIVE: Our aim was to describe hard- and soft-tissue asymmetry in people who have a skeletal Class III malocclusion, and to compare with those without asymmetry. We also performed a regional analysis of a possible correlation between facial soft- and hard-tissue asymmetries. METHODS: This retrospective study was performed with the use of the computed tomographic scans of 60 subjects. The skeletal Class III subjects were categorized into 2 subgroups: soft-tissue menton deviation ≤4 mm (n = 20) versus >4 mm (n = 20). The Class III groups were compared with a Class I symmetry group (n = 20).

Postoperative Limb-Offset Discrepancy Notably Affects Soft-Tissue Tension in Total Hip Arthroplasty.

BACKGROUND: Inadequate soft-tissue tension in total hip arthroplasty is regarded as one cause of dislocation or abductor muscle weakness. The purpose of the present study was to assess how the postoperative discrepancy in limb offset (consisting of both femoral offset and acetabular offset) affects soft-tissue tension compared with other factors among patients with unilateral hip disease undergoing total hip arthroplasty. METHODS: A total of 89 consecutive patients underwent mini-incision total hip arthroplasty involving an anterolateral or posterior approach and with use of a computer naviga

A novel volumetric magnetic resonance imaging paradigm to study upper airway anatomy.

STUDY OBJECTIVES: We utilized novel three-dimensional volumetric analysis techniques with magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) to study the upper airway and surrounding soft-tissue structures. These MRI techniques allowed us to objectively quantify the volume of the tongue, soft palate, parapharyngeal fat pads, and lateral pharyngeal walls. DESIGN: We first validated our volumetric imaging techniques on a phantom and then demonstrated that our results were reliable and reproducible in normal subjects who did not lose weight. Finally, we studied 12 obese, nonapneic women during wakefulness before

Imaging of chest wall disorders.

Pathologic processes that may involve the chest wall include congenital and developmental anomalies, inflammatory and infectious diseases, and soft-tissue and bone tumors. Many of these processes have characteristic radiologic appearances that allow definitive diagnosis. Sternal deformities can be visualized at radiography and their severity quantified with computed tomography (CT). In cervical rib, CT with multiplanar reconstruction may demonstrate relevant anatomic detail and the relationship between bone deformity and arterial compression. In Poland syndrome, radiography reveals an area of
