Persisting speech difficulties at 7-8 years of age - a longitudinal study of speech production in internationally adopted children with cleft lip and palate.

AIM: To longitudinally investigate speech production (consonant proficiency, consonant errors and perceived velopharyngeal competence) in 17 internationally adopted (IA) children with unilateral cleft lip and palate (UCLP) at three time points. METHOD: Consonant proficiency (percent consonants correct, consonant inventory) and number and type of consonant errors were calculated based on blind phonetic transcriptions of words from the Swedish Test of Articulation and Nasality (SVANTE). Velopharyngeal competence was perceptually rated by three blinded experienced speech-language pathologists at

Speech characteristics of childhood apraxia of speech: A survey research.

PURPOSE: There has not been any valid method for the clinical diagnosis of Childhood Apraxia of Speech (CAS) up to now, and the golden standard for diagnosis is the expert's opinion. The current research was conducted to obtain criteria used by the Iranian Speech-Language Pathologists (SLPs) to establish speech characteristics and co-occurring problems of CAS based on their knowledge and clinical experience. METHODS: This research used a questionnaire-based survey design for data collection. The questionnaire was filled out by 260 anonymous participants, both physically and online. RESULTS:

Objective voice and speech analysis of persons with chronic hoarseness by prosodic analysis of speech samples.

Automatic voice assessment is often performed using sustained vowels. In contrast, speech analysis of read-out texts can be applied to voice and speech assessment. Automatic speech recognition and prosodic analysis were used to find regression formulae between automatic and perceptual assessment of four voice and four speech criteria. The regression was trained with 21 men and 62 women (average age 49.2 years) and tested with another set of 24 men and 49 women (48.3 years), all suffering from chronic hoarseness. They read the text 'Der Nordwind und die Sonne' ('The North Wind and the Sun'). Fi

Development and Validation of the Spanish AzBio Sentence Corpus.

OBJECTIVE: To create and validate a Spanish sentence test for evaluation of speech understanding of Spanish-speaking listeners with hearing loss or cochlear implants (CI). STUDY DESIGN: Two thousand sentences were recorded from two male and two female speakers. The average intelligibility of each sentence was estimated as the mean score achieved by five listeners presented with a five-channel cochlear implant simulation. The mean scores of each sentence were used to construct 42 lists of 20 sentences with similar mean scores. List equivalency was then validated by presenting all lists to 10 C

It's Time to Define the Global Burden of Velopharyngeal Insufficiency.

Velopharyngeal insufficiency (VPI) predominantly affects children with cleft palate, undermining their ability to communicate. As a result, intelligible speech generation is one of the most important outcomes following cleft palate repair. In low- and middle-income countries (LMICs), the elevated incidence of cleft palate, unavailability of speech services, and suboptimal surgical outcomes has contributed to a substantial yet poorly defined global burden of VPI. Tracking speech outcomes in LMICs is essential to assessing VPI severity and identifying patients needing care. Artificial intelligen

An innovative technique to restore velopharyngeal incompetency for a patient with cleft lip and palate.

Treatment of cleft lip and palate patients often demand well-coordinated work of medical and dental specialists. In spite of surgical and orthodontic therapy, prosthetic rehabilitation is always necessary because of partial anadontia, maxillary hypoplasia and velopharyngeal dysfuction. The aim of the prosthetic treatment is to improve aesthetics, function and speech of the patients; however, factors like underdeveloped and collapsed maxillary arch, retrognathic maxilla and reduced alveolar ridge height make the treatment challenging. This clinical report describes an interdisciplinary approach

Severe speech impairment is a distinguishing feature of FOXP1-related disorder.

AIM: To delineate the speech and language phenotype of a cohort of individuals with FOXP1-related disorder. METHOD: We administered a standardized test battery to examine speech and oral motor function, receptive and expressive language, non-verbal cognition, and adaptive behaviour. Clinical history and cognitive assessments were analysed together with speech and language findings. RESULTS: Twenty-nine patients (17 females, 12 males; mean age 9y 6mo; median age 8y [range 2y 7mo-33y]; SD 6y 5mo) with pathogenic FOXP1 variants (14 truncating, three missense, three splice site, one in-frame del

Anterior Maxillary Segmental Distraction Osteogenesis for Treatment of Maxillary Hypoplasia in Patients With Repaired Cleft Palate.

OBJECTIVE: This study is to present experiences of using anterior maxillary segmental distraction osteogenesis (AMSDO) with internal distractors for treatment of maxillary hypoplasia in patients with repaired cleft palate. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A total of 42 patients of maxillary hypoplasia with repaired cleft palate were included in this study, and underwent AMSDO. Cephalometric analysis and speech quality assessments were performed to evaluate the changes after AMSDO and its long-term effect on stability. RESULTS: All cases had successfully accomplished AMSDO. Extraction of primary maxillary incisors and children's speech production: A case series.

Dental caries (tooth decay) is a disease with a significant global burden. Management may necessitate the extraction of teeth to restore oral health. The association between dental extractions and children's speech is unclear, with clinical implications for speech-language pathologists and dentists. This case series describes a prospective study reporting the impact of primary maxillary incisor teeth extraction on speech sound accuracy for three children (C1 aged 5;6 (years; months), C2 aged 4;6, C3 aged 3;10). Their speech was assessed using the Diagnostic Evaluation of Articulation and Phono

Five-year long-term functional and quality of life outcomes in total glossectomy survivors.

BACKGROUND: Total glossectomy is proven to be a superior treatment option for advanced tongue cancer. Despite its efficacy, the procedure is associated with profound morbidity, notably impacting Speech, swallowing, and overall quality of life. Limited therapeutic benefits and the potential for considerable morbidity render total glossectomy a subject of controversy. METHODS: We performed a multidimensional quality of life evaluation of long-term (more than 5 yrs.) total glossectomy survivors. In this study, we evaluated 25 total glossectomy survivors with comprehensive functional and quality

Sensorimotor Adaptation to a Nonuniform Formant Perturbation Is Preserved in Healthy Aging.

PURPOSE: Young adult speakers can be induced to increase the acoustic contrast between vowels through exposure to a nonuniform auditory "centralization" feedback perturbation that makes vowels sound less distinct from one another. While this result suggests that sensorimotor adaptation is a promising learning mechanism to drive behaviorally relevant changes related to speech intelligibility, existing res sensorimotor adaptation in speech has largely focused on younger adults. Given established age-related deficits in speech motor performance, it is possible that healthy aging itself negatively…

The development of multisensory speech perception continues into the late childhood years.

Observing a speaker's articulations substantially improves the intelligibility of spoken speech, especially under noisy listening conditions. This multisensory integration of speech inputs is crucial to effective communication. Appropriate development of this ability has major implications for children in classroom and social settings, and deficits in it have been linked to a number of neurodevelopmental disorders, especially autism. It is clear from structural imaging studies that there is a prolonged maturational course within regions of the perisylvian cortex that persists into late childho
