Spinal epidural hematoma (SEH) is a rare but serious condition characterized by the accumulation of blood in the spinal epidural space. As SEH progresses, it can result in permanent damage or paralysis if not treated promptly. We report three cases of SEH: one spontaneous and two traumatic. Timely diagnosis and intervention led to favorable outcomes, with significant neurological recovery in all cases. Minimizing the extent of laminectomy in evacuating the SEH reduced the likelihood of post-laminectomy kyphosis while avoiding the need for spinal instrumentation. More research is required to op

While recent decades have seen a rapid rise in cases of infant tongue-tie and in surgery to correct it, a controversy is now raging over the condition. Opinion is especially divided over so-called posterior tongue-tie, a variant which is detected based on the "feel" of the sub-lingual space. Drawing on ethnographic research with clinicians in England, we clarify the professional and personal commitments involved in the controversy. Our analysis is informed by Douglas' theory of cultural representations (grid-group theory), in which ideas of what is natural and unnatural constitute central meta

Decades of breakthroughs resulting from cross feeding of microbiological research and technological innovation have promoted Listeria monocytogenes to the rank of model microorganism to study host-pathogen interactions. The extraordinary capacity of this bacterium to interfere with a vast array of host cellular processes uncovered new concepts in microbiology, cell biology and infection biology. Here, we review technological advances that revealed how bacteria and host interact in space and time at the molecular, cellular, tissue and whole body scales, ultimately revolutionising our understand

The hepatic stellate cells (HSCs) localize at the space of Disse in the liver and have multiple functions. They are identified as the major contributor to hepatic fibrosis. Significant understanding of HSCs has been achieved using rodent models and isolated murine HSCs; as well as investigating human liver tissues and human HSCs. There is growing interest and need of translating rodent study findings to human HSCs and human liver diseases. However, species-related differences impose challenges on the translational research. In this review, we focus on the current information on human HSCs isol

A growing body of literature suggests the inner ear vestibular system has a substantial impact on cognitive function. The strongest evidence exists in connecting vestibular function to the cognitive domain of visuospatial ability, which includes spatial memory, navigation, mental rotation, and mental representation of three-dimensional space. Substantial evidence also exists suggesting the vestibular system has an impact on attention and cognitive processing ability. The cognitive domains of memory and executive function are also implicated in a number of studies. We will review the current li

Inflight and post-landing "immunity" to the "coriolis sickness susceptibility test", observed during the Skylab M131 experiment, suggests that the otolith organs play a major role in space motion sickness (SMS). This view is supported by the report that ocular counter-torsion asymmetries correlate with SMS incidence and severity. Further data indicate that sensory-motor adaptation to microgravity includes a process whereby central interpretation of otolith signals is biased from "tilt" toward translation. However, unexpected responses to linear acceleration suggest the importance of gravicepto

Observations with three astronauts yielded two major findings. First, perceived self-motion during sinusoidal roll differed immediately postflight from preflight. Between 70 and 150 min after landing, roll was perceived primarily as linear translation. Secondly, more horizontal eye movement was elicited by roll stimulation immediately postflight relative to both preflight and later postflight observations. These results support an "otolith tilt-translation reinterpretation" hypothesis, which has clear implications for understanding astronaut reports of space motion sickness during the early pe

The up-to-date hypotheses of the genesis of vestibulo-vegetative disorders in weightlessness are taken under critical analysis. Preference is given to the concept which attaches greatest importance to the changes in stereotyped interactions of analyzers responsible for space perception. It is, however, emphasized that neither hypothesis can account for all the phenomena seen in crewmembers in orbital flight. It is, therefore, indicated that mechanisms of vestibulo-vegetative disorders need further study. It is believed that the most promising line of research is to study the role of endogenous

Under normal conditions, potassium is predominantly found within cells. The concentration gradient of sodium and potassium ions between intracellular and extracellular spaces enables signal transmission through membrane depolarization. The disruption of this transcellular process leads to elevated potassium ion levels in the extracellular space, and thus in the blood, a condition known as hyperkalemia. Clinically, hyperkalemia may present as cardiac arrhythmias, muscle weakness, and palpitations. The post-mortem accumulation of potassium ions in various human tissues and organs, such as the he

Due to their simplicity of implementation and compliance with the encryption issue, chaotic models are often utilized in picture encryption applications. Despite having many benefits, this approach still has a crucial space issue that makes encryption algorithms based on it susceptible to brute-force assaults. This research's proposed novel picture encryption technique has a vast key space and great key sensitivity. To achieve this goal, the proposed method combines two-way chaotic maps and reversible cellular automata (RCA). First, this approach uses a two-way chaotic model named spatiotempor

The postcentral sulcus is the posterior boundary of the postcentral gyrus where the somatosensory cortex is represented. In the human brain, the postcentral sulcus is composed of five distinct segments that are related to the somatosensory representation of different parts of the body. Segment 1 of the postcentral sulcus, located near the dorsomedial boundary of each hemisphere, is associated with toe/leg representations, segment 2 with arm/hand representations, segment 3 with blinking, and segments 4 and 5, which are near the lateral fissure and the parietal operculum, with the mouth and tong

As human space exploration advances to establish a permanent presence beyond the Low Earth Orbit (LEO) with NASA's Artemis mission, researchers are striving to understand and address the health challenges of living and working in the spaceflight environment. Exposure to ionizing radiation, microgravity, isolation and other spaceflight hazards pose significant risks to astronauts. Determining neurobiological and neurobehavioral responses, understanding physiological responses under Central Nervous System (CNS) control, and identifying putative mechanisms to inform countermeasure development are

Spaceflight alters many processes of the human body including cardiac function and cardiac progenitor cell behavior. The mechanism behind these changes remains largely unknown; however, simulated microgravity devices are making it easier for researchers to study the effects of microgravity. To study the changes that take place in cardiac progenitor cells in microgravity environments, adult cardiac progenitor cells were cultured aboard the International Space Station (ISS) as well as on a clinostat and examined for changes in Hippo signaling, a pathway known to regulate cardiac development. Behavioral research indicates that successful face individuation is associated with sensitivity to subtle spatial relations between facial features, as well as to the features themselves. We used a blocked functional magnetic resonance adaptation paradigm to examine the sensitivity of the core face network to spatial relations in faces. The fusiform face area (FFA) was sensitive to spatial relations, responding more strongly to a single face presented with various feature spacings than to repeated presentations of an identical face. This response to spacing variations was as strong as the resp

Objective: One of the important issues affecting parenting is how parents navigate the digital age. The digital age has created the concept of ideal parenting, which can unintentionally distance parents from the real world, preventing them from recognizing their children's primary needs. Consequently, children may seek alternative spaces to fulfill their needs, which often involve virtual and unreal content, leading to negative effects and consequences. Thus, this study aims to explore the challenges and consequences of parenting in the age of digital children. Method : This qualitative resear

Extreme heat is intensifying globally and disproportionately harms people experiencing homelessness, who face continuous exposure and limited capacity to access cooling. We reviewed the literature on heat-protection interventions that report findings for people experiencing homelessness. Only 12 studies met the inclusion criteria, indicating a sparse and heterogeneous evidence base mainly from high-income countries (USA, Canada, and Australia). No eligible studies were identified from Europe despite substantial heat events in the region. Interventions included cooling centres and cooled public

This study addresses the growing mental health challenges among university students, with a particular focus on depression, by examining the role of campus greenness in mitigating its effects. In contrast to the majority of studies that concentrate on campus environments in Western countries, this research uniquely investigates how variations in campus density and form within the Chinese context influence the role of campus greenness in mitigating depression among university students. By analyzing three distinct types of university campuses in Macau, the study also reflects on the broader impl

Over the past few decades, research has indicated that the buildup of waste proteins, like amyloid-β (Aβ), in the brain's interstitial spaces is linked to neurodegenerative diseases like Alzheimer's, but the details of how such proteins are removed from the brain are not well understood. We have developed a numerical model to investigate the aggregation and clearance mechanisms of Aβ in the interstitial spaces of the brain. The model describes the volume-averaged transport of Aβ in a segment of the brain interstitium modeled as a porous medium, oriented between the perivascular space (fluid-fi

Prison-based therapeutic community (TC) programming is derived from the perspective that drug addiction is primarily symptomatic of cognitive dysfunction, poor emotional management, and underdeveloped self-reliance skills, and can be addressed in a collaborative space where a strong ideological commitment to moral reform and personal responsibility is required of its members. In this space, evidence of rehabilitation is largely centered on the client's relationship to language and the public adoption of a "broken self" narrative. Failure to master these linguistic performances can result in th

The amyloid-β precursor protein (APP) is a ubiquitous protein with a strong genetic link to Alzheimer's disease. Although the protein was identified more than forty years ago, its physiological function is still unclear. In recent years, advances in technology have allowed researchers to tackle APP functions in greater depth. In this review, we discuss the latest research pertaining to APP functions from development to aging. We also address the different roles that APP could play in specific types of cells of the central and peripheral nervous system and in other organs of the body. We argue
